BS 2782-10:Method 1006:1978

0 Introduction
Method 1006 is a revision and combination of Methods 107J and 107H of BS 2782:1970 and provides a procedure for the determination of the amount of volatile matter and of resin in synthetic resin-impregnated glass fabric. In the preparation of this method consideration has also been given to the method described in BS 4584-11. This method is suitable for testing the product known as pre-impregnated glass fabric, i.e. synthetic resin-impregnated glass fabric that can be purchased as such and used for the manufacture of mouldings. It is not suitable for testing either glass fabrics that are impregnated with silicone resins or materials containing a filler that loses mass at 570 C.
NOTE Results obtained by this method on fabric which has not been desized will represent both resin content and size content.

4.1 Crucibles, silica or porcelain of appropriate size complying with the requirements of BS 4244. 4.2 Drying oven with circulating fan, complying with the requirements of BS 2648. 4.3 Drip tray of convenient size. 4.4 Muffle furnace

5 Test pieces
Use six test pieces 100 10 mm square, cut from the fabric as specified in the relevant British Standard for the fabric. If no British Standard exists and the fabric is in the form of of a roll, take two sets of three pieces from positions along a line normal to the warp of the fabric, with the diagonals of the test pieces parallel to the warp and weft threads. Each set shall comprise one piece from the centre of the roll and the other two from positions on opposite edges of the roll with their outer extremities 50 25 mm from each edge or selvedge. Remove all loose particles and projecting fibres from the test pieces.

WARNING NOTE. This method does not necessarily detail all the precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Attention should be paid to any appropriate safety precautions, and the method should only be operated by trained personnel.

6 Procedure
NOTE If it is not required to determine variations across the material under test, it is permissible to treat each set of three test pieces as a single test portion. If this is done, the calculations given in clause 7 and the test report (see clause 8) should be amended accordingly.

1 Scope
This method describes a procedure for determining the volatile matter and resin content of synthetic resin-impregnated textile glass fabric.

2 References
The following standards publications are referred to in this method. BS 2648, Performance requirements for electrically-heated laboratory drying ovens. BS 4244, Porcelain and silica crucibles. BS 4584, Metal-clad base materials for printed circuits Part 11: Bonding sheet material for use in the fabrication of multilayer printed boards .

3 Principle
Volatile matter. The volatile matter of the material is determined by heating three test pieces at a comparatively low temperature and calculating the mean loss in mass. Resin content. The resin content of the material is determined by heating a further three test pieces at 550 20 C, calculating the loss in mass as percentages, subtracting the volatile matter from these latter values and then calculating the mean of the three results.

4 Apparatus
The following apparatus is required.

6.1 Determination of volatile matter. Weigh separately, to the nearest 0.001 g, three of the test pieces and suspend them in the oven maintained at the appropriate temperature as follows: a) for polyester resin 120 5 C b) for epoxy resin 163 3 C If it is expected that resin will drip from the test pieces when heated, place a tared drip tray under each. After 15 0.25 min remove the test pieces (and drip trays, if used), allow them to cool in a desiccator and reweigh them to the nearest 0.001 g. 6.2 Determination of resin content. Heat three crucibles in the muffle furnace at 550 20 C for 15 min, allow them to cool in a desiccator and weigh them to the nearest 0.001 g. Cut each of the remaining test pieces into pieces of convenient size and place the pieces from each test piece into separate crucibles, taking care not to lose any fragments. Reweigh each crucible with its contents to the nearest 0.001 g. Heat the crucibles and contents in the muffle furnace at 550 20 C for 1 h. Remove the crucibles, allow to cool to room temperature in a desiccator and reweigh to the nearest 0.001 g. Repeat the heating, cooling, and weighing until the mass of each crucible is constant to within 0.002 g.

7 Calculation and expression of results 7.2 Percentage resin content. Calculate as a

7.1 Percentage of volatile matter. Calculate as a percentage the volatile matter (Vo) of each test piece by the formula:
m 1 m 2 V o = 100 ----------------------- if no drip tray is used m1 m 1 m 2 if no drip tray is used V o = 100 ----------------------- m 1 m 3 m 5 m 6 R o = 100 ----------------------- V m 5 m 4

percentage the resin content (Ro) of each test piece by the formula:

where m4 is the mass of the crucible (in g) m5 is the mass of the crucible plus test piece before combustion (in g) m6 is the mass of the crucible plus test piece after combustion (in g) Calculate the resin content as the arithmetric mean, R, of the three results.

where m1 is the mass of each test piece before heating (and drip tray if used) (in g) m2 is the mass of each test piece after heating (and drip tray if used) (in g) m3 is the mass of the drip tray (if used) (in g) Calculate the volatile matter content of the material (V) as the arithmetric mean of the three results.

8 Test report
The test report shall include the following particulars. a) A complete identification of the material being tested including type, source, manufacturers code numbers, previous history, etc. b) A reference to this British Standard method (i.e. BS 2782:Method 1006:1978). c) The arithmetric mean and the individual results for the three determinations of volatile content. d) The arithmetric mean and the individual results for the three determinations of resin content.
