Petit Fiore Earrings

by Lisa Kan
Combining seed beads, crystal marguerites, fine chain, and a cubic zirconia drop and earring finding, this earring design is simply stunning. Its base is made with right-angle weave; the flower with layered picots.

1: Frame. Make a double-walled frame by

working right-angle weave around a circle of beads: String 12A and tie a knot to form a circle, leaving a 4" tail. Pass through the first 3A. Unit 1: String 1B, 1A, 1D, 1A, and 1B; pass through the previous 3A again and the first 1B just strung (Figure 1).

Units 47: Repeat Units 2 and 3 twice. Unit 8: For the final corner, string 2B and pass through 1B of Unit 1 (Figure 3b) and the 1B of the previous unit. Weave through beads, following the right-angle thread path, to exit inside the frame.

Figure 1

Unit 2: String 3B; pass through the last 1B of the previous unit, the 3B just strung, and the next 3A of the inner wall (Figure 2).

2: Flower blooms. Round 1: Exiting from a center bead inside of the frame, string 3C and pass through the bead just exited and the following 1A. String 1C (Figure 4a) and pass through the next 2A. Repeat to add a picot to each of the inner sides and 1C to each corner. Step up by passing through the first bead of this round (Figure 4b).

Center: Exit from the tip of a corner picot of the previous round. Pass through the tip of each corner picot and pull tightly so the picots come to the center, creating a pyramid. String 1 marguerite and 1 charlotte and pass back through the marguerite (Figure 6). Pass through the picot bead opposite the one just exited, an adjacent picot bead, the marguerite, and the charlotte. Pass back through the marguerite and through the bead opposite the one just exited. This stitched crisscross will ensure the crystal sits firmly in the flowers center.

Unit 3: String 1B, 1A, 1D, and 1A (Figure 3a); pass through the last 1B of the previous unit, the 3A of the inner wall, and the 1B just strung.

Round 2: String 1C and pass through the tip of the picot. String 5C and pass through the tip bead again. String 1C and pass through the third picot bead and the corner bead. String 3C; pass through the corner again and the first bead of the next picot. Repeat entire sequence around the square to make large petals and corner picots (Figure 5).

Figure 6

Round 3: String 5C and pass through the picot bead just exited and the adjacent picot bead; repeat all around for a total of 4 petals (Figure 7).

Round 4: Weave through the beads to exit from a corner bead in Round 1. String 5C and pass through the corner bead again (Figure 8a). Following the same path as in Round 2, weave through the beads to the center of the next petal. String 3C; pass through the same bead again and through beads to exit the next corner (Figure 8b). Repeat around. Secure the thread and trim.

3: Finishing. Use 1" of wire to form a wrapped-loop bail that attaches to the drop (Figure 9).

Figure 9

Cut three pieces of chain: 2", 2", and 1". Use a jump ring to string one end of the 2", then 2", then 1" chains; string the bail loop, then string the other end of the 1", 2", then 2" chains to form a swag beneath the drop. Attach the jump ring to one of the D beads along the side of a frame. Attach the earring finding to the opposite D using a second jump ring.

4: Repeat Steps 13 for a second earring.
