Resident of the Month - Hettie C.

Hettie Carlson was born on August 4, 1939. Though she was born in St. Cloud, she grew up mostly in Sartell. Hettie shared her childhood with one brother and two sisters. Currently, her brother is still in Sartell, one sister is in Royalton, and the other sister is here in St. Cloud. Hettie was married once, and had one son. Steve, her son, is now 53 years old and lives in Eagan. She was very happy to see Steve and her siblings over the holidays this year! Hettie spent most of her career as a housekeeper at ing the news or soap operas, enjoying the weather outside, writing letters to her son, or watching the Twins. She loves going out and about, and her favorite restaurant to go to is the Green Mill. She is a firm believer in the power of breakfast! Congratulations, Hettie, for being our Resident of the Month for January!

various places. In the late 90s she even worked with a fellow Carefree resident! Most recently, she worked up at Mille Lacs Casino over the summers. Hettie still thoroughly enjoys cleaning and doing laundry, but will be found most often reading, watch-

May 2012 Carefree Living started a Resident of the Month program. This program is in place to recognize our residents who put smiles on the faces of others and who help make Carefree Living a little brighter each day.

Tax Assistance
The new year is upon us. Just a reminder--any important financial information you receive over the next couple months, including your CRP, should be kept in a safe spot. We will be doing a tax clinic in February at which we can review your tax information, complete your return if available, and prep you for a tax consultant if that need be done. Look for more information in next month's newsletter, see Brandi with any questions you may have.

History Corner with Ron

We have just passed through the final four months of the old year. They were named, in sequence, September, October, November and December. If you go back to the original Latin words from which they came, you will find that they mean, respectively, Seventh month, Eighth month, Ninth month, and Tenth month. But hey, how can the last month of our twelve-month year be called the tenth month? Well, the fact is that during most of human history the year did not end on Dec. 31. January was the eleventh month and February was the twelfth. Thats why February has the honor of being variable. The need for a leap year was recognized way back in ancient times, and it was logical to put it at the end of the year. What came next was confusing. Instead of the new year beginning on March 1, you had to wait until the 25th to begin the celebration. It seems that long-established traditions can defy neat logical arrangements. This tradition went so far back that no one knows when it began. All that is clear is that it involved a slight miscalculation of the spring equinox (and who can blame the ancient ancients for that?) Above all, who can blame them for beginning their new year on the first day of spring? Isnt that more sensible than beginning it on a ho-hum day like January 1st, which never meant anything to anybody? March was compensated for that 24-day wait by being acknowledged as the first month of the year. March 25th continued to be New Years Day until 1752which was not terribly long ago. Advanced Care Directives

An advanced care directive is an official document, a tool that allows you to communicate your preferences for future healthcare decision making.
Residents, Family and Friends: If you were injured or came down with a sudden illness that left you unable to make medical decisions for yourself, would your friends or family know what your wishes would be? Have you had this discussion with them? Have you created an advanced care directive? Do you know what an advanced care directive is? An advanced care directive is an official document, a tool that allows you to communicate your preferences for future healthcare decision making. It also can allow you to name a representative to make these choices for you should you be unable to do so yourself. Advanced care directives are good for adults of all ages to have in place. They are a fluid document that can be changed over time as your preferences for treatment or decision makers change. If you would like to hear more on advanced care directives and how they work, we will be offering sessions over the next couple of months and welcome residents, family and friends to join us. Come, ask questions and become part of the discussion. We will provide a copy of a form that can be completed and we can help start this process with you. Our first sessions will be held in January on the following dates and times: January 9th at 10:30 AM in the activity room January 21st at 6:00 PM in the dining room January 29th at 1:30 PM in the 3rd floor chapel

Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns

Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne. Chorus For auld lang syne, my jo, For auld lang syne, We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne, And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp! And surely I'll be mine! And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne. Chorus We twa hae run about the braes And pu'd the gowans fine; But we've wander'd mony a weary foot Sin auld lang syne. Chorus We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn, Frae mornin' sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar'd Sin auld lang syne. Chorus And there's a hand, my trusty fiere! And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak a right guid willy waught, For auld lang syne. Chorus Translation: Long, Long Ago Should old acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, And long, long ago. Chorus And for long, long ago, my dear For long, long ago, We'll take a cup of kindness yet, For long, long ago And surely youll buy your pint-jug! And surely I'll buy mine! And we'll take a cup of kindness yet, For long, long ago. Chorus We two have run about the hills And pulled the daisies fine; But we've wandered manys the weary foot Since long, long ago. Chorus We two have paddled in the stream, From morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared Since long, long ago. Chorus And there's a hand, my trusty friend! And give us a hand of yours! And we'll take a deep draught of good-will For long, long ago. Chorus
