Safety Requirements

1. Do not fill the fuel tank while the engine is running. Gasoline spilled on a hot engine may explode and cause serious injury to personnel. 2. Fumes from the hypochlorination unit can cause sickness or even death. These fumes are increased when hypochlorite solution is subject to extreme heat. Be sure that the unit is in a well-ventilated area. 3. If an unpleasant taste or odor is present, rinse the hoses with a solution of 100 parts per million calcium hypochlorite and water prior to initial use. 4. Dry-cleaning solvent, P-D-680, used to clean parts is potentially dangerous to personnel and property. Avoid inhalation of fumes and repeated or prolonged skin exposure. Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Use in well-ventilated area away from open flame or excessive heat. Flash point is 100 degrees F (38 degrees C). 5. Never operate the centrifugal pump in an enclosed area unless the exhaust gases are piped to the outside. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide which is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. 6. Make sure spark plug leads are disconnected before performing maintenance on the pump. 7. Avoid breathing smoke when using a fire extinguisher.

8. When operating 125-GPM pump or 350-GPM pump ensure fuel is stored a minimum of 50 feet from the pump. 9. Hearing protection must be worn by personnel standing within 50 feet of the operating pump. 10. Handle/dispose of hazardous materials (such as used oil, contaminated fuel, and chemical test kits) IAW unit Standard Operating Procedures/Operations Orders (OPORD), local regulations, and/or host nation laws. 11. Comply with unit Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Operations Orders (OPORD), local regulations and/or host nation laws for drip pans or secondary containment devices.

Risk Assessment Level Environmental Considerations

Low - to medium

Army Regulation 200-1 delineates TRADOC responsibilities to integrate environmental requirements across DTLOMS and ensure all training procedures, materials, and doctrine include sound environmental practices and considerations. The Army's environmental vision is to be a national leader in environmental and natural resource stewardship for present and future generations as an integral part of all Army missions. This Training Support Package meets this standard. Refer students to the Student Evaluation Plan. The ability to operate the PWS/DS, combined with the ability to operate the TWDS hose line, is essential for the water treatment specialist in producing, storing, distributing, and transporting potable water.

Do not stand in front of the feeder when clearing air from the feeder. 9) If feeder becomes air-bound, loosen feeder hose at upper connection point and temporarily turn in stroke adjustment clockwise to fully closed position (100%). Allow air to escape from small vent hole in top of pump and reset stroke adjustment to 50%. 10) Initial stroke setting of pump should be approximately 50%. Allow unit to operate a few minutes, and then take a water chlorine residual test. If chlorine level is too high or low, perform the following steps: a) If chlorine level is too high, turn stroke adjustment down to 30% and allow unit to operate several minutes. Repeat chlorine level test, dilute solution with untreated water, and repeat chlorine level test. b) If chlorine level is too low, increase stroke adjustment to 70%, and repeat chlorine level test. Continue to adjust stroke setting and testing until proper level is achieved.

17

NOTE: Unit instruction plate is based on the use of calcium hypochlorite (70% available chlorine). If not available, 65% or 85% may be used in the same quantity as specified on the instruction plate, but pump stroke setting will change. 11) If 65% available chlorine is used, set pump stroke to 54%, and if 85% available chlorine is used, set pump stroke to 42%. b. Distribute potable water. 1) Discharge water from 2-inch hoses by opening valves V11, V12, V13, or V14. 2) Discharge water from 1-1/2-inch hoses by opening valves V15, V16, V17, or V18. 3) Discharge water from nozzle assys by opening valves V19, V20, V21, or V22. 4) Discharge water from bag filler connections by opening valves V23, V24, or V25. 5) Operate a distribution nozzle to obtain a water sample. 6) Monitor the controls and instruments on the 350-GPM pump. 7) Inspect the 350-GPM pump periodically for leaks. 8) Inspect the 125-GPM pump periodically for leaks, and listen for unusual noises and vibrations. 9) Inspect tanks 1 and 2 periodically for leaks, and inspect the filler and discharge assemblies, the vent pipe assemblies, and the drain fitting assemblies periodically for leaks and damage. 10) Inspect the hoses, valve assemblies, and distribution nozzles periodically for leaks and damage. 11) Log all water issued/distributed on DA Form 1714-R or DA Form 1714-1-R. c. Perform during-operations PMCS. 1) Perform chlorine residual tests at 30-minute intervals to ensure that the proper residual is being maintained. Log chlorine residual test results on DA Form 1714-R or DA Form 1714-1-R. 2) Prepare hypochlorite solution when the level in the reservoir drops within 2 or 3 inches of the bottom. 3) Log all actions/deficiencies on DA Form 2404. 4) Give form to supervisor at the end of each shift.
