Stepanie Quirk Iyengar Yoga TherapyAuckland Part 3 Continued Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012

Chair Report
I have just arrived home from the first of the 6 Therapy workshops with Stephanie Quirk and I feel all arms and legs. The knowledge that Stephanie has deep within every part of her body and mind after 18years of work with the Iyengar family in the therapy classes in Pune is astounding. As one student said in our lunch break- this 4 days work is about equal to one semester at a tertiary institute. Thank you Stephanie and I know I am looking forward to November to continue this amazing journey within the microcosm of ourselves. And of course in the meantime practice, practice, practice! Thank you to the Events Committee for all their work, to Marcia for the superb venue and to all those who made and brought the specialist props. CONGRATULATIONS to Monica Haar who has been granted her Senior Level 3 Certificate from our dear Guruji. A few changes have been made to a number of committees. Welcome to 2 new executive committee members Anna Timms and Jude Folkard. Eira will now be editing the Link (as well as being on the Exec Comm) and is looking for someone in AKD to help. Thanks to Neil Mackay for his hard work (hence the need for 2 people on the editing team) on editing the Link, including this current issue. Thanks to Suzi for all her efforts on various committees including Assessment and Teacher Training and Ethics Committees; she is also standing down from these duties. The AGM is set for Saturday 16th June 2pm at North Shore Yoga (see further information in this issue). It is coinciding with the weekend of the All-Assessors meeting in Auckland to hopefully gain a better attendance. This is an important meeting to discuss many issues relating to a functional organization that benefits all of us, please make the effort to attend. Without the New Zealand Association becoming a certified teacher would be a lot harder and more expensive. The Association will have to look at how to increase the attendance at an AGM, one suggestion is coinciding with the IYANZ visiting workshop teacher. Your views on such issues and many others are valued. Corry Regnier

Interview with Monica Haar via email from Sweden

Corry Regnier (CR): What drew you to Yoga? Moni: I was interested in eastern philosophy ever since I was a child. My Russian Grandmother, who I adored, studied it and also did Hatha Yoga with her Guru Goswami for over 30 years until he died in the 70s. I had many happy years with my Gran where we would talk about things I could never talk to someone else about like the meaning of life and death and so forth. So I knew very early that my path would go via yoga in one form or the other. As a young adult I was a serious student of Tibetan Buddhism and eventually in the early 80s came upon Iyengar Yoga through a friend of mine. In those days I had a bad back, injured from working as a nurse with very sick people in their homes and later my back got worse from building my own house high up in the bush of Coromandel. My friend who had met and studied with Guru-Ji in the 70s showed me 3 Asanas and I had instant relief, bought Light on Yoga and I have never looked back since then. CR: When did you start Iyengar Yoga (IY)? Moni: Early 80s CR: What was your career prior to becoming a Yoga Teacher? Both in Sweden and NZ In Sweden I qualified as a nurse in the 70s and after a couple of years work gave it up. I then took up drama and became a street artist and thats how I ended up in NZ in 1978. I came to NZ with 5 other Swedish friends who together with a few Kiwis and formed the group the Imperial trunk Fools. With a grant from the Art council we travelled around NZ with our performances- at festivals like Nambassa and Sweetwaters and shows in every Community Hall north of Auckland. Then came marriage, children and life on a marae with my then husband. I worked as a co-chef in the Colville Restaurant while I lived in the Coromandel at the Te Kauae o Maui community for about 10 years. It was in the Colville Community Hall I started teaching Yoga. CR: If you werent a full-time Yoga Teacher what would you be doing? What is your (other!) dream job? Moni: I always say I would work with animals in one way or another if I were not a yoga teacher. I just love animals. CR: Who were your first IY teachers and whom did you train as an IY teacher with? Moni: I started my Teacher Training with Michael Byron McKay in 1990. A highlight of my teacher training was attending Gurujis teachers classes in Auckland in 1992. CR: When was your first visit to the Iyengars and how does that first experience compare with subsequent visits especially with the ones in the last few years?

16

Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012

Moni: My first visit was 1993. I then shared a flat with Stephanie Quirk who had just arrived for her first visit as well (and she is still living in Pune). Pune was different then. There were small villages with cows, water buffalos walking on the streets. People traveled on bicycles everywhere and you could actually cross the road and walk to the institute easily without being run over. I dont really know how to describe my first visit to the institute but I know I was overwhelmed by the grandness of it all. I was sort of awestruck. Guru-Ji was in the class a lot and he adjusted me many times. I do not think I realized how lucky I was but it did change my view on teaching and the whole subject of Yoga. It all sort of came alive and I realized it was something that was going to stick with me forever. I have been to Pune over 15 times now and the last 4-5 years have been quite different than the early days. While the early days were playful and filled with social gatherings, laughter and a bit crazy, the later years were more shaped by study, practice and soaking up of every bit possible from the wisdom of my Guru. I find that I enjoy the practice times at RIMYI so much more now as I have friends from all over the world with whom I connect only when we meet there. Together with Guru-Ji they inspire me to keep digging deeper. Spending time at the Institute is such a wonderful opportunity to give Yoga all the attention it deserves as it gives so much back. CR: I understand you were on the first IYANZ committee. Who else was on that first Committee with you? Moni: From what I remember Duncan Henry was the chairperson, I was the treasurer/ secretary and Wendy Brown, Mike Byron-McKay and Mande White were the other Executive members. I think maybe Sharon Lightfoot was a member for a while too. After just two meetings Mike left the Exec.Com. I continued to be on the Exec. Com. until the end of the 90's and after that I have solely been working with Assessments and on the Assessment and Teacher Training Committee (A & TT). CR: Of those founding committee members who is left in the Association and active in the Iyengar Yoga community? Moni: I think I am the only one left now. CR: When did you start your School- the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Auckland? Who were the first teachers involved in helping you run it? Moni: initially I had the Iyengar yoga centre in Avondale for a few years. When we moved the school to St Benedict Street in the city (1997-8) it was renamed the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Auckland. In the beginning it was just Greg Goodyear and I who taught all the classes. Later, Gaynor, Sue Lever, David Bullivant and Fran Campbell joined. Polly Baigust (Melodies niece) taught there for a while as well. CR: Now (since when?) you have branched out further all the way over the other side of the world. How did that come about and what are you doing in Sweden?

Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012

17

Moni: Nina, another Swedish girl in the teacher training group with Michael Byron McKay, returned to northern Sweden, in the Arctic, to teach. In the late 90s she invited me to teach a workshop at her centre and it has snow-balled from there. I am the only senior teacher so far in Scandinavia who can teach in the native tongue and that has been very valuable for the students over there. Nina eventually opened up a big centre in the town of Pite and needed more teachers to support her and I was invited to run a 2 years teacher training course in Sweden 2008-10.During that time I also co-founded the Swedish Iyengar Yoga Association with the blessings from Guru-ji. I also taught workshops in Denmark and Norway as well. The Teacher Training I did in 2008-10 went very well and the 11 candidates passed their Assessment for Intro 2 last year. Now, in 2012, I am starting my first (and last Teacher Training (T.T.) Course in Sweden) in Stockholm. It is the very first ever Iyengar Yoga Teacher Training in this city. I have 15 candidates eager to become teachers. I will run the course at the Iyengar Yoga Centre in Stockholm, which I helped to start up in 2010. So basically I spend my time overseas doing the same as I would do in NZ. After this 2 year T.T. course I feel my mission is over in Sweden as their own pool of teachers (who are upgrading their Certificates) are increasing rapidly. I am already now looking forwards to spending more time in NZ. Europe feels too big and busy for me and I feel like NZ is my spiritual home. I want to put more energy into my Centre in Auckland than I am currently able to, like work with therapy and help teachers who want to upgrade their Certificates to higher levels. CR: How does the caliber of NZ Iyengar Yoga teachers and students compare with those in Europe? Moni: There are some differences. In the beginning the European students seem very worried and ask a lot of questions. They have a lot of injuries as well. The Scandinavians are very active outdoors people and spend a lot of time in general biking everywhere, skiing, skating and going to the gym so there are a lot of knee problems and lower back aches as a result of that. They suffer from the long winter months of no light so they have peculiar symptoms like thyroid problems and depressions. They also spend far too much time in front of computers/keyboards and have a lot of neck problems and RSI. On a more positive note I would say they are mostly very highly educated and so they ask intelligent questions and they love the study part of the training courses and write amazing essays on the subject. NZ students I find are physically more advanced. They get on with it and do not ask too many questions in general. They seem to accept the journey, more open minded in a way, but also in a Kiwi sort of a way sometimes with too much complacency. Kiwi teachers and students do not have the enormous amount of Senior teachers close by, as in Europe, to help with their further education. This means that the upgrading of Certificates is much slower in NZ than in Europe and it seems to be not as much of a focus. I personally think that makes better teachers in the long run. Teachers in NZ really grow into their shoes before advancing and they spend a lot of time on their mat with their own practice.
18 Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012

In Europe this is not always the case as there are workshops running constantly where you can (and can afford as wages are much higher) to help further yourself. In the UK for example they now have over 1000 Certified teachers and many of them of higher levels, so the Senior Teachers, Assessors and Teacher Trainers are competing for their jobs. To give an example, we needed an extra Assessor for an Assessment in Sweden recently and asked the UK for help, within 24 hours we had 15 replies from Senior Intermediate level 3 teachers who all wanted to assist on this Intro 1 Assessment! CR: Any ideas/experiences you would like to share on organizing of the Association that you have come across in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe? Moni: My experience with Associations in Europe is really limited to the Swedish one even though I follow what the Dutch are doing and have some insight in to the UK Association as well. What I think I have learnt from the experience of co founding the Swedish Association is that it is much easier to run the Association if you follow the Pune Constitution closely right from the start and take the personality out of the equation. What I mean to say with that is that it is so much easier to run an Association if you follow the rules first of all and then make exemptions if needed rather than the other way around. It is a political situation where you do your job and try to be professional and true to Guru-Jis wishes in this case. It is obvious to me that the Association should not be used as a career or power tool. It has to operate without emotion somewhat. The Swedish are very good at running Associations and committees in general and that has taught me a lot about the protocol which all organizations are run by, whether Yoga or Sports or Charity. To know how to work Agendas, Minutes, communication really helps in all situations, practical or otherwise. It is very helpful to have job descriptions and a set meeting culture when you deal with the issues you have in front of you. CR: How do you see NZ keeping a vibrant Iyengar Yoga community? Keeping the teachers motivated and inspired in the spirit of Guruji, Geetaji and Prashantji, especially with less and less teaching from the former two? Moni: Guru-Ji always says Try not to be like me, but find what I have found. Students of yoga should be encouraged to go to Pune whether the Iyengars are there or not, as the time there is valuable in itself. Spending time at the Institute where Yoga is the sole focus with very little distraction is a great opportunity to further oneself in practice. Students should also be encouraged to study with their senior teachers as we carry the lineage of Guru-jis teachings and it is our job to transmit them. It is only us who had the blessing of more time spent with these amazing teachers who will miss it New students and teachers have us and will find their own way and inspiration in time to come. CR: So far what have been the highlights of your Iyengar Yoga career as a teacher and as a student? Moni: For me it is always the highlight when I each year see Guru-Ji for the first time and he returns my smile. Every year it feels just as great. To sit next to him in practice, to listen to him teach is a continuum of highlights. In my actual career I guess standing in front of 150 or so students in San Francisco a few years back was quite an experience. But also to have all my Swedish trainees certified last year was amazing. And finally to receive my Senior 3 CerYoga Link March (Autumn) 2012 19 tificate made me feel a strong sense of achievement and humbleness at the same time. I feel very blessed.

Minutes of Phone meeting: 1.30pm Friday 09 December 2011.

Present: Corry (Chair) Roger (Secretary), Susan (treasurer) Eira. Apologies: Paul. Minutes of 18 October meeting confirmed. (Roger to send copies to Corry and Susan) Roger Brown proposed a motion: That Paul Bartons membership of the Executive Committee of the IyengarYoga Association of New Zealand be suspended until the next AGM. This action is the result of communication difficulties. Motion seconded by Eira. Motion carried. Finance overview Treasurers actions since last meeting New Kiwibank term deposit established as instructed: $20K for 12 months @ 4.5%, using same signatories as existing National Bank accounts Consulted with IRD: Susan now authorised with IRD as association officer; awaiting copy of RWT exemption certificate from IRD Expenses for JI1 and JI 2/3 assessments paid out to NZ assessors $7300 received to date in deposits for Stephanie Quirk workshop Slow trickle of annual subs still coming in Current position & upcoming income/expenditure NBNZ cheque account ~$30K NBNZ term deposit (matures August 2012) ~$26.5K Kiwibank term deposit (matures Dec 2012) $20K Invoices for 2011 Yoga Link advertising will be mailed next week (see discussion below) Further income expected from SQ workshop into early 2012 Expenses for JI assessments will be paid to Australian assessors (some from 2010) Expenses will be paid for two most recent issues of Yoga Link (see discussion below) Susie Lever has advised us that more copies of Teacher Training Guidelines need printing (see discussion below) unsure of likely costing. Discussion Since only three Yoga Links over usual invoicing period (no Summer 2011 issue), adjustment needed to advertising rates for this year only. Committee agreed that Susan would prorate pricing accordingly where an advertiser booked multiple ads. Since outgoing Link editor unable to locate July invoices to claim expenses, committee agreed to offer $1000 reimbursement for that issue, based on range of amounts claimed for 22 Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012 other issues over past year.

Eira may know who organised previous printing of TT Guidelines & agreed to follow up. Susan has asked Susie L to liaise with A&TT committee about any necessary updating. Susan suggested changing payment system for Link advertising, so that advertisers pay up-front when booking, as happens with all other association services to members. Committee agreed to implementing this change once new Link editor in place. Susan will send out advance notice of change with this years invoices, and follow up with editor next year. Susan intends to update membership renewal form before next April 2012, to make processing renewals more efficient. Will help with accounts, and keeping database and Link teacher list up to date. Susan to submit modified form to committee well ahead of renewal time. Susan left meeting after financial report and discussion

Response from Link advertisement for committee members: one response. Next AGM request that this should be in May, and must be advertised in Summer Link. Eira to investigate venue in Auckland. Date and venue to be confirmed. Exec. Committee to meet prior to AGM. ACC: Roger has made preliminary enquiries as to procedure for Iyengar Yoga to be accredited by ACC. It is necessary to make a formal application, so a letter is to be drafted by the Exec Committee for submitting to ACC. Roger to make further enquiries so that we have some idea of how best to present ourselves. Communications Standing Committee: Decision to set up such a committee unanimously agreed. This committee would have responsibility for the Link and any other publications. Link needs both an Editor and someone responsible for printing and distribution. A third person would be desirable as an overseer. Judith Folkard has put herself forward to produce the Link, another volunteer needed. David Bullivant to continue his good work with web-site and data base, and to liaise with this committee. Events: John Leebold has agreed to be Associations 2012 visiting teacher. Dates to be advised. Events committee to finalise dates. Yoga Open Days: Events Committee agree to hold these in 2012. Events Committee has met with Linda Purvis. Linda and partner Gerry Chambers are scheduled to be Associations visiting teachers in 2013 (both teaching together). Events have received 40 registrations for Stephanie Quirks Therapy course. Manuso has agreed to be visiting teacher 2015. Suggestion made to Events committee to inquire as to Abigatas availability in near future.
Yoga Link March (Autumn) 2012 23

Teacher training: Discussion about setting up a review process for problem situations. It seems that if a teacher trainee (or trainer) disregards our constitution, there is no review or disciplinary process. Setting up a review system should be initiated, and possibly become the responsibility of A&TT Committee, Ethics Committee and senior certified teachers. Next meeting early 2012. Date and time tba. There being no other business the Meeting closed 3pm

Fees can, however, be transferred to the following year with no admin charge. If a doctors certificate is presented upon withdrawal due to unforseen illness/injury, no admin charge is applied. After discussion it was agreed there should be no change to present A&TT policy. Corry to have further discussion with A&TT committee to clarify teacher training disputes process. Discussion about Gurujis requirement for minimum Pune attendance by assessors and teacher trainers. Corry to write to A&TT Committee to this effect. Do we need further approval from Guruji to continue to waive this directive? This matter also to be discussed at AGM. Exec committee does not wish to make a decision on this without imput from teacher trainers. It is apparent to exec committee that many exemptions would be required for people currently in teacher training and assessor roles . Corry to write to A&TT committee to enquire as to who should attend Australian All Assessors Meeting. Should we have representation this year in view of clash of timing with Stephanie Quirks workshops? Discussion about reducing Link to 3 editions. Decided to leave as is until new editorial team established. Discussion about Link being distributed on-line. Agreed to discuss this at AGM with a covering article in next Link a possible small reduction in subs was suggested if on line option taken in view of reducing paper trail. Discussion about getting more people to contribute to link. Personal experiences of assessments, Pune visits, visiting workshops or any other valid yoga experiences. Agenda for AGM to be compiled. Register of certified teachers. Is this a good idea? Will this help us get ACC accreditation? Discussion on-going. Put to AGM. Roger to send e mail to ACC. Meeting closed at 4.02pm.
