What are your plans to participate in a coordinated campaign in the general election? ! ! to the extent that democratic judicial candidates will 3. When elected, how will you recruit, retain, and create a friendly environment for LGBT and LGBT-friendly sta"? I will seek the best people regardless of their race, sex, religion, national origin, physical disability, age, and sexual orientation. I will encourage and promote an environment of openness and nondiscrimination. ! ! 5. Would you be willing to appoint a liaison to meet with the LGBT community on a ongoing basis? If not, why? yes 6. Understanding that administrative matters can take up a signicant percentage of your work day, what are some ideas for policies or procedures that you think you can improve court operations for the court which you are seeking o#ce? What are the most important policies or procedures you've identied as needing improvement? ! ! Plea bargains are a large part of a courts docket. Both the prosecutors and defense attorneys can be part of a slower than optimal resolution for those cases. I would institute an email prompt system as Judge Magnis does in the 283rd, generated by my coordinator. Also, I would set up a town-hall/court meeting monthly meeting where issues can be raised and discussed. Even in the adversarial system of criminal justice, some of the unnecessary kinks can and should be resolved with transparency and commitment. ! ! I am very concerned about the high percentage of mentally ill in the jail population. I would institute more rigorous screening so that those individuals could be identied sooner and provided treatment. I will maintain Judge Stoltzs Dual Diagnosis Court and set up ways of maintaining contact with non-DDC mentally ill probationers. ! I, William R.
