UUA News Statement: New Mexico Affirms Marriage Equality

December 23, 2013 The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), issued the following statement applauding the legalization of same-sex marriage in New Mexico: Last week, the New Mexico Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of granting samesex couples the same rights of marriage as heterosexual couples. I am thrilled to celebrate New Mexicos decision to affirm the freedom to marry. I applaud all who stood up against inequality and intolerance, including the eight New Mexico counties that began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples before the ruling. This courageous act demonstrates again that more Americans realize that marriage equality strengthens families, protects children, and ensures the basic rights of citizenship for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender couples. I am grateful to the Unitarian Universalists in New Mexico who stood on the side of love in support of marriage equality. We celebrate this victory and, at the same time, acknowledge the important work there still is to do in other states. More recently, a federal judge struck down Utahs ban on same-sex marriage saying it was unconstitutional. Even though the state has already filed a notice of appeal, I strongly believe it will only be a matter of time before same-sex marriage is fully realized across this country. It has been an amazing year for marriage equality.
