Montie Design
Montie Design is a collaborative product design and development firm
with core competencies in industrial design, mechanical design and
fuzzy front end services. Implementing a client-centric approach in

The RTP Product Development Guild is about the Regional Economy,
Product Innovation and People. Two years ago, design professional
Montie Roland and Tom Vass, regional economist, envisioned a grassroots
organization committed to helping entrepreneurs and inventors move
their idea from the kitchen table to market. Understanding that
product innovation is the cornerstone to sustaining a vibrant economy,
the Guild was created, providing conceptualization, design, production
and commercialization expertise to individuals, small companies, and
startups.
In February, 2009, the Guild launched its charter project. Securing
accomplished volunteer professionals from the engineering, design,
product, marketing and sales fields, this group of advisors meet routinely
to support our client’s product development and commercialization
process. This October, our client, with assistance from Guild members,
presents his business case and prototype to venture capitalists. The
Guild is planning to support 10 projects in 2010 and is seeking advisors
and members to support upcoming client submissions.
A key mission of the Guild’s is community and business engagement.
The Guild offers numerous opportunities to network and build trust
relationships among design, product, engineering, government, and
business professionals. Through events such as monthly ‘lunch and
learns’, the annual Product Design Street Faire, and networking ‘meet-
ups’, individuals gain access to information and resources to help them
grow their business.
The NC Design and Prototyping Co-Op is another extensive resource
within the Guild, providing individuals and businesses with pre-qualified
providers and vendors to support their business and project needs.
As the Guild grows, our focus on community and nurturing the curiosity
of the younger generation grows. It is our desire to not only enhance
the regional economy and build professional networks, but to leave a
footprint that encourages technological product innovation among
future generations.

Ty Hagler
Ty Hagler, the inspirational force
behind Studio Hagler, is a graduate
of the Georgia Institute of Technol-
ogy’s program in Industrial Design.
His experience with product design
covers a broad range of categories,
with special emphasis in the home
improvement industry.
The foundation of Studio Hagler is a
client-centered approach based on a
rapid response philosophy. During
his career, Ty has created and man-
aged design specifications of more
than 40 product concepts, with mar-
ket forecasts of $5 million to $100
million in annual sales.
Prior to founding Studio Hagler in
2008, Ty played the role of design
evangelist within The Home Depot,
enthusiastically making the case to
senior executives for design and in-
novation in the retail environment.
After starting in The Home Depot
advertising department, Hagler then
joined the OrangeWorks depart-
ment, an award-winning innovation
laboratory for new product develop-
ment at The Home Depot. Always a
champion advancing design and in-
novation, Ty led internal design ef-
forts for OrangeWorks and partnered
with The Home Depot business ana-
lysts to align innovation with strate-
gic merchandising goals.

Al Ely
Al is President of ADR Hydro Cut,
Inc., a water-jet cutting shop lo-
cated on International Drive in
Morrisville. He has over 34 years
experience as a business owner in
a wide variety of markets and in-
dustries. His drive and motivation
comes from the desire to help cus-
tomers solve a problem and com-
plete a project that is particularly
challenging. His personal interests
are also wide spanning, from 56-
year-old cars to spending as much
time on the water as possible, es-
pecially in the Bahamas. He is also
a Founding Member of the RTP
Product Development Guild with
the function of membership chair.
Al served in the U.S. Navy aboard
River Patrol Boats, (“PBRs”) on the
rivers of South Vietnam, and then
aboard a guided missile destroyer
sailing from California. He grew
up in New Jersey but has lived in
Vermont, Colorado, California, New
Mexico, New Hampshire, Maine
[aboard his sailboat] and last but
not least, North Carolina.

ADR HYDROCUT
ADR Hydro Cut, Inc. is located on International Drive in Morrisville,
NC a convenient location to just about anywhere in the Triangle.
ADR was founded in 1998 by Al Ely and Ron Harris. ADR is a wa-
ter-jet cutting shop where they cut parts and solve problems.
In the beginning, Al and Ron made a decision to only cut parts
and offer no other services. “We wanted to do work for as many
fabrication shops in the region and knew we did not want to be-
come their competition, so we market ourselves as being an off
site cutting resource for all of our customers.” ADR stocks a wide
variety of materials and can track down just about any type of
material that customers need to have cut.
Cutting parts with water means there is no heat introduced into
the cutting process and very thick (6”) material is not a problem.
So far there are only three things that are resistant to cutting and
they are the tiles from the bottom of the space shuttle, safety
glass, and some laminates. ADR has cut parts for customers from
all over the globe. Al Ely says “I do not know how some of our cus-
tomers find us, but find us they do, and usually from references.”
Al and Ron have an artistic background, so they have a tendency
to think outside of the box in relation to accomplishing difficult
tasks.
