This template is to assist in the design of a new Data Center and features the concepts presented in Build the Best Data Center Facility for Your Business, by Douglas Alger. The template is written for a company pro ect manager who needs to present Data Center design guidelines to a contracted architectural firm. !t is assumed that the architectural firm will, in turn, create construction documents to be re"iewed by the appropriate municipal planning department and ultimately followed by the pro ect#s contractors$electricians, mechanical contractors, cabling "endors, and so on. %otes to the designer introduce each section of the document. %otes are also placed at &ey paragraphs to clarify re'uirements or e(plain what information must be entered. )ariables in this document$data points you must enter$are highlighted in teal. Cable counts and other 'uantities ha"e been suggested where appropriate. !n other instances, "ariables are represented by a description *for e(ample., Your Company+ or symbol *for e(ample, ,+. -emo"e all italici.ed notes and color/coding after you fill out the template.

The si.e and amount of your wire management is dri"en by how many patch cords must be accommodated, particularly copper cabling. *Fiber patch cords are thinner than copper and therefore ha"e less effect on wire management.+ !f your Data Center will ha"e only 35 ports of copper cabling to each cabinet location, 7/ and =/inch *3?/ and 56/ centimeter+ "ertical wire managers are probably fine. !f your Data Center has 8= ports to each cabinet location, consider =/ and 35/inch *56/ and 46/centimeter+ "ertical wire management. The drawings that follow are sample details useful for illustrating a Data Center design.

Figure 3$Cabinet Location Plan$This depicts a Data Center#s o"erall layout. The drawing is useful for showing spacing and orientation of ser"er rows and ma or infrastructure. Figure 5$Floor Tile Location Plan$The raised floor grid, including floor tile cutout dimensions and the placement of perforated tiles. Figure 4$Electrical Location Plan$The types and locations of all electrical infrastructure within the Data Center. Fi"e e(amples of electrical receptacles are listed in the symbol &ey. Figure 8$Data Routing Diagram$1aths for structured cabling. This illustration not only con"eys the distributed cabling hierarchy concept, but can also guide "endors so that cabling doesn#t criss/cross and ris& tangling. Figure ?$Under-Floor Power and Cable Detail$This detail shows the placement of infrastructure under each ser"er row, including routing data cabling and electrical conduits along separate but parallel paths. Figure 7$Power and Data Cable Detail$2imilar to F!<. ?, with a top/down "iewpoint. Figure E$Under-Floor Labeling Details$0abeling e(amples for electrical receptacles and multimedia bo(es where structured cabling terminates under the raised floor. This illustration helps ensure that the cabling "endor labels this infrastructure correctly and consistently. Figure =$Fixed Cabinet Installation Detail$!nstructions for installing networ& cabinets. Figure @$Network Row Ele ation$This shows where "arious cabling media, networ& de"ices, and wire management are to be placed in the Data Center %etwor& -ow.
