1. Introduction
Useful energy is a scarce resource and therefore should be managed carefully. In todays world where
energy demand is ever increasing, management of the energy we already have and development of
alternative energy sources is extremely important. In the current Sri Lankan context, focus is also
given to development of local energy sources to support a small community of households.
Sri Lankan energy demand as a whole is fulfilled mainly by biomass. For electricity generation Hydro
power is the main source. According to the Census carried out in 2012 87% of the households are
provided with main grid electricity and about 1.5% of the households are provided with off-grid
electricity. These off grid electricity consist of solar power and micro/mini hydro power. Therefore
when considering alternative energy sources for local poly-generation systems, solar power,
mini/micro hydro power and wind power are the considerations. In addition it is possible to look at
other sources such as tidal power but in Sri Lankan context the yield is not practically sufficient.
When considering an investment for a local poly-generation system the emphasis is more towards
renewable energy sources to ensure sustainability and reduce the environmental impact. Depending
on the geography and weather patterns, the suitability of each of these sources for power generation
varies.
In this report we present the analysis done on developing a local poly generation system and managing
of it for a small community in the area of Deniyaya.

2. Objectives and Methodology

The objective of this study is to analyse the design and development of a local decentralized polygeneration system to support a cluster of houses in the area of Deniyaya. In doing so we conducted a
survey on energy usage of the cluster of households selected. Here the sources of energy in the
viewpoint of the household (Electricity, Biomass, Petrol etc.), details of the equipment used, purposes
of energy consumption and consumption pattern of each equipment.
From this data the total energy usage for the said cluster is calculated with the variation of it over
time (load curve). This data was then used to calculate the Cost of Energy of the said households.
This was then compared with the actual energy consumption recorded through the electricity
consumption meter and records kept by households.
On providing this energy requirement, the sources available in the said area were then identified with
capacities of each of it. When doing so, weather and geographical data of the area was used. The wind
and solar energy variation patterns were obtained from Wind and Solar Maps of Sri Lanka developed
by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the United States. The hydropower potential is
assessed by rainfall data of the area considering a source stream of the River Ging (Ging ganga) which
was flowing near the cluster of houses.
Data acquired by above methods were then used to develop a model for a hybrid power generation
system using Homer energy modelling software optimizing cost and emissions. The data from the
model is used to develop a computational tool for a hybrid poly generation system for the area using
MS Excel software.

2.1. Location Selected

The location of the cluster of houses is in the area of Deniyaya in the District of Matara. It has the
approximate GPS Coordinates of +6.467 in latitude and +80.7983 in longitude. Cluster of houses
selected are located fairly closed to each other. Therefore the distance from each house to the water
stream is assumed to be the same. The distance is 650 m. Grid electricity is available and is currently
used by all five houses. Therefore the power generation system to be designed need not be stand
alone. Furthermore, uses of power for each house is assumed to be similar, i.e. both electricity and
heat are required by all the houses.

3. Energy Demand
The energy demand of the five houses selected varied only slightly as there were no drastic changes
in equipment or usage pattern. The data was collected through filling a data sheet prepared by the
group. The template is as below.

3.1. Cost of Energy

Cost of Energy is the total expense that has to be incurred for power generation of a particular
system. It is calculated to compare different energy sources with different capacities to arrive at a
per unit cost. In the selected cluster of houses electricity is the main energy source. However when
replaced by renewable energy sources this can vary significantly especially due to the sensitivity of
assumed parameters. Calculation of Cost of Energy should be considered under the respective
sources used. However in this project only electricity is considered due to the immateriality of other
sources and lack of available data.
When calculating the electricity cost, the 2011 approved tariff system was used as comparison is
done with the year 2012. (Tariff system changed in April 2013)

4. Available Sources
Decentralized poly-generation system for five domestic houses in a small village in Deniyaya area
has been selected and available power resources were identified. Wind, hydro and solar energy has
been utilized for the poly-generation of electricity and thermal energy to supply the energy demand
at the selected cluster of houses. Heating of water, cooking and electricity demand have separately
analyzed in the computational tool.
This poly-generation system is connected with grid supply and possible to obtain the supply if the
energy generation of the system is insufficient.
Following assumptions were made to approach the design solution for the poly-generation system,
1. Throughout the system lifetime of 20 years the operating and maintenance costs of wind
turbine, solar panels and hydro turbine have been a constant.
2. Air velocities for the wind turbines were taken at the top tower assuming the elevation is
50mm.
3. For the computational tool we took the refrigerator working continuously
4. The runoff factor for the selected area was assumed to be 0.5
5. The initial cost of gas cylinder is negligible and the 13.5kg LP gas cylinder will be used
throughout the year
6. It is assumed that the number of weekdays is 20 and the number of weekend days is 8.
7. For the LP gas demand calculation, it is assumed that cooking hours for daily meal preparing
is 4.
8. Usage of LP gas is same throughout the year for the houses
9. The energy demand for the houses has been prepared only for a day and same in the remaining
days of the month.
10. The yearly energy usage of the houses has been prepared using the data recorded for a small
period of time.
11. Peak value of the demand has been used to calculate the capacity of the sources.

13

5. Demand pattern
The electricity usage of the five houses in the selected area has been recorded on hourly basis for a
day and descriptive template section 3 was created to measure the usage data. Energy demand for the
year was used to evaluate the design of the poly-generation system by considering the variation of
the sources selected for the supply of demand.
Among these houses only two houses have the capability to use hot water supply system, and the
highest demand has used to determine the energy demand need for the water heating activities. In this
system solar power system has been introduced to supply the heating of the water as thermal energy.
Preparation of daily meals is done using liquid petroleum (LP) gas and the demand of the system is
calculated by the number of cylinder used for month. The lower heating value (LHV) of LP gas has
been used to determine heat load required.

The energy demand for the selected five houses is shown in the following graph,

14

Therefore the available energy sources have been analyzed to measure the feasibility for the use as a
poly-generation system. Currently the houses get electricity form the grid connection.

Available wind potential data of the analysis for the selected area, have been estimated using National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) website and the solar potential data also been collected from
NERL website [1]. The respective rainfall data for the selected location have obtained on World
Weather Online website [2].

6. Approach

When designing a poly-generation system the emission rate should be highly considered to lower the
harmful impact to the environment. Therefore when designing a poly-generation system the source
which has lowest emission should be used to lower the harmful impact. Among these energy sources
wind has the lowest emission and solar to the next, so for the design it was considered and the total
demand is supplied by the wind first, then the remaining demand has been supplied by hydro and
solar has been separately used to supply the heating purposes of the houses.

6.1.

Wind Power

Single wind turbine has been used in the poly-generation system, and various wind turbines have
been introduced which have different capacities to design many systems. Therefore the feasibility for
the poly-generation for that are can be evaluated comparing those designs. The power generation for
the wind turbine has been taken for the wind velocities at the top of the turbine assuming at 50m.

Hydro Power

Hydro power is used as a source of energy for the poly-generation system and single hydro power
unit is being used. The water head which could achieved by the water stream was 5m. For the hydro
power generation the catchment area of the selected hydro source 9km2 and it was calculated using
the runoff factors for the area. First stream flow rate was calculated to and then obtained the power

All these three methods is designed considering the emission impact to the environment and they use
wind energy, hydro power and solar power. These three types of energy systems has low emission to
the environment. Therefore when consider about the cost the second system which use 1kW wind
turbine is much suitable for the poly-generation design.

29

9. Discussion on the Viability of the Solution

The system designed in this study inevitably involves a considerable investment. Hence it is essential
to discuss the viability of the solution considering the social sustainability and expected future
expansion of the energy infrastructure. In doing so, consideration should be given to the lifetime of
the project which in this case is 25 years.
The solution presented above considers many renewable energy sources to develop the hybrid polygeneration system. Each of them involves varying aspects to be considered when thinking about
future expansions. The fact that all the sources used are renewable energy in the current context would
mean better sustainability of the model. However the payback of the investment needs to be critically
evaluated.
When considering future expansion of the system and consumption, this solution gives a reasonable
space to adjust in the short run. However in the long run expansion process reaches beyond a certain
value, the design solution may not be sufficient. It can be reasonably expected that better energy
absorption techniques will be invented by then and those can be used to improve the capacity. For an
example solar panels with more absorption capacity can be considered.
When considering the social sustainability of the area, one of the most important facts to consider is
the blockage of water stream due to hydro power generation. This issue can cause severe social
stresses; hence need to be addressed at the beginning. Furthermore the security of the area needs to
be ensured.
