Explain how torque of rotating shafts can be measured by the following methods. Explain their advantages and disadvantages. Digital methods. Using magnetostrictive methods. Explain the following techniques: Magnetic stroboscope. Photoelectric pulse counting stroboscopic methods. Define pressure, how it is different from stress. Explain basic principle involved in Knudsen gauge. Explain Mc Leod gauge. Define anemometers and classify. Calculate the induced EMF in an electromagnetic flow meter due to the flow of a conductive fluid in a pipe with inner diameter of 2.75 cm. The flux density and volume fowl rate . Explain two methods of differential pressure, and absolute pressure measurement methods. Write short notes on vibrating wire force transducer. LVDT is used in an accelerometer to measure seismic mass displacement. The LVDT and signal conditioning outputs are 0.31 mV/mm, with 20 mm cone displacement. The spring constant is 240 N/m and the cone mass is 0.05 kg. Find: (i) Relation between acceleration in m/s2 and the output voltage. (ii) Maximum acceleration measurable and (iii) Natural frequency. Explain the principle & operation of a DC tacho generator. Define comparator and list types of comparators. Explain principle of two comparators with a neat diagram. Define phase angle, frequency and time. Explain digital frequency meter and list its applications. Explain: Pressure gauge method of level measurement. Float type level measurement. Capacitive level measurement.

1 (a) What are the various problems encountered in measurement of temperature by different techniques? (b) What are the advantages in dual detector system for two color pyrometer used to measure temperature? 2 (a) Describe the functioning of stroboscope and explain how speed of a rotating shaft can be measured by single pattern and multi pattern disc. (b) A stroboscope projects 6000 flashes per minute on a 10 patterns mounted on the shaft of a machine. (i) Find the speed of the machine if the disc appears stationary and has a single image of points. (ii) What would be the two possible shaft speeds if the 10 points appears to be revolving once in 12 seconds? 3 What are sine bars? How sine bars are used for measurement of internal and external angles, discuss in detail?

4 (a) What is humidity? Define: (i) Absolute humidity. (ii) Relative humidity. (b) Write short notes on hair hygrometer. 5 (a) Null balance method is extended technique of LVDT pressure transducer. Explain. (b) Explain how resistance strain gauges are used in pressure measurement. 6 In a certain sound level meter, the output voltage was directly proportional to the sound pressure generated by a sound source. The instrument was calibrated with a sound pressure excitation of 1 dyne/cm2 and the meter scale was set at -60 Db referenced to 1 V. For a given noise source, the output voltage developed by the instrument is 6 mV. Determine the sound pressure level of the noise source.

7 (a) Describe one optical method for measurement of torque. (b) Describe mechanical balance type force measurement. 8 Explain on what principle the vortex meter operate along with the diagram.

Optical pyrometer sighted on melting platinum reads 16300C. The spectral emissivity is 0.38. What is the static error of the pyrometer? Explain differential pressure method of measurement of level. Write briefly about ultrasonic method of level measurement. How gyroscopic method is useful for measurement of force and torque explain in detail?
