***** 1 (a) Describe different regimes of compressible flow from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers through schematic diagrams. (b) Define adiabatic process, reversible process and isentropic process. Derive the equation for change in entropy between two states for a calorically perfect gas. 2 (a) Derive area-velocity relation and discuss based on it the nature of flow in converging and diverging ducts at different Mach numbers. (b) Explain the nature of flow in a convergent-divergent duct and comment on why rocket nozzles have large bell like shapes to expand the exhaust gases to high velocities. 3 Explain Prandtl-Meyer expansion through a sketch and derive expressions for calculation of a Prandtl-Meyer expansion wave. 4 Define critical mach number and drag divergence mach number. Explain supercritical airfoil and area rule and discuss how they are helpful in managing drag rise in transonic region. 5 Derive expressions for pressure coefficient, lift coefficient and drag coefficient for supersonic flow past a flat late at an angle of attack using Ackeret linearized theory. 6 Discuss the distinguishing flow characteristics of hypersonic flows. 7 Explain the principle of operation of hot wire anemometer for turbulence measurements. Discuss the advantages and drawbacks of hot wire anemometry. 8 What are the requirements of a wind tunnel balance? Explain the working of a three component balance. *****

(b) Derive integral form of momentum equation assuming suitable flow model. 2 Derive area-Mach number relation for isentropic subsonic-supersonic flow of a perfect gas through convergent-divergent nozzle and discuss the variation of Mach number, pressure ratio and temperature ratio inside the nozzle using diagrams. 3
