1 (a) (b) Starting from the fundamentals derive the expression for the inductance of a 3- un-symmetrically spaced transmission line. Determine the capacitance and charging current per km of a single circuit 220 KV line using two bundle conductors per phase as shown in the figure. The diameter of each conductor is 4.5 cm.

Max Marks: 80

2 (a) (b)

Write a notes an short transmission lines. An overhead 3- transmission line delivers 3500 KW at 11 KV at 0.8 pf lagging. The resistance and reactance of earth conductor are 1.5 and 4 per phase respectively. Determine: (i) Percentage regulation. (ii) Transmission efficiency. A 50 Hz 3-phase transmission line is 280 km long. It has a total series impedance of (35 + j140) ohms and a -6 shunt admittance of 930 x 10 mho. It delivers 40 MW at 220 KV with 90% power factor lagging. Determine the following for a long line: (i) Sending end voltage. (ii) Voltage regulation. (iii) Transmission efficiency. (iv) A, B, C, D constants. Write short notes on Bewleys lattice diagram. An overhead line with surge impedance 400 bifurcates into two lines of surge impedance 400 and 46 respectively. If a surge of 20 KV is incident on the overhead line, Determine the magnitudes of voltage and current which enter the bifurcate lines. Explain the following terms with reference to corona: Critical disruptive voltage. Visual critical voltage. Power loss due to corona. Explain about the Improvement of string efficiency by grading of units. A three phase overhead line is suspended by a suspension type insulator, which consists of three units. The potential across top unit and middle unit are 12 KV and 18 KV respectively. Calculate: (i) The ratio of capacitance between pin and earth to the self capacitance of each unit. (ii) The line voltage and (iii) String efficiency. Write short notes on stringing charts. A 110 KV transmission line has the following data: weight of conductor = 750 kg/km; length of span = 250 m, ultimate strength = 3000 kg, safety factor = 2. Calculate the height above the ground at which the conductor should be supported. Ground clearance required is 10 meters. Show that the ratio of maximum potential gradient to the minimum potential grading is D/d. Where d and D are the conductor and sheath diameter. A single core cable 3 km long has an insulation resistance of 1820 M-ohm. If the conductor diameter is 1.5 cm and sheath diameter is 5 cm, calculate the resistivity of the dielectric in the cable.
