Timeline Mitts

inspired by Westknits Clockwork Shawl. The mitts not only make a nice match but they need only little yarn.

Cuff for both mitts: Using color A loosely cast on 48 stitches and join to work in the round. Divide the stitches evenly on two circs, the first 24 stitches form the back of mitt, the next 24 stitches the palm of the mitt. Work six rounds in 2/2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) OR six rounds in garter stitch (knit 1 round, purl one round repeat 3 times). Left mitt: Knit cuff and continue with pattern section 1: Round 1: Using color B, k2, sl3, k15, sl3, k to end of round Round 2: Using color B, p2, sl3, p15, sl3, p to end of round Round 3: Using color A, k to end of round Round 4: Using color A, p2, k3, p15, k3, p to end of round Repeat these 4 rounds 10 more times, then repeat rounds 1 and 2 once more resulting in 12 color B stripes.

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn (100g/437 yd) Gauge: 25 stitches = 4 (unstretched) Color A: about 105 yards Color B: about 95 yards Needles: size US 1.5 (2.5 mm). I used two circulars but these could be replaced by a set of DPNs or one long circular for magic loop.
Finished size: womens medium, approximately 17 cm (6.5 inches) long from top to bottom, approximately 19 cm (7.5 inches) around, without stretch. The pattern makes these mitts stretch to larger circumferences. Smaller or bigger sizes can be achieved by going down or up in needle size. Keep in mind that you might need additional yarn then.

AT THE SAME TIME start the thumb gusset increase during the 10th repetition in round 4 (See thumb gusset instructions). Using color A knit 6 rounds in garter stitch (k 1 rd, p 1 rd, repeat 3 times) and continue with pattern section 2: Round 1: Using color B, k11, sl3, k to end of round Round 2: Using color B, p11, sl 3, p to end of round Round 3: Using color A, k to end of round Round 4: Using color A, p11, k3, p to end of round Repeat these 4 rounds 10 more times, then repeat rounds 1 and 2 once more resulting in 12 color B stripes. AT THE SAME TIME end the gusset increase during the 6th repetition in round 3 (See thumb gusset instructions). Using color A knit 6 rounds in garter stitch (k 1 rd, p 1 rd, repeat 3 times) and bind off loosely.

Note: There is a difference between right and left mitt. Please read through the whole pattern before you start to knit. Abbreviations: rd: round k: knit p: purl sl: slip purlwise with yarn in back pm: place marker slm: slip marker M1: make one purlwise (pick up the strand between stitches from the front and purl through the back loop)

AT THE SAME TIME start the thumb gusset increase during the 10th repetition in round 4 (See thumb gusset instructions). Using color A knit 6 rounds in garter stitch (k 1 rd, p 1 rd, repeat 3 times) and bind off loosely.

Thumb Gusset: Start the gusset increase during the 10th repeat of the pattern section. In round 4 work the first 24 stitches according to the pattern, then for left mitt: p22, pm, M1, p1, M1, pm, p1, for right mitt: p1, pm, M1, p1, M1, pm, p to end of round. The three stitches between the markers form the base of the gusset increase. Continue increasing every fourth round: Work according to the pattern until you reach the marker, slm, M1, p to next marker, M1, slm, p to end of round. The thumb gusset is completed once you have 17 stitches between the markers. Work the next two rounds according to the pattern. In the following round (the 3rd round in the 5th repeat of the second pattern section) place the 17 thumb gusset stitches on waste yarn or a stitch holder. Cast on (e. g. by using the backward loop cast on) 3 stitches to close the gap and continue in pattern. You now have 50 stitches. Continue in pattern. Thumb: Return thumb stitches to needles and cast on additional 3 stitches = total of 20 stitches. Using color A work 2 rounds in garter stitch (k 1 rd, p 1 rd) Using color B work 2 rounds in garter stitch Repeat these four rounds once more and end with 6 rounds in garter stitch in color A. Bind off loosely. Finishing: Weave in all ends, using thumb ends to close any gaps between thumb and hand. ENJOY!

The example was knit out of the remaining yarn from my Clockwork Shawl in Cascade Yarn Heritage in black and Heritage Paint in colorway Thunder ( 75 % Merino Superwash/ 25 % Nylon, 437 yds / 400 m per 100 g skein).
