They will also be reminded to be clear to and respectful of others online. Students will explore the concept of tone, then compare and contrast what it is like to communicate face to face versus online. In addition, students learn some rules that can help them express themselves clearly and respectfully when they write e-mail messages. The students will then apply what they have learned by editing an e-mail message. Learning Objectives Students will... How can you make sure your e-mails are clear and respectful?

Introduction Media specialist will ask students the following questions: What are some examples of how to be clear to and respectful of others when you are talking in school? o Sample responses: Try to talk clearly, and explain what you mean if someone doesnt understand Listen to what other people have to say Take turns talking Speak instead of shouting Dont make fun of people Say please and thank you Say nice things to people What do you think might happen if people are not clear and respectful of others when they are talking at school? o Peoples feelings will get hurt o People will become: angry upset Teach 1 Mindful Messaging The media specialist will remind students that they not only need to be clear to and respectful of others face-to-face but also online. She will show students the video entitled Mindful Messaging. Students will recount what they saw in the video. Teach 2 E-mail Edit Media specialist will inform students there are some rules they can follow to make sure they are being clear and polite when they send messages electronically, especially through email. She will distribute the E-mail Edit Student Handout, one for each student. The media specialist will review the Check before You Send questions at the top of the handout with the class, and invite students to share any additional rules they can

think of. She will also explain to students that they will edit the e-mail message on the handout to make sure it is clear and polite. Assessment Media specialist will ask students to turn the E-mail Edit Student Handout over. She will explain to them that the questions on back of the handout will be used to assess their understanding of the lesson objectives. Students will complete the assessment. Closing Wrap-up Media specialist will ask the following questions: What are some ways you can be clear and respectful in the way you talk to others in school? o Sample responses: Try to talk clearly, and explain what you mean if someone doesnt understand Listen to what other people have to say Take turns talking Speak instead of shouting Dont make fun of people Say please and thank you Say nice things to people Why do you need to be careful when you write an e-mail, a text message, or a letter? o People may not understand your tone.
