By Quirico M. Gorpido, Jr.

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-A two-day jobs fair sponsored by the provincial
government of Southern Leyte and the city government of Maasin was held here
recently at the DILG gymnasium, capitol site.
The job recruitment activities were participated in by 14 recruitment agencies
from the three places of Cebu City, Taclobn City and Metro Manila. More or less
500 applicants from this city and in different municipalities of this province
including the neighboring towns of Matalom, Bato and Hilongos have flocked to the
designated venue from morning till 5 in the afternoon.
Job availabilities or vacancies from different countries like Singapore,
Malaysia, Taiwan, Hongkong, Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Qatar, Cyprus,
Middle East and Europe were posted on doors and walls of the venue for the
applicants and job seekers’ viewing and selection.
Requirements for the applicants were likewise posted side by side with
available jobs that were classified into skilled and non-skilled workers.
Available jobs were too numerous to mention, among others, like domestic
helpers,nurses,Civil
Engineers,bakers,welders,painters,secretaries/receptionists,accountants,salesladie
s/cashiers,draftsmen,Project Supervisor,waiters/hostess,electrical planner,

Government agencies that assisted the recruitment agencies for the applicants’
easily accessibility for the acquisition of some necessary requirements were the
National Statistics Office(for birth certificates authentications), National
Bureau of Investigation(for clearance of any crime record),Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration(for inclusion to record applicants for oversea
works),Philippine Regulatory Commission(for issuance of certificates or
authentication of board passers),Post Office(for payment in the issuance of NBI
clearances for the applicants)and the Dept.of Foreign Affairs(for the renewal of
passports).
Additionally, the Technical Education Skills Development Authority was also
present. It was represented by its support staff Reden Biong Mondragon. Mondragon
has estimated that about 100 TESDA scholar graduates coming from different
municipalities of this province have come to apply at jobs fair.
He informed that TESDA’s presence was mainly to provide assistance to their
graduate scholars-applicants in case some problems would arise during their job
applications.
Asked if those accepted qualified applicants were sure to land jobs. A lady
from one of the recruitment agencies explained that once applicants were accepted
they have to undergo medical examinations. If they will pass in the physical
examinations, they will be interviewed by their respective employers. Those who
will pass the interviews will be the one’s who are accepted.
A lady of another recruitment agency who was accepting job applicants has
another explanation. She said that her agency will process all the necessary
papers from qualified applicants. She claimed they will be the one’s to send them
off to their different employers’ abroad.Obviously, fare travel for job seekers
are salary deductions.
Like in other previous jobs fair here, there were applicants who did not meet
the necessary requirements to the kind of jobs that they were applying.
However, those who remained jobless for many years or those who were retrenched
due to cost-cutting measures by the companies they were working before were
hopeful that they will be hired.(Quirico M. Gorpido,Jr.)
