WHAT ABOUT BURSARIES? The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme for Teachers enables students of high academic promise and commitment to undertake initial teacher education and upon qualication to enter the service of provincial departments of education. The bursaries are designed to help meet the national need for high calibre teachers in priority areas. For more information go to the website www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za.

Besides the usual merit bursaries of the University, the Faculty of Education also offers bursaries to students performing well in their studies. Apart from the above-mentioned bursary options, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) may be contacted at 011 559 3642/3906/4035/3768/3578 on the Auckland Park Campus (APK) and 011 559 5507/5509 on the Soweto Campus (SWC). Email: nsfas@uj.ac.za Closing date for bursary applications is 1 November 2013. Please note: Students must pay their own registration fees irrespective of whether they have applied for bursaries. The registration fee this year was R3350.00. This amount will increase in 2014. Please note: Students who are employed full-time may only register for the part-time programme. If a student starts full-time work during the year, the university must be informed in writing about this in order to change the registration of the student to part- time.
The Orientation Seminar in January is compulsory. Prescribed periods of school experience must be completed in approved schools during the time of study. Students may be expected to complete these periods of practical teaching during university holidays. The university reserves the right to place students in schools in line with the training needs.
The BEd Honours programmes strive to consolidate and deepen students expertise in Education as well as their academic and practical competence in the specialization within Education. It also strives to develop research capacity in the methodology of Education as eld of study. BEd HONOURS IN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (the closing date for application to this programme is 31 May 2013) The same entry requirements as for the other BEd Honours programmes apply in this programme but with the following additional selection criteria: In order to be selected for this degree a candidate must have Psychology 3 and Education 3. Candidates who apply for this degree will undergo a selection process. The selection process is based on previous academic achievement, personal skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to work in a team and the potential to learn the necessary skills to become an effective counsellor. The BEd Honours programme in Educational Psychology serves to deepen and consolidate students expertise in Education as well as academic and practical competence in Educational Psychology within Education as a eld of practice. It also serves to develop research capacity in methodology and techniques of Education as eld of study.
The purpose of the practicum is to develop core competencies in the practical eld of school counselling.
Information and Communication Technology in Education Foundation Phase education Teaching Methodology Mathematics Education (only full dissertation) Science Education (Natural, Physical and Life Sciences) (only full dissertation) Sociology of Education (only full dissertation) Technology Education (only full dissertation) Educational Management Educational Psychology (coursework, minor dissertation and internship). In order to register as an educational psychologist with the Health Professions Council, the candidate must, apart from having obtained the MEd (Educational Psychology) degree, also complete an internship at an institution approved by the said Council. This internship does not, however, form part of the requirements for obtaining the degree.
Additional selection criteria Applicants ability to communicate both in oral and written format may be assessed in a screening procedure. Prociency in a word processing package and internet use is strongly recommended. PHILOSOPHIAE DOCTOR (EDUCATION) RULES OF ACCESS Prospective candidates will have obtained an MEd OR Prospective candidates will have obtained a teachers diploma/ teaching qualication, plus an appropriate masters degree as well as work experience in the eld of study. The Education knowledge of such candidates will be assessed by the Head of Department and prospective supervisor and a reading programme may be prescribed prior to allowing registration. ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA Academic performance: students need to have attained a minimum of 65% in their previous degree. If 65% was not attained, prior learning and experience in the eld may be taken into consideration and students could be allowed to register based on a pre-registration research proposal which is accepted by the Department in which the student will be registering.
