THE

VIRTUAL LEADERSHIP
WORKSHOP

Strategic thinking will benefit leaders and teams in all organizations, as well as individuals who want to truly ignite positive change.

TOOLS FOR REAL VIRTUAL SUCCESS

WHY A WORKSHOP ON VIRTUAL LEADERSHIP? Organizations around the world are rapidly trending towards virtual teams. As the business world becomes smaller and options for employment become ever more varied, companies are increasingly seeing the value of having employees who work in virtual environments. Leaders can now draw upon and leverage talent from individuals located all over the globe, using communication technology to lead from a distance. While virtual teams do offer distinct advantages for organizations, there are also a number of common challenges that arise for individuals who lead virtual teams. However, if virtual leaders are able to bridge the gap between themselves and the team (and are able to help their team members bridge the gap between themselves and their teammates), they will see results that cannot be denied. Their teams will flourish, and the business will follow suit. The Virtual Leadership Workshop offers strategies, methods, and tools participants can use to diagnose and address these and other issues, allowing them to better accomplish the work of the organization and effect a positive impact on the organizations bottom line through the contributions of their virtual teams. Because each organizations virtual teams may differ significantly from the next, the Virtual Leadership Workshop is custom-built through creative collaboration between CMOE and the client organization using an a la carte approach to the topics: using a menu of available options, the client chooses the topics that are most relevant to the organization, and CMOE tailors a Virtual Leadership workshop that appropriately reflects those needs. Regardless of the topics chosen, the Virtual Leadership Workshop is an interactive and skill-focused learning experience where participants explore the timely and relevant issues that virtual leaders face as they work through many different kinds of obstacles: time zones, geographic distance, cultural differenceseven boundaries that may exist within the organization itself. OBJECTIVES In the virtual leadership workshop, participants will: 1. Build awareness about the essential ingredients and qualities needed to lead a high-performing virtual team. 2. Find ways to create positive working relationships and a greater sense of inclusion among virtual team members. 3. Assess their strengths and diagnose opportunities for improvement as virtual leaders. 4. Explore strategies and identify tools for enhancing their ability to lead others virtually. 5. Network with and learn from other virtual leaders. 6. Evaluate their passion for and commitment to the timeless principles of leadership. 7. Leverage the cultural, experiential, and locational diversity of team members. 8. Break the barriers to and facilitate collaboration in a virtual environment.

HOW THE WORKSHOP IS OFFERED The Virtual Leadership Workshop can be delivered in a oneor two-day format. During the workshop, participants receive a brief introduction to the overarching characteristics of effective leadership. Depending on your preferred approach, we can either use CMOEs Leadership Model or your organizations internal leadership model competencies to teach these principles. Once the foundation of leadership has been established, the workshop then focuses on the Four Keys to Virtual Leadership that address the unique challenges of virtual leadership and are comprised of the following topics: 1. Adapt Your Communication Communicating as a virtual leader does not allow for a one-size-fits-all approach. You will find greater success by diagnosing the situation, considering the person, and adapting your communication style, while also choosing the appropriate virtual-communication tool for the message you wish to send. 2. Coach and Give Feedback Virtual leaders are not onsite to observe and supervise in the same way they would in a face-to-face leadership situation. Therefore, the virtual leader must depend on virtual coaching to accomplish the teams goals in a virtual setting. 3. Build a Relationship Virtual team members commonly feel isolated and detached from their virtual leaders due to the lack of face-to-face interaction in their relationship. The evolution of communication technology has made it easier to connect with virtual team members, but there is still a great need to build genuine relationships that are founded upon mutual trust and respect. Through stronger relationship ties, virtual leaders will be better able to inspire others, ensure alignment, increase motivation, share expectations, and have open communication with their virtual team members. 4. Create a Community Virtual team members often feel disengaged from other members of their team and may find it difficult to connect, align, and collaborate with other team members, both virtual and otherwise. To overcome this challenge, virtual leaders need to build a virtual community in the spirit of fellowship and inclusion, as well as creating a connection between individual performance and the overall mission of the team and organization.
