Yesterday we talked about verb tenses

What is that again? Verb tense tells when the action takes place Past Present Future

Good writers understand verb tense and how important it is to the reader. As good writers, we need to do this too.

Good writers make sure their verb tenses all match in the same piece of writing Look at this:

On Saturday mornings, the first sound I hear is my little brothers video game music. I put my head under the pillow, but the boing-boing-swupswup is too much. I might as well get up. I pulled off my sheet and I make some breakfast. What will it be? Cereal? Yes, I take the Cinnamon Toast Crunch off the shelf. -- Sarah
What do you notice?

Sometimes, good writers change their verb tense for effect, like a flashback.
This is different than the majority of the writing piece though, and even in that section, the verb tense will stay the same. So what do we need to understand? Verb tense can either make or break a piece of writing. Good writers use the same verb tense to help the reader understand better.

Lets look at how authors do this more closely: In your groups: 1. Sort your words into groups 2. In a moment, I will give you a passage 3. Choose the words you want to put in the passage. 4. Write your passage in your spiral.

HW: 1. Practice writing all in one verb tense. 2. Write a short paragraph about a quick moment in your day. (5-8 sentences) 3. Decide ahead of time if youre going to write in the past, present, or future tense. 4. All of your main verbs should be in the same verb tense.

Okay, so weve talked about the importance of verb tense in our writing. But perhaps youve noticed that some verbs look a little funny in different tenses?
These verbs are called irregular verbs. Irregular verbs dont follow the add -ed rule to become past tense verbs.

Irregular verbs do not follow the add ed rule to become past tense verbs. Can you think of any irregular verbs?

Unfortunately, irregular verbs are like our irregular plural nouns we just have to know them and how to spell them.
