INTRODUCTION
Reading means different things to different people. For some, it is recognizing
written words, while for others it is an opportunity to teach pronunciation and
practice speaking. However, reading always has a purpose. It is something that
we do every day, which is an integral part of our daily lives, but taken very much
for granted. The reason for reading depends very much on purpose for reading.
Reading has three main purposes, for survival, for learning and for pleasure.
Reading for survival is considered to be in response to our environment, to find
information including street signs, advertising and timetables. It depends very
much on the day-to-day needs of the reader and often involves an immediate
response to a situation. In contrast, reading for learning is considered to be the
type of reading done in the classroom and is goal oriented. Above all, the central
ideas behind reading are:

The idea of meaning

The transfer of meaning from one mind to another

How we get meaning by reading

How the writer, the reader and the text all contribute to the process.

Thus, it is crucial for the teacher to equip the students with the basic skills on
reading to produce good and critical readers.

WHAT IS SEED PROGRAMME?

SEED Programme is a reading programme in the aim at exposing students
to new vocabularies and useful phrases of English. The vocabularies and
phrases are provided with the Malay translation, thus it will easier for the
students to make reference from any difficult and unfamiliar words. The
reading materials are from newspaper articles, namely The Star and The
New Straits Times which are regarded as authentic material. The use of
authentic materials in the classroom is discussed, with the students

benefiting from the exposure to real language being used in the real
context. Other aspects which prove positive when using authentic
materials are that they highly motivating, giving a sense of achievement
when understood and encourage further reading. Furthermore, the
language is versatile and updated that ease the teaching and learning
process. More to the point, the learners will encounter the real world
language and how it is being used as opposed to the artificial language
used in the text book. Thus, the role of teacher is not to delude the
language learners, but to prepare and aware of the necessary skills on
how language is actually used.

WHY SEED PROGRAMME

Through observation, students are lacked of vocabularies which hamper
their ability to write and speak in the target language. Students are
reluctant to speak English due to insufficient vocabularies and confident.
Apart from that, they are fear to speak as they are lack of encouragement
from the environment, namely teachers, friends and parents. Therefore,
from the new vocabularies and phrases learned every day, it is hope that
students are able to improve their command of English and in return well
verse in the target language. The SEED itself means the small hard part
produced by a plant preserved for growing a new crop. Thus, the students
are seen as a seed that have the potential to grow aided with broad and
extensive vocabularies.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SEED PROGRAMME

It is an English Reading Programme during morning assembly whereby the
students are given silent reading moments for 2 minutes. After that, an
English teacher will read aloud the text to the students. This is to ensure
that the students hear the correct pronunciations of the target language.
At the same time, the English teachers have to choose students who have
the ability to read the text with good pronunciation. This group of students
will later take teachers responsibility to read the text during assembly.
This is to boost the students confident in reading as well as to provide the
room for improvement in English. The handouts need to be keep in the
pocket file give and students are advised to keep those handouts for the
teaching and learning process.

THE OUTCOME OF SEED PROGRAMME

Through the implementation of SEED Programme, students show ongoing
improvement in the attitude towards English language. They are more
confident to converse and write in English as they are equipped with new
vocabularies everyday. As students hear the correct pronunciation of the
target language, they show positive enhancement in their reading skills.
Apart from that, teachers can easily access students reading ability as
the text is specifically mend based on students command of language.
