How we achieved product specific put away rules in WMS

Abstract

The purpose of this case study is to describe how we achieved Put away product wise in
WMS.

Case History
Our client is of FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) type and they are having
different customers located across the world and they deal with more than 2000
items.

The business scenario is as follows:

Client has totally eight warehouses that are WMS enabled and has around 12000
locators in them. They have different warehouses for storing dry, chilled and
frozen items. Client needs the items that are received into the warehouses as per
the following requirements.

1. All Chilled items should go to the chilled sub Inventory, similarly dry Items to
dry sub Inventory and frozen items to Frozen one

2. All items when received into the warehouse should suggest BULK FACE.

3. In that BULK FACE should suggest empty location.

For this requirement we have defined sub Inventories as BULK CHILL, BULK DRY,
BULK FROZ etc. once the material is received into the warehouse based on Put away
rule defined in WMS, system should suggest putting the items in the BULK sub
Inventory (i.e) either in Chilled (or) Frozen (or) Dry and after that system should check
for empty location in that sub Inventory.
Analysis

This is done as per the following steps:

• In Item category a segment is defined as type for capturing items which are
chilled / frozen / dry.
• Capacities for each locator are defined in Stock Locators based on the client
requirements.
• Put away rules to be defined as Put away rule for BLO Chilled (or) Put away rule
for BLO Dry (or) Put away rule for BLO frozen and include parameter as BULK
CHILL (or) BULK DRY (or) BULK FROZ in addition to that define AND
condition as Constant Number as Zero(0)
• Define Strategy as Put Away strategy for BLO Chilled (or) Put Away strategy for
BLO Dry (or) Put away strategy for BLO Frozen.
• In Rules work bench attach the above strategy and the product based on the
requirement and date type as Always based on the requirement.
• Enable the check box in the rules work bench and save.
• Then run the concurrent program “Generate All Rules “in Warehouse Manager
Responsibility.

Step 3 : Defined Rules Work bench.

 • We have done the set up as per the above and when a shipment is received into
the warehouse say for e.g an item BGIN0011 is received in telnet / mobile for
which we have defined as “Put away strategy for BLO Chilled” and attached in
the rules work bench. The system will suggest u to put that item in BULK CHILL
sub Inventory and based on the capacity given in the locators the system will
suggest to put in an empty location.
• Similarly an Item BIND0001 is defined in the rules work bench as “Put away
strategy for BLO Dry”, so when this item is received in the warehouse the system
will suggest BULK DRY sub Inventory and based on the capacity given in the
locator will suggest an empty location.
• An frozen item will also be received in the same way as the above by attaching
“Put away strategy for BLO frozen” and based on capacity will suggest empty
location.

Results, Conclusion and Learning’s

1. By Using Put away rules in the Ware House Management, we
achieved the product specific put away rules.

2. To achieve this functionality, customer should implement Warehouse

Management module.
