Comparision of improvement of heat transfer in a tube Between inserting helical wire into this and plain tube

Introduction
. A majority of heat exchangers used in thermal powerplants, chemical processing plants, air conditioning equipment, and refrigerators, petrochemical, biomedical and food processing plants serve to heat and cool different types of fluids. Both the mass and dimension of heat xchanger employed are increasing Are more unit power and volume of production.in this there of cost and dimension. investment

!or improving the overall thermal efficiency of any heat exchanger ,we need the techniques "o reduce cost and si#e of heat exchanger. there are three method of this.this technique is called heat transfer augmentation technique.this technique reduces the thermal resistance and increases the heat transfer coefficient.in this technique heat transfer increases pressure drop.when pressure drop increases $inetic energy.then velocity increases. we $now that %eynolds no is a function of velocity. "hen %eynolds no increases.we $now that nusselts no is a funcftion of %eynolds no.&usselts no is a function of heat transfer coefficient.thus heat transfer coefficient increases .thus 'eat transfer increases. "his are the indicative of the improvement of performance of heat exchangers )ecrease ( in heat transfer surface area, si#e, and hence the weight of a heat exchanger for a given heat duty and pressure drop or pumping power Increase ( in heat transfer rate for a given si#e, flow rate, and pressure drop. %eduction ( in pumping power for a given si#e and heat duty %eduction ( in fouling of heat exchangers

improvement of rate of heat transfer.this technique is very complex from the use and design point of view.it has limited application. ,arious active technique are as follows. *+mechanical aids -+surface vibration .+jet impignent -. /assive method 0 in which method twisted tape ,helical wire coil, or any other obstructive )evice is inserted into this or we can say that it is the geometrical and surface modification. It alters the existing flow behaviour and increases the pressure drop.then heat transfer coefficient increases.there are various method of passive technique. *+inserting wire coil -+inserting twistwd tubes .+treated surfaces 1+rough surfaces 2+by using fin 3+surface tension device .. Compound method+ in this both active and passive method are used in combinanation "o improve the thermo hydraulic efficiency of heat exchanger. *+rough tube wall with twistwd tubes -+rough cylinder with acoustic vibration

*+by inserting wire coil It consists of helical coil spring.which acts as non integral roughness.in turbulent !low dominant thermal resistance is limited to thin viscous sub layer.wire coil4ixes the flow in viscous sublayer near the wall quite effectively.then pressure )rop increases and $inetic energy increases.then %eynolds no and nussselts &o increases.nusselts no is a function of heat transfer coefficient.then heat transfer Increases. In these devices secondary flows or vortices are generated due to curvature of the coils which promotes higher heat transfer coefficient in single phase flows. "here are several advantage in relation to other methods. asy installation and removal 5ow cost in manufacturing /ossibility of installation in an existing smoth tube 5ess fouling in chemical industry and refinery

By using helical wire in a tube , it decreases the thic$ness of the boundry layer "hen flow disturbance increases pressu re drop into the tube.

It also increases viscous effect of fluid because flow area decreases It increases flow velocity and it leads to significant secondry flows. "he secondry flow >ives better thermal contact between surface and fluid, which increases the thermal >radient and increases the thermal efficiency. "he wire coil is more efficient in turbulent flow compared with laminar flow. Because "urbulent flow mixes the flow near the viscous sublayer. "hus by using helical wire in a tube increases heat transfer rate more effectively with less cost.
