Basic Questions
What book are we studying this year?

1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians

Is there a certain translation of the Bible we should be using?

Study only the New International Version. While other versions are appropriate for
personal edification and knowledge, they are not used to create the questions and answers
for the EFCA’s bible quizzing. Be aware, if your answer is word-perfect from another
translation, it can still be wrong if it does not match the NIV.

What kinds of questions are asked in Bible Quizzing?

There are four kinds of questions generally used:

1. Regular Questions: These questions usually have simple and straightforward
answers. Answers do not need to be word-perfect, but should demonstrate that
the quizzer knows what they are talking about.
2. Multi-part Questions: These questions are answered with a list of answers. If the
list is between 2 parts and 6 parts, the quiz master will tell you when asking the
question. If the list is more than 6 parts, they will simply tell you it is a multi-part
answer.
3. Reference Questions: Some questions may be identical in different parts of the
book, but have very different answers. In this case, the quiz master will tell you
the reference of where the question comes from before asking it. For these
questions, answers are expected to be word-perfect, and if the quizzer jumps
before the full question is asked, they must complete the question, as well.
4. Situation Questions: While it is important to know what was said in scripture, it
is also important to know who said it and why. For situation questions, the quiz
master will tell you what he wants to know about a statement and then will read
the statement. If the quizzer jumps before the full statement is said, they must
complete it as well.
5. Finish-the-Verse Questions: While quizzing in general is targeted to understand
the text, Finish-the-Verse questions are targeted at exact Bible Memorization. A
number of verses from the text will be chosen as possible FTV questions, and at
least 3 will be asked in each quiz. A quizzer must answer these questions word-
perfect, including the whole verse (or several verses) in the FTV listing, with
reference.
Can we have an example of each type of question?

1. Regular Question:
Q: For the message of the cross is foolishness to WHO?
A: Those who are perishing (1 Corinthians 1:18)

2. Multi-Part Question:
Q: 4 Part: You yourselves are WHAT?
A: (1) Our letter, (2) written on our hearts, (3) known and (4) read by everybody.
(2 Cointhians 3:2)

3. Reference Question:

Q: According to 2 Corinthians 3:3, WHAT letter?

A: You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but
with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

4. Situation Question:

Q: How is it said? - “He catches the wise in their craftiness"

A: As it is written (1 Corinthians 3:19)

5. Finish-the-Verse Question:

Q: Finish this Verse: “Love is patient,...”

A: “...love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.“" (1 Corinthians 13:4)

How much time do I have to answer a question?

Quizzers have 30 seconds to answer most questions. But for Finish-the-Verse and Multi-
Part questions, quizzers have 45 seconds.

How do you score points in bible quizzing?

Answering a question correctly will gain you 20 points for the team. If you answer 5
questions correctly (4 for lower division), you “quiz out” and can not answer any more
questions. If you also got no questions wrong, you get a 10 point bonus on quizzing out.
Also, a team can earn a 10 point bonus when 4 quizzers have answered a question
correctly, and 10 more points when a 5th quizzer answers correctly.

If you get a question wrong, your team loses 10 points and the other team has a chance to
answer a bonus question to gain 10 points. If you answer 3 questions wrong per quiz,
you “quiz out wrong” and can not answer any more questions.

Are there different levels for Bible Quizzing?

For the major meets, we break up by grade into Lower Division (7th - 9th grade) and
Upper Division (10th - 12th grade).

For weekly practices and lesser meets, teams are chosen by other criteria such as skill
level, complementary talents, etc. in whatever form is best for the group as a whole.

site provides the ability to look up ANY passage of scripture in many various translations.
Useful for Bible Study in general, but especially for the quizzer looking for a certain
passage or FTV section. QUIZZERS PLEASE NOTE: All of quizzing is done in the
New International Version (NOT the New International Version - UK). If you happen to
use this site and learn an alternate translation for a verse, you WILL be counted wrong in
competition and practice!
