Presented by
Puget Sound School Gardens Collective and Seattle Tilth
Want to help move educational gardens forward? Please join us for a day-long
informative, fun-filled Garden Educator’s workshop!
Purpose of the Workshop: To advance existing school garden efforts by learning more
about best practices in garden-based learning from an established evidenced-
based program -- Urban Sprouts in San Francisco, CA, www.urbansprouts.org. This will
also be a time to connect with current educators within the Puget Sound region to share
resources and lessons learned.
Workshop Goals
School gardens are a hands-on learning environment for teaching children and youth
directly about the environment, food, and sustainability. Gardens are also used to
illustrate lessons within the academic studies of science, math, history, health, nutrition,
reading, and social studies. Abby Jaramillo of Urban Sprouts will share with us the tools
needed to implement a school-wide garden program that will positively effect youth and
their families, plus the tools to document and measure program success and results.
Workshop topics will cover:
Core Theory and Frameworks: the power of school gardens and the research behind
them
From Theory to Practice: using planning and design tools, experiencing the physical
school garden learning environment
Making your Case & Building your Team: exercises will prepare participants to
increase school and community involvement in the school garden
Measuring your Success: interactive and dynamic evaluation techniques participants
can implement
Where: Good Sheperd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103, Room 202
When: October 16, 2009, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
