ENGR 222 Engineering Mechanics Winter, 2014 Edward F.

. Cross School of Engineering Walla Walla University Seventh-day Adventist Higher Education Instructor: Dr. Brian Roth Office: CSP 268 Office Hours: 10-11am; other times by appointment Email: brian.roth@wallawalla.edu Phone: (509) 527-2341 Course Information: Days: MWF Time: 11:00-11:50 am Location: CSP 154 Credits: 3 Required Textbook: Engineering Mechanics: Statics & Dynamics, 13th Edition, Hibbeler, Prentice Hall, 2013. Course Description: (for ENGR 221-223) Introduction to two- and three-dimensional equilibria employing vector algebra; friction; centroids and centers of mass, virtual work, and moments of inertia. One- and two-dimensional kinetics and kinematics of rigid bodies by vector calculus; dynamics of rotation, translation, and plane motion; relative motion; work and energy; impulse and momentum. Corequisite: MATH 283. Course Goals: 1. Students will be able to compute the center of gravity, center of mass, or centroid of a body. 2. Students will be able to compute mass and area moments of inertia, and correctly distinguish between them. 3. Students will be able to predict the motion of a particle using Newtons Laws and concepts from work-and-energy and impulse-and-momentum. 4. Students will design, analyze, construct, and test simple prototypes based on course concepts. University Core Values: Walla Walla University is a community of faith and discovery committed to our core values: Excellence in thought, Generosity in service, Beauty in expression, and Faith in God. Attendance: Attendance is an integral part of the learning experience. Attendance (or lack thereof) is typically reflected in ones performance and, as a result, in ones final grade. Please plan to attend all lectures. Students are responsible for all announcements and assignments given during class. Evaluation: Students final grades will be based upon their performance in the following areas: Homework 18% Concept Questions 5% Projects 7% Midterm Exams 40% Final Exam 30% Grades will be earned according to overall percentages. Pluses and minuses will be awarded according to where you fall within the grade range. The instructor reserves the right to issue a better grade than indicated by the % earned by the student. A 90% - 100% C 70% - 80% B 80% - 90% D 60% - 70%

Homework: All assignments must be submitted before the class period that follows their assignment. For example, problems assigned on Monday are due on Wednesday at 11am. No late work will be accepted. However, each students two lowest homework scores will be dropped. Concept Questions: Concept questions will be presented at the beginning of most classes. These questions are designed to test students understanding of a fundamental concept from the previous class periods lecture. Concept questions are particularly important because they mirror the content and format of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam a comprehensive exam taken in the senior year that serves as the first step toward professional licensure. If missed, concept questions cannot be made up. However, each students three lowest scores will be dropped. Exams: The course includes two midterms and one final exam. The final will be comprehensive, with emphasis on new material. All exams will be closed book, but you may bring one 3 x 5 card of notes to each midterm and three 3 x 5 cards of notes to the final exam. Grading and Returned Materials: All materials submitted by a student will be evaluated in a timely manner (typically 2 weeks). Exams will be scored and be accessible for viewing by a student before the next exam in a given course. The score for each class requirement may be accessed on the course website. Graded materials will be returned to students at the beginning of class (except Concept Qs, which will be graded in class). Progress Reports: Although a student can determine their tentative course grade at any time, Walla Walla University has a special alert to notify students of poor academic performance. Progress reports are generally mailed to students who are earning a grade of C- (or lower) during the third and seventh weeks of the quarter. Students can also check for progress reports via their WWU registration account. Professionalism: Millions (and perhaps billions) of dollars are lost each year by engineers due to errors and omissions. Many grant apps and contract proposals are discarded without review because they do not meet the required format guidelines. The school of engineering seeks to help you to develop the habit of neat, accurate work through its Homework Format Standard. A copy of this document is posted on the course website. Please review the document carefully and remember to follow it. Homework that does not meet this standard will receive a reduced grade or be returned ungraded. Integrity: You are encouraged to consult with classmates while completing your homework. However, the work that you submit must reflect your own independent thought and effort. The guiding principle when determining whether a specific action is appropriate is as follows: Does your approach maximize your learning? For example, a verbal discussion of the general solution approach can improve learning and efficiency. In addition, comparing answers after individually completing a homework problem can improve learning, because it enables you to catch and correct mistakes and misconceptions. However, copying the methods, solutions and/or answers of your classmates does not provide you with the practice necessary to learn the material. Similarly, using the solutions manual is not an effective way to learn. If you submit an assignment or exam on which you copied from a classmate or referenced the solutions manual, you have cheated. Cheating may be rewarded with an F, for the course.
