4.5 Fabrication

4.5.1 The strand direction of lay of the outer layer shall be left-hand lay and
shall be reversed in successive layer. A left-hand lay is defined as a
counter-clockwise twist away from the observer.

4.5.2 All wires shall be stranded with uniform tension. Stranding shall be
sufficiently close to ensure no appreciable reduction in diameter when
stressed to ten percent (10%) of the minimum breaking strength.

4.5.3 The 7-wire strand shall consist of a center wire with a 6-wire layer
concentrically twisted over it with a uniform pitch of not more than 16
times the specified nominal diameter of the strand.

4.5.4 The 19-wire strand shall consist of a center wire with a 6-wire layer
concentrically twisted over it, having a right lay and a uniform pitch of
not more than 16 times the nominal diameter of the wires. A 12-wire
outer layer, having a left lay shall be concentrically twisted over the 7-
wire core and shall have uniform pitch of not more than 16 times the
specified nominal diameter of the strand.

4.5.5 All wires in the strand shall lie naturally in their true position in the
completed strand. They shall tend to remain in position when the strand
is cut at any point or be readily replaced by hand and then remain in
position.

4.5.6 J oints or splices may be made in the individual wires before drawing to
final size or in the finished wires composing the strand. J oints made in
individual finished wires shall be acceptable provided there is no more
than one joint in any 150 ft (45.7 m) section of the completed strand

Date of Approval: March 13, 2006

and the location of each joint is marked on the strand with paint or
some other distinguishing mark.

4.5.7 There shall be no strand joints or strand splices in any length of the
completed strand.

4.5.8 The strand shall be free from imperfections not consistent with good
commercial practices.

4.6 Elongation

4.6.1 The elongation of the high strength grade steel strand in 24 inch (610
mm) shall not be less than five percent (5%).

4.6.2 The elongation tests shall be made on lengths of strand, which do not
contain wire joints.

4.6.3 Elongation shall be observed while applying tension load and reading
shall be taken when fracture occurs.

4.7 Size Variations

The diameter of the zinc-coated wire forming the strand shall not vary more
than 0.004 inch (0.10 mm) for a wire diameter of 0.091 to 0.120 inch (2.31
to 3.05 mm) and 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) for a wire diameter of 0.121 inch
(3.07 mm) and over.

4.8 Reel Design

4.8.1 Reel shall be of non-returnable wood. Standard reel sizes shall be used
unless otherwise specified by SEC.

4.8.2 Length of strand in reel may vary between the standard (nominal)
length and ten percent (10%) over the standard (nominal) length.

4.9 Markings

4.9.1 Each end of the galvanized guy wire strand in the package shall bear a
strong weather-resistant non-corroding tag identifying the following:

a. Grade of Guy Wire Strand
b. Size
c. Weight
d. Length of Guy Wire Strand
e. Stranding
f. Class of Coating
g. Number of joints in the coated wire

5.0 TESTS

All test results shall be provided for review and acceptance by SEC.

5.1 The galvanized guy wire strand shall be tested in accordance with ASTM
A475.

5.2 Tests for mechanical properties of component wires shall also be made before
stranding.

5.3 Tension test shall be made on the finished strand and the breaking strength
shall not be less than the minimum breaking strength specified in Section 4.3.

5.4 The zinc coated steel strands shall pass the preece test in accordance with the
latest edition of ASTM A 239.

5.5 The zinc-coated wire shall be capable of being wrapped at a rate not exceeding
15 turns/minute in a close helix of at least 2 turns around a cylindrical mandrel
equal to 3 times the nominal diameter of the wire under test, without fracture of
wire and cracking or flaking the zinc coating to such an extent that any zinc
can be removed by rubbing with bare fingers.

5.6 If on testing the sample from any drum/coil fails to conform to the
requirements of the specification two additional samples shall be taken from
the same drum and tested. Both these samlpes shall conform to the
requirements otherwise the drum shall be rejected. Samples shall then be taken
from all the drums offered for acceptance and tested. If the sample from any
drum does not meet the requirements, that drum shall be rejected. If the
number of drums rejected exceed 20% of the offered lot, the complete lot shall
be rejected.

6.0 PACKING AND SHIPPING

In addition to the packing and shipping requirements specified in 01-TMSS-01, the
following shall be fulfilled:

10-TMSS-02, Rev. 0 TRANSMISSION MATERIALS STANDARD SPECIFICATION

6.1 The guy wire strand shall be furnished on non-returnable wooden reels,
protected by wood lagging, or other suitable method, against damage during
shipment and to facilitate field handling and long-term outdoor storage.

6.2 The reels shall be sufficiently sturdy to withstand normal service incident to
shipping, hauling, and field erection.

6.3 The method of packing shall be strong enough to withstand wear and tear
during sea/inland transportation and handling at site.

6.4 Methods of packaging, marking and shipping shall be submitted to SEC for
review and acceptance.
