Module 18

Roadway Plan Production

In this module, you learn how to work with Roadway Plan Production tools in AutoCAD Civil 3D. The Plan Production tools are used to automate the generation of plan and profile design and construction sheets. Plan and profile design and construction sheets can be either generated in the working drawing, or in new drawings that seamlessly reference the data residing in the working drawing.

Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

Create view frames in a view frame group.

Create all plan and profile sheets in the current drawing.

Create all plan and profile sheets in a new drawing.

Create all plan and profile sheets in individual drawings.

Use the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager to manage the sheets.

Exercises

The following exercises are provided in step-by-step format. Open the AutoCAD Civil 3D program prior to beginning the lesson by double-clicking the Civil 3D icon on the desktop.

For those working in the imperial system use the drawing files beginning with the letter I. Those working in the metric system should use the drawing files beginning with the letter M. You are provided with a drawing for each exercise in the lesson.

You must use the drawings provided with the exercises.

The exercises in this module are as follows:

1. Create View Frames in a View Frame Group

2. Create All Sheets in the Current Drawing

3. Create All Sheets in a New Drawing

4. Create All Sheets in Individual Drawings

5. Use the AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager

8. How is Sheet Set Manager used?

9. When creating sheets, under what circumstances are external references and reference objects used?

Answers

1. An AutoCAD external reference is used to share AutoCAD graphical data between drawings. A Civil 3D reference object is used to share Civil 3D object data between drawings.

2. The view frame is the model space object that surrounds an area that is displayed when a sheet is created.

3. The match line is a line drawn in plan view that indicates the separation between adjacent sheets. The position of the match line is based on the length of profile alignment that fits in the viewport.

4. The viewport size and scale in the referenced layout in the drawing template (DWT) controls the size of the view frames.

5. View frames are organized in a view frame group. The view frame group is shown as a collection on the Prospector tab of the Toolspace window.

6. You can use grips to control the position of the view frames in model space. The green circle-shaped grip is used to rotate the view frame. The blue diamond grip is used to position the view frame along the alignment. The blue square grip is used to move the view frame to any position.

9. External references and reference objects are used when you create sheets in new drawings.

10. Civil 3D Plan Production tools cannot be used to create cross-section sheets. There are, however, other methods for producing cross-section sheets such as cross-section group plot styles and map books.

NOTES

Module Summary

In this module, you learned how to use the AutoCAD Civil 3D Plan Production tools to create plan and profile sheets.

The first step was to create the view frames, which show the plan view areas that are displayed in the individual sheets. The view frames were positioned and sized based on layout definitions residing in a drawing template file (DWT). After the view frames were created, you used grips to modify the position of the view frames.

The next step was to generate the sheets. First, sheets were generated with all layouts in the current drawing. Next, sheets were generated with all layouts in a new drawing, and then sheets were generated in individual drawings with one layout for each sheet.

Finally, you learned how to use AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager to manage the sheets within a sheet set.
