WIVES BEHIND THE BADGE BLOOD DRIVE

Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. had an opportunity to partner with a remarkable campaign in December - Below 100. This awareness campaign is focused on the decrease of law enforcement officer deaths. While 2013 ended just shy of the campaign goal, the year is marked as an historical one with line of duty deaths reaching the first all-time low since the 1950s. An important component to saving lives is blood donation and in conjunction with National Blood Donor Month in January, Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. has set a goal of 100 donors in each state through its Auxiliary programs. While just a drop in the bucket, this effort also brings awareness to an important part of the life-saving process. It is amazing that such a small gift can give someone another birthday, a walk with a loved one, a graduation, the birth of a child. One donor saves three lives.

Show us that your community cares by donating this month through one of our state auxiliary-hosted blood drives across the country during the month of January. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood; the process of giving takes ten minutes. Together, by reaching 100 donors, we can save a mother, father, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, sister or brother. We need your help! Contact your state auxiliary to find a location nearest you.

BRINGING AWARENESS TO BELOW 100

In an interview with Lauri Stevens of LAwS Communications, Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. President Tabitha Youngstrom discussed the importance of the Below 100 campaign and the role that Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. will be taking to help advocate for officer safety in the hopes of lowering the annual number of law enforcement deaths throughout the country.

Every person we reach through this campaign helps.

Lori - Your interest in Below 100 is rather obvious :-) but I'd like for you to comment on exactly what your organizational goal is by supporting it. Tabitha - Our goal in supporting Below 100 is to bring awareness to officer safety and LODD. Many people dehumanize officers, we know it is human nature not to like what is different or perceive authority as a dominating force to work against but these ARE our loved ones, our spouses, siblings, parents not a heartless creature with a badge. Accountants do not face daily turmoil or the danger our officers do when they clock in. I always think back to an incident my husband and his partner had one evening on shift. They were responding with Fire to an emergency call. They cleared road and intersection for the truck and while driving through with full lights and sirens a woman came within inches of T-boning them. They immediately pulled her over and she started to yell at them claiming they we not an emergency vehicle. It isn't just training our officers in safety, it is retraining the public. Lori - How do you plan to support it? Tabitha - We currently are planning several events throughout the year to bring more awareness to officer safety, our first started today with a month long blood drive nationwide through our auxiliaries. It isn't just reacting we need to be proactive and help in areas we can. One person giving blood can save 3 lives, we hope that the donors also take home more knowledge about officer safety and understanding that we all play a part in helping them come home safely from their shift. Lori - What affect do you think it is having on LODD? Tabitha - Every person we reach through this campaign helps. Each officer that leaves home that our members have reminded to buckle up, stay alert, and be safe makes a mark. Informing agencies that there is this fantastic tool at their call available to utilize to teach officer safety helps. We are like raindrops.. looking at us one by one may not look like much, but if you stand back and look again we are the flood. Lori - What else do you want me to know? Tabitha - I know that when officers are young (I'm a 21 year veteran wife and Operations Assistant II with the Sheriff's Department) they feel they are invincible, again human nature of the young to be bullet proof. lol We aren't, scary fact and hard to look at head on but true. Officer safety starts at home truly and it's there that we need to also educate. When an officer goes on shift and has had a bad day at home he takes that with him and thinks about that through shift, that is dangerous. We are thrilled to be able to partner with Mendi Keatts creator and instructor of P.O.L.I.C.E. Families Training. This course is taught by a husband and wife team to educate both on being stronger partners to each other and recognizing stressors.

RETIREMENT: ITS NEVER TOO LATE OR TOO EARLY TO PLAN.

TabithaYoungstrom
Even if youre close on your numbers you can still make an impact on how you retire, it is never too late to begin but you will need to knuckle down to make it a success. First and the most important, save, save, save! I am not talking a savings account attached to your checking account, we are talking a true savings account separate from all your accounts. Having an account separate from the others makes it more difficult to use that money today and save tomorrow. This is the hard part but if you set this up to automatically transfer the money over you will not feel the impact as hard. To honestly make a good egg you will need to set aside 20% of your monthly salary. Starting when you first hire makes this easier because you have not become accustom to using this money yet it may prove harder later but it can be done. If you are given the option have it put directly into your pension account or set it up with a safe stock account. You will be glad you did this. Have a n end date in place and stick with it. We have all seen the ones that linger, they seem to only live for the job and in many cases do not make it long enough into retirement to enjoy it. Dont be that person, enjoy your days off, get a hobby away from work, make friend outside of work, travel even if its just camping in your state. Check your Social Security often. As an LEO family you may not be set up to pay into the program but check your account. Medicare is also calculated on the site and healthcare may be the biggest expense your family will face during retirement. The Social Security Administration no longer mails annual statements, but you can review your expected future benefits by going to www.ssa.gov and creating an account. You should do that both to confirm that the SSA is correct about your earnings history, and also to see what amount youre likely to collect each month. Knowing that dollar figure is a key piece in understanding how much you need to save on your own. Knowing how much you need for retirement can get complicated. At minimum, run your numbers through an online calculator to see whether youre on track. Your retirement-plan provider probably offers a calculator, or try the Ballpark Estimate offered by ChooseToSave.org. But, when youre 50 or older, its time you created a written retirement plan, detailing where your income will come from, and how much money youre likely to spend in retirement. Retirement is not the Big Rock Candy Mountain of beer fountains and endless warm days, you need a plan.

Retirement planning starts in your 20s.

As the new year begins we may stop and ask ourselves, Do I have the points to go home? Retirement, what are our numbers? what do we need? how do I get there? and when were there now what? I remember back to when I hired on and how fortunate I was to have my family help me choose the best retirement plan offered to us and to drive home that retirement planning begins when you do. I look back and some things I truly took to heart and others I thought man that is too far off to think about but then I blinked and here we are five years away from that far off place. I wont bog you down terribly with too much information, retirement planning can be simple and you can work it in now so it become natural and before you know it youll have a beautiful nest egg.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Alright you have your savings, your medical, and the love of your life by your side and you are ready for this. This may be something you havent really thought of or maybe you envision you and your love growing old in the house you raised your kids. Where will we settle in retirement? In todays world this is something you really need to step back and take a close look at. Social Security has changed, our medical has changed, and in many cases our pensions have too. Is your location retirement friendly? There is no magical formula for this one folks and it takes really talking to your family, but now that the kids are grown and you are reaching the age to retire what about where? There are many things to consider when picking where you will enjoy retirement. 1. income taxes 2. sales tax 3. climate and geography 4. activities 5. healthcare. These are all extremely important things to keep in mind and you will need to list them as you and your family prioritize them. We started with our top priority and eliminated all the states that were not retirement friendly to us, in which the first one off our list was the state we currently reside in. As we continued down our list our area got smaller and smaller until we found where we felt would be the best fit for us financially and physically. If you are a hunter or gun collector you will need to take into account gun laws in the state you choose. Inheritance taxes are another item to consider while looking into each state. It is scary to look at such a big change later in life but we are looking at this as our opportunity to live, experience things we couldnt because we had the job in the morning, and most of all unplug and enjoy each other. There is a whole world out there, beautiful

states filled with friendly people. Youve spent years running, running to work, running to school, running to appointments and recitals, now its time to enjoy those vacation things you and your spouse love to do. I leave you with my favorite quote from a former Chief when asked what he thought about retirement his

answer, Its six Saturdays and a Sunday! I look forward to that long weekend coming.

10-8 WITH THE CHIEF

My husbands department has a ride along policy. This enables me to go on what I call Ride Along Date Night. In all actuality, it enables me the spouse of an officer to see his training first hand, sometimes even up close and personal, and in doing so, it has given me a greater appreciation for how well-trained he really is. There are many discussions that take place during these ride alongs. We have discussed everything from 10 codes to what we are going to buy the kids for Christmas. To say the least, every time I go out with him, it is a new learning experience for me. The more I learn, the more I understand the different things he deals with on the streets. It not only helps me as a LEOW, it helps me in my roles with WBTB to encourage and support other spouses. Especially those whose spouses departments may not have a ride along policy. This column is the insight and ramblings of Lahoma Police Chief Wife, and Shield Editor, Melisa Cross. All content is from personal perspective and not that of the Lahoma PD.

Into That Not So Silent Night

WINTER WEATHER RIDE ALONG ADVENTURE
To say that I dont like cold is an understatement. So, it wasnt my most brilliant idea to go out on a ride along when I knew that we were in for wintry weather. In my defense, the Ford Interceptor has a killer heater, I mean we are talking harnessed sun in a can, so I had no doubt that Id stay warm enough during our time out. What I should have been thinking of, was the fact that we were in store for ice on the roadways. I HATE adrenalin rushes. And this would be an evening of staying on heightened adrenalin overdose. The first couple of hours werent too bad. We sat running traffic, a light amount of precipitation coming down, but not freezing yet, seeing one equipment violation after the other. We spent some time playing the radar game. For those who have never played this game, as an approaching car is coming down the road, you try to guess the speed of the vehicle before hitting the button on the radar to confirm the speed. Ill be straight up honest. I am horrible at this game. I am never even remotely close to being correct. (Except maybe once.) What looks like at least 45-50 is usually only 31. This has made me realize all of these times that Ive told my husband You should have been running traffic at such and such location because people were flying through there was probably a misconception on my part as they were more than likely a good 10 under what I thought they were doing. And as often as we have played this game, you would think Id be better at it. I mean, we are talking a good 2-3 years off and on, but NOPE. This is not my game to win. As the rain came down, and the temperatures began to drop, the ice started to really begin to accumulate. More so on the bridges and windshield wipers than the actual roadway, and that was when the call came in. We were sitting talking to 722, when the phone rang and the report of a rollover accident just outside the city limits. This was when the adrenalin party jumped into full gear. As the LEDs light up the night time sky, and the car went into code 3, we discovered just how slick those brides really were when we crossed. Thankfully, my husband, being a very skilled driver and LEDT instructor, had zero issues and called out to the other responding units about the conditions. Continued on page 5

During wintery weather, always slow down over bridges and overpasses. They do freeze first, they do become slick and hazardous and you can lose all control before you know it.

THE FAMILY CONNECTION

Lahoma PD Police Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross joined the Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. team in November of 2013 as the Families Behind the Badge program director. Believing in the mission of Wives Behind the Badge after being involved with his wife Melisa, he chose to get more involved and show that officer-involvement is just as important as spousal involvement.

WINTER WEATHER RIDE ALONG ADVENTURE CONTINUED

Upon arriving on the scene, there were numerous vehicles parked on the shoulder, in the hopes of being able to offer some sort of assistance. This is where I have to break into my public service announcement voice: While Im sure that it is appreciated that people wish to help in this sort of a situation, it is hazardous to block the side of the road with personal vehicles when emergency crews are trying to get onto the scene. As we were trying to get pulled off the roadway, we slid due to the ice more than once and were lucky that we did not strike another vehicle of a civilian. So please, if you ever find yourself pulling off the roadway to call in an accident, make sure that you leave room for emergency crews to have immediate access to the vehicle (s) involved so that you do not unintentionally hinder the rescue process. Thankfully, the driver of the vehicle was uninjured, and due to numerous other accidents taking place throughout the county, we transported the gentlemen home. The road conditions only continued to get worse, and while we were en route, the windshield wiper blades kept icing over. What I took home with me from this adventure is a peace of mind that the training my husband received during his time in the academy, and the extra training and course time from LEDT instructor training, has equipped him to handle extreme road conditions and situations. Does this mean that he is exempt from anything happening to him on the roads? On the contrary. Anything can happen at any time and he is just as at risk as the next officer. It does mean that I, as his wife, know that after having been in that car with him that he is massively well- trained and that I know he does not take one minute behind the wheel for granted. TESTIMONIALS
We are pleased to share testimonies from one of our forums members who tell us their story about how they came to join the Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. forums and what this special sisterhood means to them. This months testimony is from Brooke (Cpl.Wife.225) who has been a member of the forums since May 2013.

I found Wives Behind the Badge through an internet search. I wanted to find a place where I could talk to somebody that would be able to relate to me being a LEO wife and what all we go through. I have been a LEO wife for almost 13 years. At the time, my husband had been through some pretty gruesome crimes and I wanted to be able to be there for him more than I already was. I wanted to be prepared for any time that he wanted to confide in me more than he already did. That is why I am so thankful for the forums that we have through Wives Behind the Badge! I met other women who had been through what I was going through and could give me suggestions on what to do and not to do. I dont think a LEO wife realizes what all she goes through and how much her life is based upon how her husbands day goes. I do know that unless you are a LEO wife, then you really cant relate to what we are thinking. It felt so good to be able to talk freely about issues that I was having without being judged or somebody just telling me that it would get better, when they had absolutely no clue what I was going through. Through the forums, I have built friendships that will last a lifetime. I know that if I have any kind of question, concern, need advice, or just need to vent that I have a place to go to where it is all welcome and will have the support that a LEO wife needs to be the best for her husband that she can. Brooke is the auxiliary director for Louisiana, western auxiliary assistant and volunteer manager.

JANUARY 23RD IS NATIONAL PIE DAY

MAPLE CREAM PIE SUBMITTED BY SBRAVO

3/4 cup of maple syrup 1/2 cup of maple sugar 4 egg yolks 2 cups of half and half 1/3 cup of corn starch 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 Tablespoon butter *Remove from heat, add butter and pour into a 9 inch baked pie shell. Cool, top with whipped cream.

National Pie Day was created by the American Pie Council. In honor of this sweet day, we are sharing two pie recipes provided by a couple of our forums members. These recipes, along with numerous others, can be found in the Non- Verified Recipes section of our forums.

Whisk together the first 6 ingredients in a heavy saucepan bring mixture to a boil, whisking constantly boil for one minute or until thickened.

TRANSPARENT PIE SUBMITTED BY WANDERLUCK

Ingredients: 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 2 cups sugar 1 cup cream 4 eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 unbaked (9-inch) pie shell Directions: Beat butter and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add cream, and mix well. Beat in eggs. Stir in flour and vanilla. Pour into pie shell. Bake at 375 for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown. *Keep an eye on it - it WILL puff and look like a disaster waiting to happen, but deflates fast after you take it out. *This recipe usually makes about a cup too much filling, so I prepare a couple of ramekins or another ~10 oz dish. Works great with any crust or crumble!

FAMILIES BEHIND THE BADGE

Families Behind the Badge is a program that is designed for the extended family members of law enforcement officers. FBTB is the place where all family members are welcome to draw support, including a forum designed specifically for families. In the Fall of 2013, Police Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross stepped into the role of director of the program to bring a fresh perspective on offering support to the family unit.

You mean theres news in the newspaper?! I just get it for the free coupons. You can have the rest. EXTREME COUPONING
BY MELISA CROSS
I will admit it. Im not one who has really ever used coupons. But like most LE families, the money issue does come into play, especially when you have 4 boys, one of them in college. As boys grow, so does the price tag attached to the types of toys they like. So saving money in any way possible has become very attractive, and I find myself willing to learn how to coupon effectively. The first step Ive taken in this endeavor has been internet research. There are multiple web pages dedicated to extreme couponing, and the one that really caught my eye is Couponing 101. There is a plethora of information on this site that lines out the process and organization of how to coupon and the benefits, as well as deals, articles and printable coupons. While I have yet to devour everything this site has to offer, it has me intrigued enough to want to head down to the quick stop this Sunday and get a paper, with its coupons all glossy and bright tucked inside. I will be giving this money saving endeavor a go as an experiment to see exactly how much I can save in a month by using coupons. If my grocery bill takes a trimming, I may just take up couponing for good. Three teenage boys all living at home and all three of them with hollow leg syndrome, is a hard hit on the pocket book in the food department. The resources are there, now comes the dedication and organization. Lets see how much we can tuck away in a month. http://www.thefrugalette.com/10-stepcouponing/

MELISA CROSS

Melisa Cross is the wife of Chief Lloyd (Butch) Cross, the Families Behind the Badge Director and together they raise 4 boys ages 20, 17, 17, and 14. (You guessed it...twins). The family unit, being very important to Melisa and Butch drove them to become facilitators of the P.O.L.I.C.E. Families class, written by WBTB Chaplain and Board Member Mendi Keatts, and designed to help solidify the support system for law enforcement agents nationwide. Having been married for 21 years, adventuring through all walks of life ranging from the military to EMS before finding law enforcement, Melisa and Butch have discovered that through thick and thin, no matter what, the family is worth the fight.

All to often it seems as if the money we work so hard to earn slips away from us faster than we ca earn it.

CREATING A PERSONAL BUDGET

BY MELISA CROSS
Every month you work hard to provide hard for your family. Most law enforcement families are two-income families, working together to maintain a financial balance in the home. One of the greatest tools that can dramatically and effectively help any family, is that of a household budget. To track and know exactly the funds coming in as compared to what is going out, empowers us to make the proper financial choices for our families. Many excuses are used to not create a budget. Im not good with numbers, I dont have the time to mess with it and so on. But if we are honest with ourselves, are these real reasons, or simply excuses that we use because we are too afraid to assess our finances and see where they really are? By utilizing a budget, we can see how much of our income essentially becomes like sand in an hourglass, which slips quickly away. If you have a computer, you have instant access to everything you need to create a budget. Fancy financial software is not needed. Just a spreadsheet program and some easy reference steps that can simply be Googled to show the way. Budget reference guides can be found at: http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Household-Budget http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/money101/lesson2/ http://christianpf.com/10-free-household-budget-spreadsheets/ Taking the time to create a household budget will help you know exactly where your funds are going and how much you have tucked away into birthday and holiday funds. It will help you to know if you have extra to move into your savings for that vacation you ve been wanting to take. Managing a budget will lead to more financial freedom as you will no longer fear not knowing if you do or dont have enough to cover a purchase. When making your New Years resolutions this year, include budgeting into the list. Take control of your financial freedom in 2014.

BLUE LINE KIDS

When Families Behind the Badge was created in the spring of 2011, Wives Behind the Badge wanted to also create a safe and fun environment for the children of law enforcement officers. We wanted a place, a forums section on the Wives Behind the Badge forums, for kids ages 9 to 17, where they could safely gather to meet other kids living the same lives they live, as police kids. After much thought and consideration, Blue Line Kids was born. Blue Line Kids is not only a forum, but also a program centered around the lives of police kids. Through our forums and local events, we hope to create a fun, educational, and supportive group where our kids feel comfortable and welcome and find lasting friendships.

Its the holiday season, so what does Wives Behind the Badge, Inc.s West Virginia Auxiliary do? Well, have a party of course! Director Jan Miller spearheaded the second annual Blue Line Kids Christmas Party on December 07, 2013. This year the West Virginia State Police Academy was generous enough to host the event, welcoming all of our Blue Line Kids and their families to come share in the spirit of the holidays. Miller was very thankful that the State Police Academy opened their doors and encouraged the backbone support of Wives Behind the Badge. The venue was full to capacity with 25 kids, plus their families and the volunteers. They had food donated from a local generous vendor and coordinated games for all ages. A big hit this year was their ring toss station. Heroes for Higher character

Batman and Batgirl were in attendance signing pictures and handing out bracelets, and Santa even showed up too. Children in attendance were encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal for the Heroes for Higher hospital program to be donated to the hospital.

Blue Line Kids is a national program under the direction of Director Kathy Everman. Working with forums staff and the Auxiliary Program, providing online and hands on activities for the children of law enforcement officers.
Heroes 4 Higher are dedicated to West Virginias Little Heroes and inspire us all to be the hero

Heroes for Higher is a local West Virginia group of performers who dress up to teach our little heroes about being a leader in the community, and inspiring children to respect authority. At this year s Christmas party, Batman did an anti-bullying presentation. I discovered John [Batman] at a friends kids birthday party in 2012. He came to our first BLK Christmas Party and thats how he got started with us, Miller said. As well as their annual Christmas parties, Batman and Captain America have been big hits at all kinds of Wives Behind the Badge West Virginia Auxiliary events, such as the 2013 Heroes & Handcuffs Baseball Game and the 2013 Pig Roast. WBTB-West Virginia Auxiliary will be participating in more upcoming events, including a blood drive in support of the Below 100 campaign and National Police Week in May. SR. DEPUTY MARCUS GREEN OF CADDO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE IN LOUISIANA

On October 15, 2013 Sr. Deputy Marcus Green of Caddo County Sheriffs Office in Louisiana was recognized for his courageous actions while on duty during a particular call in July, by being awarded the Distinguished Action Medal.
Deputy Green responded to a call where smoke was reported coming out of a building. When he pulled up, there were visible flames emanating from the house. An on-looker reported the neighbor had entered the building in search of a cat. Without hesitation, Deputy Green ran into the house to find the man.

Caddo County Sheriffs press release reported: As the smoke began to intensify, Deputy Green found it increasingly difficult to see or breathe; however, he continued his search until he finally located the man, choking and coughing, on the east side of the residence. Though the man initially refused to leave without the pet, Deputy Green persuaded him to exit the residence, saving the citizen from serious injury.
Thank you Sr. Deputy Marcus Caddo for your selfless reaction and exceptional bravery.

MEET THE CARLS

Deputy Carl was in law enforcement for approximately eight years before the opportunity opened up to fill the role as the next K9 Officer for Hardin County Sheriffs Office. Deputy Carl was a part of the Special Response Team (S.R.T.) already, so their family already had a taste of being on call 24/7. The training as a regular police officer is time consuming with things like qualifying at the range and seminars, but throw in there S.R.T. training AND K-9 demonstrations, on top of regular shifts, and that is one busy police officer. With a husband being so active, Cara Carl looked to Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. and all of the great programs we have to offer. Cara has been a part of the Ohio auxiliary for a year and has recently filled the role as assistant director. My favorite thing about being a part of Wives Behind the Badge is the [private] forums, Cara said. It's great having such a diverse group of women from all across the country to lean on and support each other.

When asked what advice Deputy Carl would share with aspiring K9 officers, he recommends talking to the current handlers before taking the plunge so they understand commitment and extra work and time involved with taking on the responsibility. The bond that develops between the handler and K9 is amazing, Deputy Carl said. Although it is time consuming, the Carls cannot imagine life today without being a K9 family and are honored to be a part of such an amazing law enforcement family . If I lived in Ohio, I would definitely want to be neighbors with the very talented Deputy Carl and his incredibly supportive family.

An officer laid down a costly sacrifice on the altar of justice; the streets are a little darker today. No longer will briefing shake with their laughter at the jokes shared and no longer will their joy boom in the corridor. Our hearts are heavy and the shield and star shines less brightly as we say farewell to one who gave all.
No longer shall the lion roar.
