Welcome to our rst anniversary celebrations, we are delighted that you could join us. The focal point of the evening is an exhibition by the rst year ne art students from UCLAN. All the pieces that are catalogued here have been created especially for our event. We have all been very impressed by the quality of the work and we are sure you will be too. All the pieces are available to purchase and most of the artists are here at the exhibition to discuss their work in more detail. FIRST ANNIVERSARY FINE ART EXHIBITION

I have always been interested in art from being a child. Money was short in our family so you had to make the best of what you got. I would get creative with food boxes left over from mums weekly food order and make dolls houses out of them. Sitting on the curb outside our house I would make sculptures out of the silt in the road. Art was the only subject area that held any interest for me in school, so I excelled in my studies and have maintained an active interest in art as a hobby since I left school. I am a member of the local art group where I live and have recently joined the Fine Art Society at the University of Central Lancashire through my studentship on the BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art. Art, to me, is a way of life, being creative and imaginative is the very essence of me, its in my heart and soul and I feel very lucky to be given the opportunity of gaining my degree at this late stage in my life, I am enjoying it all very much.

My artwork is currently in a developmental stage, I am experimenting with a range of different mediums and techniques to determine the kind of art I want to make and themes I want to work around. Aesthetic properties of the materials I am experimenting with is very important to me and also the impact of 2D & 3D work on the viewer. I am enjoying the skills I am gaining through the facilities available to me on the Fine Art Degree course at the University of Central Lancashire, and am nding working with the different materials challenging and fun. My preferred processes so far have been 3D sculpture, life casting and experimenting with epoxy resin which I have used to create the artwork I have chosen to exhibit.

I have currently only exhibited my artwork at the University of Central Lancashires foundation art and design end of year exhibition and created work for friends, family and my studies. In the future I aim to be involved in more exhibitions and commissions and gain work in the art industry in more of a professional role. FIRST ANNIVERSARY FINE ART EXHIBITION

In the last two years, the focus of my works has varied greatly. A year prior to joining the degree course at UCLAN. I was focusing my attention on high detail, large scale portraiture. Having always had a particular passion for drawing in any medium, I have gained extensive experience with numerous mediums and tools including numerous kinds of pen and pencil, paint and some slightly more unorthodox sources such as DIY/ Industrial tools and materials. More recently I have dramatically changed my focus from more traditional subject matter to exploring the idea and science of structural evolution/decay and its effect/potential effects. Additionally, this has precipitated me to explore the reactionary nature of materials and medium, new and old, to not only each other but to different natural and human processes. With my continued study on degree I intend to continue my research and artistic output on such subject and wherever they take me to. Once I complete my studies on degree, I intend to continue working as a commercial artist, perhaps with the idea of working on artistic production for the entertainment industry. I may possibly decide to take on a Masters Degree course in the future, depending on where my work takes me professionally.

Art has always been a hobby for me. I always enjoyed drawing and doodling from a very young age, and have always been inspired by the notion that from a simple act of making marks and lines on paper or canvas you can produce the most amazing and interesting shapes and forms my exhibition piece is a strong example of this.

Since starting my BA(Hons) Fine Art degree at the University of Central Lancashire, my main focus has been printmaking. I enjoy the process and the way in which it allows me to manipulate colour and ow of media. The natural landscape has always been a source of inspiration for me, I use a variety of printmaking techniques to reect the changing colour, texture, form and structure of our local environment. This is the rst exhibition that I am in that isnt tutor lead. My previous works have been a bit mixed up in terms of subject matter. Being only 20 years old, I am just coming into my own style. A recent project at university is how I started this style and I would like to carry on developing it further. My inspiration came from Paul Morrison when I visited his exhibition in Manchester. He is known mostly for his black and white, bold pictures. His large stylized imagery is what I liked most and the chance to play around with colour. The rst piece I created in this style was on a wall. I used photography, computer techniques, silk screen printing and an overhead projector to create the large scale image, then wall and acrylic paint to

complete it. The piece is a personal message about Love. This was a big achievement for me as it was very ambitious but I wanted to create more work I can sell, as that is where Im aiming in life, to sell my artwork. As soon as people saw my wall painting I had demand for canvases of all kinds of sizes and all kinds of colours. Previous to my degree I concentrated on textiles but grew more to love painting. I have various types of work from painting to installation art. My paintings use predominantly acrylic on canvas, often combined with inks, watercolours, pastels and collage. Recent work has been inspired by interiors representing cultural and social interaction. After study, I would like to travel for inspiration for my work, and then hopefully become a working artist with a studio. Ive sold a number of pieces of work some being via internet and others being friends of family. After my degree I would love to carry on a career in one of my many areas of work.

Matt Birchall: From Euxton, Chorley, Lancashire. Ive painted all my life working both as a self employed artist working on album covers or designing logos for companies, and also taking commissioned work. My paintings are largely based on people, faces and gures but can vary from collage to abstract works. I wish to complete my degree in the hope of continuing outside university as a working artist, drinking wine or port in the sun. Emma Louise Chadwick: From Leyland, Preston, Lancashire. I am a painter and illustrator and also use various materials in my work such as wool and fabric. In my work I like to make surreal and abstract landscapes, using texture and collage to create different emotions. I also have started creating strange and weird creatures that t perfectly along side my landscapes. My goals for after university will hopefully take me onto working with children through art, and hopefully one day setting my own business up. I have always been interested in art and have painted as a hobby for a number of years. In 2005 I completed my rst private commission for a client based near Seattle in the USA, this gave me the inspiration I needed to decide to become a commercial artist. My early work focused around the traditional practice of painting on canvas using oil paints. I would study people and places and make portrait paintings and landscapes from photos I had taken. In November 2006 I began showing with a local gallery; Ascot Studios in Ribchester and took up the position as Resident Artist in their studio space. From there I continued making private sales and participating in exhibitions. In September 2007 I quit my full time engineering career and enrolled on the BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree at the University of Central Lancashire. I have just completed the rst year of study, producing sculptures and experimenting with materials tile adhesives, plaster, silicon sealant etc. From this I have developed a keen interest in producing work

that has more texture, depth and structure than my earlier pieces. I have also employed more non-traditional tools - toothbrushes, nail brushes, sponges etc. to add thickness to my more traditional style paintings. The two artworks I have chosen to exhibit reect the progression from my early, more traditional paintings to the more sculptural, experimental work I have been producing. At the beginning of my degree course my work was more traditional, focusing on seascapes using watercolour and acrylic on canvas. More recently however, I have veered to a more contemporary style and have switched to the human gure as my subject. I use mixed media such as pen and watercolour, poster paint and acrylic, and dyes on fabric combined with acrylic using a non-traditional range of tools such as sponges, bottles, plastic sticks and a plastic ball to create and explore different textures and marks. The artists who have inuenced me are fashion illustrator David Downtown, Cindy Sherman and Heather Gatt. On completion of my course I would like to become a full time commercial artist.

The piece I have chosen for exhibition is one of my more traditional works of the Lighthouse at Holyhead. I wanted to capture the texture on the rocks and the waves breaking on them against sky darkening above, signalling a storm brewing. As a young contemporary artist, I am interested in painting and the portrayal of imagery through the medium of paint. I am interested in the themes of paintings right through to the application and execution. I create paintings that centralise around current themes in society: the paintings oscillate between abstraction, narration, guration, surrealism and touches of grafti. My work originates via large numbers of studies in sketchbooks etc, in which ideas are culminated and formatted into creating larger more rened paintings. I want the paintings to essentially lie between abstraction and guration, the usual abstract setting creating ominous, surreal and sinister viewing, with the introduction of an overlaying isolated gure. The paintings play off as little social commentaries, some more obvious than others. Each carries connotations of popular culture, some of allegorical memory, some from news articles and others from imagination. After a period in Germany I feel my paintings became more urbanised, played on the themes of isolation more-so than before with numbers of gures becoming involved. Grafti also plays a part in my work with the inclusion of text in some pieces. This visit to Germany had an impact upon my paintings; paintings became darker and deeper with the induction of an urban landscape in the forms of deterred garages and shop windows with the isolated muted guration at the forefront.

Control is an important feature in my work, I am interested in creating pieces that are multi layered with paint with a range of mark making, from the uncontrolled drips right through to the controlled contrived application of paint. When painting I seek inuence from a range of painters: Daniel Richter is a big inuence due to his rich use of colour, vast guration and the apparent use of popular culture as a theme to work with. Peter Doig is inuential due to his use of magical realism that makes his paintings seem so appealing, his fantastic painterly quality and multi layering use of paint. Jorg Immendorf is another artist who I seek inspiration from, his paintings play off as surreal images with deep underlying political messages, including negative use of gure in which I have often conveyed in my work. I have always had a strong interest in the subject of environment and the notion of a sense of place. I want to explore and illustrate these themes through my artwork. Forgotten and abandoned spaces hold a particular fascination for me and when visiting specic sites I will make sketches and take photographs to work from, capturing the ambience of the environment I have placed myself in. The ideas and images recorded in my sketches and photographs allow me to bring the beauty of such places to the gaze of the viewer through the nal piece. My work is often highly textured due to the range of non-traditional media used and the methods of

application I employ, anything from painting on emulsion to using a trowel for applying cement based materials. I want to make people reach out and touch the work, not just because of the weird and wonderful surface textures presented to them but because I feel it breaks down any divide between artwork and viewer. After studying art at Preston College when I was younger I took time out to go into full time work. Several years and numerous jobs later I decided I wanted to pursue my art interests more seriously and in September 2008 I enrolled on the BA(Hons) Degree in Fine Art at University of Central Lancashire with the intention of a professional career as a commercial artist; and art tutor, when I qualify. The style of my work ranges from abstract to representational, a blend of gurative themes and abstraction with good drawing skills. I choose my subject matter from everyday people and places and I like to work from photographs or sketches taken directly from visits to specic sites. My years in the workplace highlighted the drudgery and routine of everyday working life for me, and as a result this is a

theme that features strongly in my artwork. I enjoy exploiting the material qualities of paint and trying to challenge the viewers perceptions of traditional painterly technique. The piece on show in this exhibition outlines some of these painting practices and techniques. I have successfully completed numerous commissions for the public sector and have gained experience in the eld of illustration through my previous work. Art has always been a hobby for me but since I started studying for my degree at University of Central Lancashire I have put the wheels in motion for changing a hobby I am very passionate about into a full time career as a commercial artist. My art is still very much in a developmental stage, I am currently exploring materials and other artists work to nd inspiration and to determine the context of my own artwork within the world of contemporary art today. Painting is currently my main focus. I have become very interested in the following artists: Richard Prince, Daniel Richter, Peter Doig and Marlene Dumas. My exhibition piece is strongly inspired by the work of Marlene Dumas.

My goals and ambitions are to devote my time fully to painting and art in general, hopefully becoming a full time professional artist working from my own studio. Before starting my degree most of my work was drawing based, working directly from everyday natural forms and producing portraits. I used a range of materials during this time, producing works from more well known mediums such as graphite, pencils, acrylic and watercolour paints to non-conventional things like chicken wire and mod-roc. Since starting at University of Central Lancashire in September 2008 I have concentrated more on the human gure, which I particularly enjoy doing. The paintings I have done this year have been produced using acrylic and spray paint, these have been my favourite of all the materials I have experimented with. The painting I have chosen for exhibition is an example of the style I have adopted using these mediums.

While studying for my degree my work has moved towards black and white and colour photography, although traditional portraiture and gurative painting are a medium I still prefer, taking my inspiration from artists such as Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger, Salvador Dali and Kathe Kollwitz to name but a few. I have exhibited work at Park School and have undertaken a few private commissions, mainly for friends and family.

Before starting my degree I chose to do a foundation diploma to allow me to gain experience within a lot of elds which then allowed me to specialise. By doing so my love of stitching and paint arose, not always by using thread but sometimes metal and shing wire, something used by many artists such as Ghada Amer and Michael Raedecker therefore artists whom inuence me a great deal. This is noticable within my exhibition piece. After my degree I aim to work towards a teaching degree whist attempting to sell my art on the side. I am also secretary in the University of Central Lancashire Fine Arts Society.

I have been painting for two years on and off. I have sold a number of paintings privately and also in various exhibitions set up in the local community. My main inuences are the Impressionists such as Degas, Renoir and Van Gogh. However, I am also a keen draughtsman and am inspired by Escher and Leonardo da Vinci. The painting in this exhibition is an exploration of shape and colour and also the suggestion of image.

My method of working always includes preliminary sketches of the nal piece in my sketchbook, these sketches may change and be re-worked several times over before the nal transition onto canvas using oil paints. Hello viewers and prospective clients; an introduction to my pieces. My work exists generally as a hobby; I am an artist because its what I love. The work I do in education is thoroughly constructed and brought about by concepts, themes and development the rst piece that I have entered into this exhibition is one of ve nal products of these very processes. It is an exploration of the urban environment and urban degradation, most of the pieces including this one, focus on discarded and dumped objects. I was inuenced by many artists during this project; however one artist I am particularly interested in is Francis Bacon, of whom I have followed the work of for well over ve years now. His work is certainly abstract, but dont get fooled, my work has never been! The piece you see is in fact an expressionist piece, I havent actually abstracted anything, merely worked on a small scale with a large brush, working from a black and white photo creating the colour from my own thought on the differentiating tones. It is an oil piece, gloss varnished on hardboard. The second piece I have entered into this exhibition is a piece I have done outside of education, purely for the love of art itself. It is not conceptual like my work done in education; it is merely an expressive, strong toned portrait medley of me in the middle,

and my friends David to the left, and Luke to the right. The expressions are meant to be something of a questioning nature, to compel the viewer into a concept, instead of me advertising one this is art and does not have to answer, only create questions for the viewer to create the answers themselves; if I have done that, my concept is passively created on its own. This one is painted in acrylic on a heavy paper used for wallpapering usually, with a gloss varnish specic for acrylic, unlike the oil varnish I used for my rst piece entered this helps to accentuate the details and protects the piece and its surface. I am 44 years of age and for as long as I can remember I have sketched and painted, teaching myself along the way. I have always been absolutely passionate about art. I have worked as a Freelance Artist/Illustrator all of my adult life, even whilst pursuing other careers. My last commission was to paint a mural in a new sweet shop over two walls with a memory lane feel to it. Ive recently been asked to paint a mural, with the help of school children, for the new Pets Corner building in Astley Park, Chorley, this will have updates regularly in The Chorley Gaurdian. Other commissions have been portraits, animals, houses, and owers.

My work covers a wide range of subjects and different mediums. Some of my work is exhibited in local shops, Huntleys, and Wayfarers Arcade, Southport. Two years ago I designed a range of Christmas Cards and Birthday Cards, I have also illustrated a childrens book. I hope to teach Art in the future, as well as being a Professional Artist.
