2 kW DFIG LABORATORY KIT, MODEL 8013-A, with optional equipment by OPAL-RT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Lab-Volt has created a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator training kit as an extension of its popular 2- kW EMS product line. This kit is design for customers that are interested in further experimentation with doubly-fed induction generators used in wind turbines. This kit includes the new Four-Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540, which can be interfaced easily with a computer in order to emulate wind blowing on a wind turbine rotor (Wind Emulator). The generator used in the kit is a special version of our existing Wound-Rotor Induction Generator. This special version has a rotor voltage of 624 V (line-to-line). The kit also includes two IGBT Chopper/Inverter, Model 8857-1, to convert energy in both directions with a Line Inductors, Model 8374-A. Finally, a Three-Phase Power Supply, Model 8525-2, is used for connection to a standard three-phase network. Each of these modules is described in more detail in the following pages of this document. This laboratory kit DOES NOT include the DFIG controller. Lab-Volt is providing this kit as a hardware solution only and the controller must be provided by the customer. The 2 kW DFIG Laboratory Kit has already been integrated with success with OPAL-RTs OP5600/8660 Real-Time HIL Controller and Data Acquisition System. Model 8311 Resistive Load

Model 8505-A0 Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor

The Resistive Load, Model 8311, is equipped with 9 wire-wound power resistors. Each resistor is identified by a schematic symbol, the resistance value, as well as the current that will flow through it when connected to a nominal voltage power source. Each resistor is within 5% tolerance of the stated resistance value. Model 8374-A0 Line Inductors

The Line Inductors is a set of three inductors used to filter the power out of the IGBT Chopper/Inverter to the AC network.

The Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a 4-pole machine rated at 2 kW. Each phase of the stator winding is accessible via the connection module to allow wye or delta connections. The rotor is wye connected to four slip rings to give access to all windings, including neutral. The winding dimensions permit the study of operation as a wound-rotor induction motor, a frequency converter, a phase-shifter, a position controller, a variable-coupling single-phase transformer, a three-phase transformer, and an asynchronous induction generator. The machine also has three search coils permitting observation of the flux distribution at one pole of the stator, at one tooth, and at the full-pitch of the rotor.

2 kW DFIG LABORATORY KIT MODEL 8013-A

Model 8506-A0 Wiring Module for Wound-Rotor Induction Motor with a 5-prong, twist-lock plug and line cap, feeds the module. A mechanical interlock on the line cap prevents the removal of an energized Power Supply from its locked position in the workstation. The Power Supply requires a 3-phase, wye-connected, 5-wire service installation. An appropriate wall outlet is shipped with each Power Supply so that site power can be properly terminated to receive the power cord. In addition to the 3-phase legs and the neutral, a separate copper ground provides proper grounding for the Power Supply chassis and workstation cabinets, thus ensuring added safety for students using the equipment. The Power Supply provides fixed and variable AC and DC voltage sources all terminated with 4-mm safety jacks. They can be used simultaneously, up to a total load current equal to the rating of the fixed 3-phase output. Independent circuit breakers, reset at the front panel, protect the Power Supply input and outputs. Indicator lamps monitor the presence of input voltage in each phase. When a phase leg of the site power service is out, the lamp goes off to reflect this condition. A voltmeter, connected through a selector switch, monitors the outputs. Model 8540 Four-Quadrant Dynamometer

The Wiring Module for Wound-Rotor Induction Motor consists of a connection module. It provides connection access to the Three-Phase Wound-Rotor Induction Motor from the workstation through a flexible connecting cable. The module has ten 4-mm color-coded safety jacks for the power windings and six 2-mm jacks for the search coils. Jacks of different sizes prevent accidental connections between power windings and search coils. Model 8525-20 Power Supply

The Power Supply module is the primary component of the system. All associated equipment is powered by this power supply. A flexible, 5-wire power cord, terminated

The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540, is a new model which can be integrated to the Lab-Volt 2-kW Electromechanical Training System, Model 8013. This model can act as a prime mover or as a dynamometer, depending on user preference, and it can easily be coupled to any motor and generator from the Lab-Volt 2kW product line. The Four-Quadrant Dynamometer consists of a squirrel cage induction motor with an encoder feedback. The motor is driven by a closed-loop vector drive which is coupled to a touch-screen HMI (Human-Machine Interface). This interface enables the user to select the mode of operation (Speed or Torque mode) and to set either the speed (rpm) and direction or the output torque (Nm or lbft). The interface displays the main parameters of operation in real-time (Voltage, Current, Torque, Speed, Frequency).

Electrical connections between the vector drive and the motor are made through jumpers on the front panel. This makes the separation of both components simple and allows the motor or the vector drive to be used independently in other experimentations. The vector drive is well protected against abuse. The vector drive will stop if a problem occurs and the LCD will show the current alarm along with its description. The user is then able to reset the alarm and resume normal operation. The model can also be interfaced with a computer for monitoring and control. Model 8857-10 IGBT Chopper/Inverter

Model 8895-00 Three-Phase Splitter

The Three-Phase Splitter, Model 8895, is required when users need to connect their own equipment in addition to the Four Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540 at a workstation equipped with only one three phase wall outlet. Model 88362 PC Communication Cable

The IGBT Chopper/Inverter, Model 8857-1, consists of 7 insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) mounted in a half-size EMS module. Six IGBTs are used to implement choppers and inverters. These IGBTs are protected against a variety of severe operating conditions, such as short-circuits, overvoltage, overcurrent, and overheat. The seventh IGBT and an external dumping resistor allow smooth dissipation of excess energy at the DC bus. The dumping circuit can be activated through the use of a toggle switch on the front panel. The module switching control section allows 0/5 V pulse signals from either the Data Acquisition and Control Interface, Model 9063, the Chopper/Inverter Control Unit, Model 9029, or any compatible 0/5 V control unit, to be applied to the gating circuits of the IGBTs. The signals are input in the IGBT Chopper/Inverter module through a 9 pin connector. Six miniature banana jacks are used as test points to monitor the pulse signals using an oscilloscope. These jacks can also be used to inject 0/5 V pulse signals from an alternate control unit, as well as to inhibit each gating circuit. The IGBT Chopper/Inverter module also includes a synchronization output to trigger an oscilloscope when observing the switching control signals as well as a switching control disable input that allows all six IGBTs in the chopper/inverter section to be switched off.

The PC Communication Cable, Model 88362, permits the user to connect the Four-Quadrant Dynamometer, Model 8540, to a computer serial port (or a standard USB-to-Serial converter can be used with it). This will enable the user to monitor and control the Four-Quadrant Dynamometer with the demonstration application included in the model DVD-ROM or any custom application.
