Not Know?

Since I became editor of the Caribbean
Messenger, I am more exposed to criti-
cisms and words of
exhortation. I am
in a position to
communicate with
many people. I get
letters from many
people, and some
said to be mem-
bers of the Church
of Christ, but after
long conversation, I discovered that they
are not members of the Lord’s church, but
member of the denomination called the
“International Church of Christ.” To my dis-
may, I am surprised to see so many mem-
bers of this group all over the world and do
not know that they are not in the Lord’s
church, but a denomination. Apparently,
after the downfall of the Boston Movement
Church, many followers adjacent them-
selves with the Lord’s church without we
being able to identify them as goats in
sheep clothing with a doctrine totally differ-
ent from that of the New Testament church.
As of to this day, we have affluent and
impressive speakers from the Boston
Movement among us, some of whom we
cannot identify, but we look upon them as
great orators, good leaders and faithful
members yet every chance they get, they
sow their ideologies of man-made doctrine
among God’s flock. Some of these princi-
ples are so enticing that if we are not root-
ed and settled in the doctrine of Christ and
his apostles, we will accept these seeds of
contempts as the word of God. Many con-
gregations of the Lord’s church around the
world, such as the USA, Canada, England
your congregation returning home from col-
leges and universities with many ideas for-
eign to New Testament teaching. These
Christian groups are set up on campuses
all around the world enticing members of
the Lord’s church to join them. We have
identifiable groups such as the Baptist Bible
Chair, The Catholic Bible Chair or The
Jehovah Witness Bible Chair on university
campuses, but this international church of
Christ sect is very difficult to identify. They
blended in and appear to be the Church of
Christ whereby many joined them thinking
that they are of the Lord’s church. If you
ask a student , what church are you a mem-
ber, they will obviously say, I'm a member of
the Church of Christ, until later in their con-
versation, you will find out that they are of
this sect called the International Church of
Christ. For the next several issues, I will be
sharing with you some of the teachings and
discoveries of this group called the
“International Church of Christ.” First, I will
share with you what was written in the
Chicago Tribune of March 5, 2004 by
H.Gregory Meyer.

of past practices. A year later, church lead-
ers say they have corrected course and are
seeking to move forward, dropping an
obsession with numerical growth, with com-
pulsory contributions, with coercive "disci-
pleship partners" who kept fellow congre-
gants in line. They also are mending
fences. In what would have been an
unthinkable gesture a few years ago,
Chicago and other movement leaders ven-
tured to Abilene, Texas, last week to share
a hall with leaders of the mainline Churches
of Christ, the evangelical arm they splin-
tered from and said were headed for hell.
"We were expressing how we hurt the peo-
ple in the audience," said Steve Staten, an
elder of the Chicago Church of Christ. "We
had lots of tears in fellowship. Lots of hug-
ging, reconciliation. People making plans to
do things together." As the church faces
the future, it will confront the challenge of
maintaining its uniqueness without its
founder. For all the novel religious move-
ments that have found institutional legs
after the loss of charismatic leaders--the
Mormons, for instance--there is a long list
of forgotten sects that failed. The Chicago
church was established in 1982 as one of
the first congregations in the "Boston move-
ment," or International Churches of Christ.
Founded by McKean outside Boston, the
movement predicated its success on spec-
tacular expansion. In 20 years it had
reached about 130,000 members world-
wide, according to church figures.
But not without alienating more along the
way. In the mid-1980s the movement broke
with the mainline churches of Christ, which
itself dates to the evangelical Restoration
movement of the 19th Century. (The United
Church of Christ is a Protestant denomina-
tion separate from these evangelical
churches.) "The ICOC believed that they
were the only ones that were saved in the
world," said Rich Little, evangelist at the
mainline Naperville Church of Christ. "They
leave, they think they're going to hell, and
they're ostracized from the congregation,"
Reeves said. Nancy Bazile said she quit the
church last August after 10 years. "I just felt
that it was all too unhealthy for me, spiritu-
ally and physically." As a single woman liv-
ing in Hyde Park, she said the church had
forced her to take on boarders. "You would
be manipulated into having roommates
because living alone was seen as being
selfish, and tempting to adverse sexual
activity," Bazile said. Staten said that after
the scathing letter from London leader
Henry Kriete appeared in February 2003,
"things blew up." Many of the resentments
and questions from preceding years boiled
over and leaders of the church offered pub-
lic apologies at the Rosemont meeting.
"Our problem was an authoritarian arro-
gance," Staten said. He said many of the
issues people raised about the church,
from discipling to dating, had been dis-
avowed years before. But leaders had not
publicly renounced them. The short-term
damage was done. Church membership
dropped from 2,700 to 2,400, and the
Elmhurst office where the Chicago Church
of Christ is headquartered was slimmed
from 70 staff members to fewer than 50,
Staten said. Weekly revenue from tithes--
which former members say was assiduous-
ly monitored in databases--dropped from
$125,000 to $89,000, he said. But the lead-
ers' contrition is matched by confidence in
the church's survival, and a recent Sunday
service appeared far from the scene of a
crisis. The crowd spilled out of the seats at
Prosser Career Academy on the Northwest
Side, home to one of nine congregations in
the Chicago area. And it seemed almost
handpicked in its diversity: blacks, Hispanic
and whites; the young and the old; people
wearing khakis and drooping hip-hop gear.

correctness is significant and impor-
tant, but correct doctrine does not sat-
isfy if people are not finding the kind if
spiritual vitality that Jesus taught.
Churches are in trouble if they are
only oriented toward preserving
human traditions or toward maintain-
ing themselves as institutions rather
than toward accomplishing significant,
spiritual, objectives. It is increasingly
difficult to rally support for activities in
which people see no point.
The church is the foundation for
ministry, leadership and administra-
tion. An active church discovers what

The Church Has A Purpose

For any church to be successful
and accomplish God’s purpose, it must
consider and answer two basic ques-
tions. The first question is, What are we
supposed to be doing? This deals with
purposefulness which is a clear and
dominating sense of what it is sup-
posed to be accomplishing. The sec-
ond question is How well are we doing
it? This deals with what might be called
rationality which is the intelligent, delib-
erate, reasonable and scriptural things
that are done that move the church
toward accomplishing its purpose.
How well a church is fulfilling
its purpose must be an important con-
sideration. Unfortunately, many times a
church do not have a clear, authentic
purpose as a common commitment
among its members. Consequently, it
does not pursue a well-reasoned plan
and its activities and programs are not
worked out with an authentic rationale.
An effective church measures its suc-
cess in relationship to its purpose by
how well it is – winning people to Christ

After losing its leader, facing accusations
of cultism and other scandals, the Chicago
(International) Church of Christ attempts to
keep from falling apart. In the last year, the
friction was so strong inside the Chicago
Church of Christ that it ignited a "firestorm,"
in the words of one elder. The 22-year-old
evangelical church and its worldwide affili-
ates in the so-called "Boston movement"
long had been an institution that outsiders
compared to a cult for its rigid control of
church for what they call its heavy-handed
control. A decade ago the Illinois Senate
Education Committee named the group in
hearings on supposed campus cult activi-
ties in the state. Perhaps the most contro-
versial aspect has been the church's his-
toric emphasis on "discipleship partners,"
mentors assigned to guide members' spiri-
tual growth. For young members such
guidance could be illuminating, said Lee
Harrington of Naperville, a former member
who joined as a student at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. But in other
instances the partners were little more than

heard someone say, "If the Jews were required to give a tenth, then
Christians should give no less than a tenth because we live under a
better covenant". This raises the question are Christians required to
give a tithe today? The first case of giving a tenth in the Bible was
Abraham, who gave a tenth of the spoils of war to Melchizedek (Gen.
14:20). Jacob vowed a tenth (Gen.28: 20-22). The Bible gives no hint
as to when or to whom he gave his tenth. After Moses received the
law, the people were required to give a tenth in order to support the
Levites. The Levites in turn gave a tenth to support the priests
(descents of Aaron) who were also Levites. (See Num. 18:21-24, 28). At the time of the con-

to the National Denomination of
Churches for preaching over the years
the “Oneness of the Lord’s church.”
Here is a direct quote from Rick Atchley,
Minister of the Richland Hills Church of
Christ in Richland Hills, Texas, “African-
American churches still often preach
‘The-Church-of-Christ-Is-The-Only-One-
Going-To-Heaven’ kind of sermons.”
Rick stated, “the reason black preachers
preach that is because for decades the
Christian schools of the churches of
Christ denied young black men to come
study. The preachers in the black church-
es didn’t get good theological training.”
Rick also stated, that “this is the culture
in black churches for years...but there’s a
new generation of young black preachers
that want to break from that” and just
“preach GRACE.”

Dominican Republic
Tropical Storm Jeanne also killed 11 peo-
ple in the Dominican Republic, which
shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti,
and two in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico
Haiti
Tropical Storm Jeanne swept north of Haiti
during the weekend, drenching the impov-
erished Caribbean nation of 8 million, inun-
dating cities and sending deadly mud-
slides through towns and villages. Officials
at the Office of Civil Protection in Port-au-
Prince said 709 deaths had been con-
firmed in the flood-stricken areas and
1,050 people were missing. Most of the
dead were in the swamped coastal city of
Gonaives and the toll was likely to rise as
relief workers reached areas isolated by
the floods. "As the water recedes we begin
to see bodies emerge from the mud," said
Fernando Arroyo. "There are bodies scat-
tered on the roads, in the streets." The
dead were to be buried in mass graves as
soon as heavy machinery arrived, to avert
an outbreak of disease, he said.
CHRONIC FLOODING - Haiti, the poorest
country in the Americas, is chronically vul-
nerable to flooding because of widespread
deforestation. Flooding in May killed about
2,000 people. U.N. forces maintaining the
peace after Aristide's departure were help-
ing with rescue efforts and providing trans-
port for relief shipments. The hospital in
Gonaives was flooded and only small
amounts of medical supplies had reached
the city. Much of the medical care was
being provided by Argentine peacekeep-
ers. Gonaives residents recounted clinging
to trees to survive or seeing their relatives
die before their eyes. "The water started to
grow high, but we never thought it was
going to get so high," said Josephine
Mesadieu, 20. "Then it started to get up to
our necks, then I had to swim. My younger
brother and sisters could not do so, they
died."
Interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue
visited flooded areas of Gonaives and the
northern city of Port-de-Paix, and pledged
to provide all possible aid.
"We don't have much means but we'll
bring what we have," Latortue told a group
of Port-de-Paix residents.
At the United Nations, interim President
Boniface Alexandre appealed for world aid
at the opening of the annual General
Assembly session.
Grenada
The fierce winds that struck pulled apart
most roofs and left an acute crisis in
Grenada, where more than half the
100,000 residents are homeless and in
desperate need of shelter, water and basic
supplies. At least 34 people were killed and
more than 500 injured in the storm, and
hospitals with short supplies were straining
to deal with them. In the past day Alfred
said she'd eaten only some biscuits and
cheese brought by generous friends. "It's

not enough food," she said.
The American Red Cross disaster unit
planned to send $70,000 worth of relief
supplies. The country must have aid within
two days to avoid a critical situation. About
10 tons of donated supplies — from drink-
ing water to tarpaulins and medicine —
arrived aboard a fishing boat from nearby
Trinidad and Tobago. Private citizens came
up with the donations quickly, said Bruce
Milve, a 45-year-old Trinidadian who
helped organize the shipment. "That's just
how Caribbean neighbors are," he said
while unloading supplies near a boatyard
where scores of sailboats were blown over.
Venezuela will donate $1 million to
Grenada. A hospital ship for the injured will
be sent, as will food, water, and construc-
tion equipment. Terence Baptiste (one of)

of nine congregations on the island, des-

Cayman Islands
Roy Graneau called me today and asked
me to let you know that both he and his
family are safe and sound. Brother Martin
Royer (Minister for the George Town con-
gregation) and his family are safe as well.
Cayman islands has suffered over a billion
dollars in damages, almost all the church
members have lost their homes. Both the
church building in Georgetown and West
Bay were damaged severely due to flood-
ing as sea levels rose to over 10ft. All the
benches and songbooks were destroyed;
there is no electricity; phone lines are
down; most businesses are closed and
food is limited. However, water has recent-
ly been made available from the United
States Government. The total number of
deaths remains unknown but we do know
that many lives were lost. Our brethren are
thankful to God for His mercy and protec-
tion through this ordeal. Unfortunately a
few of the brethren have lost all that they
had and have been forced to relocate to
local shelters. Brethren, the need there is

VOLUNTEERS FOR THE PRESERVA-
TION OF THE CHURCH
This is a plea to all those who love and
respect the church of Christ to launch
their own personal
campaign for her
preser vation.
Across the nation
people
and communities
organize and dili-
gently work to
preserve historic
buildings, archeological ruins and natural
sites of unique beauty and worth. They
do this for themselves but also for the
benefit of those who will come after them.
Today the church of Christ is facing
a wide-spread assault from the hands
of preachers and educators in our midst.
Just as thoughtless and reckless citizens
neglect and destroy priceless historic
sites, the change agents working among
us are destroying the precious things of
Christ's church.
We desperately need devo u t
Christians who love the historic church,
her faith and worship, to come forward
volunteering to help protect and preserve
her from those who would destroy her. We
speak not of buildings of wood or stone,
but of the spiritual body of Christ
(Eph.1:21-23); his bride (Eph. 5:22-32; his
kingdom (Matt. 16:18).
We need Christians to speak up and
speak out in defense of the church and
her foundational doctrines and practices.
We need preachers who will invest the
necessary time and energy to inform
themselves about those who are calling
for change and the errors they are pro-
moting. We need them to use that infor-
mation to educate and inform their fellow-
Christians; both in their home congrega-
tions and the brotherhood at large.
We need strong, well-informed
preachers and elders who can and will
stand up to and confute the false teach-
ers of change (Acts 18:28); publicly if nec-
essary! We need strong and faithful
elders who will take the responsibility of
making sure their preachers are not
involved in the change movement. We
need men who will inform their preachers,
youth ministers and other teachers that
the views and promotions of the change
agents will not be tolerated in their midst.
Elders are needed that in interviewing
incoming workers will carefully question
them and make it crystal clear that no one
favoring this destructive movement will be
employed by them. We need devoted dis-
ciples who will speak to their elders and
preachers, expressing their concern for
the welfare of the church; that sound doc-
trine be sounded forth in their pulpits and
classrooms; who will let it be known
they will not abide the change movement
being brought into their congregation.
We need strong Christians who will
work with us to inform other Christians of
the dangers of the pernicious movement.
We need people who will assist us in get-
ting the monthly print edition of
“Christianity Then and Now” to the lead-
ers of every congregation in the country.
We need to send it to every congregation
in Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa and the Caribbean.
We need to send it to all foreign mission-
aries of the church. To all Schools of
Preaching and Bible departments of
Christian Schools. We need assistance
in disseminating the paper to as many
individual Christian families as possible.
Folks are needed who will duplicate their
monthly copies of the CTN and share
them with others of their congregation
and acquaintance. Internet users are
needed who will work with us by for-
warding our weekly lessons addressing
the change movement to all the
Christians on their email list. Christians
are needed to help underwrite the cost of
publishing tracts and books written by
competent brethren refuting various com-
ponents of the change heresy. We need
disciples who will not compromise their
faith and salvation by staying with a
church that has abandoned the New
Testament pattern of faith and worship for
the denominationalism of the change
movement.
Your state or community likely has a histor-
ical preservation society that is serving a use-
ful purpose. The Lord's church likewise needs
dedicated Christians who will work to protect
her in the same fashion.

editor’s note: Perry Cotham suffered from a
severed heart attack while conducting a
gospel meeting in Missouri. He was in the
hospital for several days where he had bypass
heart surgery. Presently, Perry is back on his
feet and on the mission field again. Last week
he was leaving for Kentucky for a gospel meet-
ing. He is still a licensed driver. Perry is also
writing a new gospel tract which is number
seventeen of his tract series, entitled
“Marriage - Divorce - Remarriage.” He
allowed me to read the rough draft of this new
track and I will encourage all church leaders to
purchase copies for your congregation.

Eleuthera - Bahamas
Praise God, Lincoln Young from Eleuthera
got a phone line to work on Sunday after-
noon. He is well. Much structural damage,
but no deaths in Eleuthera. He did mention
a second death in the Bahamas to add to
the one in Freeport. He had news from
Nassau and Freeport. He feels that
Freeport will suffer the most. Lincoln said
they got water back today and hope to
have power in 2 to 3 days. He said that he
heard there was a lot of structural damage
in Cat Island. Pray for the Deveaux family,
The Steve McQueen family, and the
Burrows and congregation in Long Island.
Pray too for the brethren in Freeport,
Abaco, and Nassau.

Thanks to Healing Hands International
(Nashville) for all their hard work in getting
our 40 foot container moving through
Savanna GA and on to Freeport. Whites
Ferry Road Relief Ministries has supported
this effort with funds along with the $5000
we sent to the Freeport brethren. All
Islands have been hit. Each congregation
in the Bahamas has been referred to
Freeport for help while others will be
assisted as money permits. Hurricane
Jeanne has been the most deadly, but not
the most destructive. We have been unsuc-
cessful in our attempts to contact Brother
and Sister Bothwell in Cayman. We contin-
ue to pray for them as we believe them to
be alive, but do not know their location or
condition, nor that of any of the brethren
there. Please pray for these in Cayman. For
those of you who know and love Lincoln
Young, he had his 37th birthday last
Sunday.

Happy Day

Sometime during my sons' second year, we
had opportunity to attend a birthday party. I
suppose there must have been something
rather fascinating to him about candles on a
cake and people all gathered singing "Happy
Birthday". Anyway, on the way home, he
looked up at me and asked, "Mommy, sing
happy day to you please??" WHAT!? ARE
YOU MAD!? Its not your birthday, you only
have one a year you know? This is stupid,
besides I'm driving and I don't have time for
this! But his persistence was unyielding and
the look of his big bright eyes in my rear view
mirror persuaded me. So, in my most melo-
dious voice I began to sing Happy Birthday
To You. Shocked by his obvious disappoint-
ment (sounds of screaming), I had to pull
along side the road to calm the child
down…why are you crying? Isn't this what
you wanted? "But mommy, you don't have
no lights"(And I guess it stands to reason
that you can't sing happy day without the
lights).
So I went home and lit a candle and pro-
ceeded to sing "Happy Day To You".
Delighted and rather contented, the child
thanked me and went on about his business.
He must have taken note of where I stored
the candles, for bright and early the very next
morning and each morning after that for
about a year, he presented himself with a

candle in hand asking me to light it and sing
Happy Day. You must imagine that this
became a part of the morning routine and
quite an annoyance.
Those days have past, and for him, they are
long forgotten, I thought about those morn-
ings today as I watched him head off to his
second grade class. Every time I sang the
little song with a candle, it would make him
smile and he would seem to have received
just sufficient fuel to face a new day. No it
wasn't his birthday every morning, but if you
think of it, it was in fact a new day of his life,
and a new beginning that he did not have the
day before and certainly would not have got-
ten the following day.
I thought about those mornings just today,
I thought of how it is that a candle symbol-
izes hope in the midst of immense darkness
and sorrow, how it is that any person at any
point in his/her life can decide to renew a
commitment to start anew, and determine
that he will live contentedly and have Happy
Days. I thought of those mornings and
strangely, I felt a pining emptiness, a yearn-
ing for its return, for you see, every morning
I sang Happy Day for I too was reminded that
it is a new beginning of my life. I think tomor-
row morning I will light a candle, say a
prayer, and sing Happy Day to Me. For every
new day presents fresh opportunity, and
every day offered with warm blood pumping
from a healthy heart is a blessing and indeed
a HAPPY DAY!

Youth Annual
Retreat
During the week of August 9th -14th,
over 200 young people from over 20
congregations converged on the
Moneague College in the cool hills of
St. Anns for our annual retreat under
the theme " that I May Win Christ.”
The week began with our usual night of
congregational singing which con-
vinced us the more that when
Christians come together great things
will happen. The singing of over two
hundred voices in praise to our God,
interspersed with prayer and readings
led many to tears. The highlights of the
week included a mock debate on
whether the sabbath should be kept. It
was wonderful to see these young peo-
ple exposing false doctrine and defend-
ing the Bible's teaching. Some of the
discussions included “Christian princi-
ples are just as real as any other law of
nature, that all of our lives belong to
God, and that there is no bridging of the
secular with the spiritual. One of the
major discussions centered on how
Christians should behave in their relati-
iosnhips and not allow the world to set
the standard for our lives.
On Thursday we took the gospel to the
community of Moneague where
Eugene Wilson ministered and handed
out tracts, which was followed up with
a street meeting. Bro Robert Solomon
preached for over an hour and two
souls walked forward and obeyed the
gospel. Our usual banquet night, con-

but were given forty-eight cities with their
pastures to live in. They were caretakers of
the Tabernacle and later the Temple and
assisted the priests. In addition they served
as teachers and even judges.
The tithe, which the other tribes paid,
was the means of support for the Levites.
Israel was a theocracy (a nation ruled by
God). The tithe was a form of income tax,
which supported their theocracy. At times
Israel failed in their tithing. For example
Malachi severely rebuked them for not
bringing the "whole tithe into the store-
they were cheating on their income tax.
Tithing was required until the death of
Christ, which ended the old law regarding
the Levites, and inaugurated the new

Hurricane
Charlie - Frances - Ivan
Most of us are aware of the death toll
and damage caused by Ivan in the
Caribbean all the way up to the Gulf
States. Our prayers are with the vic-
tims. Jeanne has now set her sights on
the Bahamas again, and perhaps into
Florida and or on a northerly course
into the US. Several reported dead in
Grenada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
More than a dozen of our church build-
ings in the Caribbean damaged. Two
completely destroyed. Many of our
brethren with roofs blown off. Jamaica
school of Preaching with significant
damage to the dorm/dinning area. The
school is temporarily closed. There is
an urgent need for drinking water and
food in Grenada and Jamaica. As of
this date, we have no word from the
brethren in the Cayman Islands, but
Gladwyn Kiddoe of Jamaica gives this
report: “The Cayman Islands was total-
ly devastated. News we have received
from the Cayman Islands indicates the
islands were totally devastated. It was
said that during the storm, the island
whole highest hill is 80 feet above sea
level, was almost totally engulfed by the
ocean. All residents survived by going
to the top of multi-story buildings or
higher ground. No one is reported to
have lost their lives.

pay taxes to the state (civil government),
which has replaced Israel's theocracy.
(Rom. 13:6-7). Nowhere does the N.T.
require Christians to tithe. It does instruct Y

us to give but does not say how much. Our M
giving is strictly voluntary between each
individual and God. It is to be according to
how we have prospered and it should be on
the first day of the week (1 Cor. 16:2) the
amount will vary with each individual.
Giving should be planned ahead of time and
not be an after thought (1 Cor. 9:7) It should
not be done grudgingly but cheerfully (1
Cor. 9:5,7). As we give we should keep in
mind that we reap in proportion to what we
sow (2 Cor. 9:6) and that ultimately we must
give an account of our deeds (Rom. 14:12)
Sometimes an emergency may arise or
some special cause may present an oppor-
tunity to give in addition to regular giving.
This might occur at a time other than the
first day of the week.
