An Appeal For The Jamaica
School Of Preaching

The Church of Christ has existed in
the Caribbean for over thirty years
because of the work of some of our
American
brethren and
all of us who
are members
of the Lord’s
Church. We
give God
thanks for
that legacy.
There is an
import ant
part of the
Church’s his-
tory that we seem to be forgetting and
that is the work that has been continu-
ing for well over thirty years by the
Jamaica School of Preaching and
Biblical Studies. Over three decades
ago this institution opened its doors to
train and prepare men and women for
service in the Kingdom of God. For
most of these years, the school has sur-
vived through the financial assistance
of our American brethren, a small por-
tion of churches and individual mem-
bers. The school has had a significant
reduction in the amount of financial sup-
port from overseas and must consider
other means of meeting its financial
obligations. Those of us who are aware
of the economic climate in Jamaica
know that this can be an uphill task. It is
time that Christians in Jamaica and the
rest of the Caribbean rise to the chal-
lenge of supporting the school. There is
hardly an existing congregation within
the Caribbean that has not been in
some way affected by the contribution
that this institution has made in the
training of preachers of the gospel
whether directly or indirectly.
For over twenty years men such as
Brothers Gladwyn Kiddoe, Francis
Yorke (past student), Leslie Goode
(past student) and countless others
have been laboring in the field teaching
men and women how to rightly divide
the word of truth. The influence of the
school spreads as far as North America
where many of our past students are
now preaching the gospel of Christ;
among them are Brothers Romeo
Tomlinson, Michael Roberts, Dudley
Gushman, Paul Gilbert, and Oliver
Bembridge, just to name a few. We all
need to understand that this institution
has an important role to play in the lives
of the future generation. We have a
duty to protect the legacy of the Church
in Jamaica and the Caribbean and if we
keep turning a blind eye towards the
struggles that the school faces we are
the ones who are going to pay the price
in the end.
I am a product of this institution. I
attended the Jamaica School of
Preaching for four years and even
though it was very difficult I am a better
person and preacher because of the
years I spent under the tutelage of
those great men of God. Today I
preach the gospel for the South Central
Church of Christ in Clarendon,
Jamaica. There are very few preachers
in Jamaica who have not attended the
school; its influences extends to the
Caribbean training preachers from
Cuba, Haiti, Bahamas, Grenada,
Belize, Dominica, St. Kitts & Nevis,
Turks & Caicos Islands.
W e who are members of the Lord’s
Church in Jamaica and the Caribbean
need to have a serious vision for the
Church - a part of this vision should
include support for the school by our
own efforts. We cannot afford to sit idly
and allow the devil to destroy what God
has built, had it not been for the work
done by men from the school many of
us would not be Christians today. Let us
join in the fight to save this beloved
institution so that men and women can
be taught how to expound God’s word
so that there will be hope in the future of
our children hearing the pure undiluted
gospel of Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to REPENT? The
Oxford dictionary states that the word
REPENT is a verb, a
doing word, and
means to feel regret
for why you have
done or failed to do.
Thus, the word
R E P E N TA N C E
(derived from the
word REPENT) is a noun, name of some-
thing or some action taken.
REPENT is translated from the Hebrew
word SHUB, a word used in Old
Testament times and means far more that
an intellectual change of mind or a feeling
of regret. However, the Greek words
M E TANOEO OR METANEIA translated
from the original manuscript of the New
Testament, carries the meaning of a
change of mind resulting in a change of
conduct. Therefore, REPENTA N C E
involves a complete change of attitude
regarding God and sin, accompanied by a
sense of sorrow and a corresponding
change of conduct. Such repentance is
not initiated by man himself, but is the
result of God’s mercy which leads men to
repentance; Acts 5:31; Rom 2:4; II Tim
2:25. It is by this very process that men
are converted and are born again.
Genuine repentance proves itself by the
fruits of a changed life.
Paul, on interviewing King Agrippa con-
cerning his conversion said, "...that they
should repent and turn to God, and do
works meet for repentance; Acts 26:20.
To the christians at Rome, he Paul wrote
"or despisest thou the riches of His good-
ness and forbearance and long-suffering;
not knowing that the goodness of God
leadeth to repentance; Rom 2:4. So too,
only the thought of God’s goodness
should inspire us to go to Him daily,
repenting of our sins and shortcomings.
Hear Paul again as he wrote to the
Corinthian christians, "For though I made
you sorry with a letter, I do not repent,
though I did repent. For I perceive that
the same epistle hath made you sorry,
though it was but for a while. Now I
rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but
that ye sorrow to repentance: for ye were
made sorry after a Godly manner, that ye
might receive damage by us in nothing.
For Godly sorrow worketh repentance to
salvation not to be repented of, but the
sorrow of the world worketh death." II Cor
7:8 - 10. That is what true repentance is
about.
Throughout the Old Testament there
are several examples where godly per-
sons, after falling short of God’s com-
mands, did not REPENT; did not return to
God and died spiritually, e.g. Esau, who
was more interested in his physical needs
sold his birthright for bread. Later when
he tried to regain the blessing from God,
he was rejected. Read the story in Gen
25:29-34; Heb:12:16-17.
Fortunately for us today, we have a lov-
ing Father who will always care for us and
has so demonstrated in the gospel of
John 3:16; His Son Jesus Christ, who is
our advocate or lawyer; I John 2:1-2; and
the Holy Spirit constantly making inter-
cession for our sakes; Rom 8:26-27. Let
us therefore, brethren, continue to walk
steadfastly in this present life, keeping
our focus on Jesus Christ our Saviour
and Lord, without compromise. Humbling
ourselves before His throne of mercy and
grace daily in true and honest repentance
of our sins and shortcomings.
As we live in these last days, let us
constantly remind ourselves that we
should be a prepared people striving to
be as He is - always Holy. Finally
brethren, be strong in the Lord and the
power of His might.
May God continue to bless and guide
us along this christian journey.

For the month of January we had two persons
added to the Lord s church by baptism. We
hope and pray that you will find a congregation
to assist us here in Haiti with financial support.
W e have services only on Sunday morning for
now from 9:am to 11:30am, because of the
political problems of the country. We worship
with fifty persons. Last Wednesday there was
one baptism. Next month we will preach a few
days at our annual conference despite we do
not have any means. Please pray for the work
here and we hope that someone will hear our
plea and assist us financially.
