COMPLYING WITH THE NEW DEFENCE STANDARD 00-56

4 - 5 April 2005
Interim Defence Standard 00-56 Issue 3 was published in January 2005. This new standard provides a comprehensive approach to ensuring system safety through safety management and the provision of objective assurance arguments and evidence. The standard provides greater flexibility for contractors in compliance but requires correspondingly greater competence in providing goal based arguments and evidence for the safety of systems. This two day course explains the fundamental concepts of the new standard and will deliver the understanding and guidance on compliance. An understanding of where to find additional guidance and how it can be used to demonstrate compliance.

Who Should Attend?

This course will be of interest to managers, engineers and others involved in the development of systems for the defence market.

Tutors
Prof. John McDermid is a well-known authority on safety related systems and leads the High Integrity Systems Engineering group at the University of York. John advised the Ministry of Defence Safety Standards Review Committee throughout the standard's revision process. Dr Tim Kelly is a lecturer in Critical Systems at the University of York, and Deputy Director of the Rolls-Royce Systems and Software Engineering University Technology Centre. Tim is perhaps best known for his influential work on the Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) for developing and presenting safety arguments. Mrs Viv Hamilton is one of the authors of the new standard and the author of the software guidance material. She is a consultant with over fifteen years experience in safety related software systems mainly in defence and aerospace and also authored Defence Standard 00-55 issue 2.

Course Overview
Through a mixture of presentations and hands-on exercises the course will introduce the principles and structure of the new standard, provide guidance on how to formulate compliant safety arguments (especially for complex electronic systems), and discuss how to appropriately select evidence. Attendees will receive copies of all presentation materials.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
An understanding of the structure and philosophy of Defence Standard 00-56 Issue 3 Insight into a range of strategies for assurance of safety related systems An appreciation of the factors that have shaped the evolution of the standard Practical knowledge of constructing arguments for the safety of systems An understanding of the relationship with other standards
