NATIONWIDE DIRECT ACTION TO EVICT THE DEA Medical Marijuana Advocates Rally Nationwide

Houston,
Texas Local activists are calling for the eviction of the DEA for criminal violations of patients and voters rights in a
national day of action coordinated in over 50 cities across the U.S. Dean Becker, President of Houston NORML and Jerry Epstein, Executive Director of the Drug Policy Forum of Texas will be serving the
eviction notices at the Federal Building as activists demand that the DEA and the Bush Administration put an end to their policies of
harassing and arresting medical marijuana patients and providers.

WHO:
Dean Becker and Steve Nolin of Houston NORML, Jerry Epstein and Dr. G.
Alan Robison of the Drug Policy Forum of Texas, and others. WHAT: Press conference and demonstration at the Mickey Leeland Federal Bldg. WHEN: NOON ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2003 WHERE: Federal building at 1919 Smith Street This
national day of action is part of a campaign initiated by Americans for
Safe Access that began in June 2002, when activists in 54 cities around
the country served the DEA with orders to cease and desist the federal attack on medical marijuana. When the DEA violated the cease and desist orders and California state law by raiding medical marijuana
dispensaries, activists served them with citations. Now, as the Bush Administration and the United States Congress prepare to choose a new DEA chief, activists in over 50 cities will serve the DEA with eviction notices. According
to a recent Time Magazine article, 80% of Americans are in favor of the
use of Marijuana for Medical purposes, and 8 states have already voted to legalize it for medical use. The DEA, however, continues to override democratic decision-making, with over 40 people currently facing federal charges. The DEA and the Bush administration are acting against the will of the people, said Zeal Stefanoff, a local patient now facing prison because of his past use of medical marijuana. It has become obvious to us that simply having the support of the majority of Americans is not enough. We have to make our voices heard. NORML
(the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) is the oldest drug policy reform organization in the U.S., having been founded in D.C. in 1972. The DPFT was founded in 1995 to call attention to the harm being caused by our current national policy of drug prohibition, the so-called war on drugs, and to stimulate discussion of policy alternatives to it. To
arrange interviews with local participants please call Cheryl Ann Nolin
at 713-783-5755 or Jerry Epstein at 713-784-2637. For medical marijuana dispensaries, patients or other ASA activists please call Brant Olson at 202-986-6186 or 202-365-3535 (cell).
