CASE STUDY NO: 1: ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR Q1.) Analyze various factors which influence Enterprise's decisions about where to locate a new Branch? The company thoroughly scans their existing branchs performance and analysis the forecasting based demands for each branch in order to make a potential location to start a new branch. The business development managers look for the population density for the target area and collects the data related to cars rented by the target areas customer from the nearest branches in order to narrow down on the non availability of the Enterprises branch. Once short listing a target area, their project team will carry out virtual revenue forecast incorporating the setup, fixed and variable costs for the potential branch and then generating

the net present value, internal rate of return and return on investment projections to make a decision whether the new branch will be financially viable or not. The company takes care into account that the branch to be closed to the referral sources like vehicle repair centres, mechanics and dealerships. This result in the above mentioned people direct and recommend their customers to the enterprise. The branch should have a good layout design related to good access and parking space. The design of the branch should have some value added service for customers like internet wireless fidelity hotspots, customer resting lounge and other basic facilities in order to provide customers benefits while spending quality time in the branch. Q2.) Explain why Enterprise Rent-A-Car tries to locate Branches close to its Customers. The core service provided by the Enterprise is completely focussed on making a common person to try out their car renting facility in order to capture the person as their potential customer. For this service to happen, it is necessary for the company to make it visible enough for the people in order to avail the service. By having its branch in densely populated areas, busy areas like airports and nearby to business partners the service can provided within an optimal time. The key differentiation factor with the enterprise rent-a-car to that of their competitors is their quality of care and attention given to their customers. Also by having the branch close to the busy areas where the signs and fittings at each place where the branch is located display the Enterprise corporate logo and reflect the companys colours and branding thus increasing the brand awareness of the company among the general public thereby adding to the brand equity.

CASE STUDY NO: 2: FACILITY LAYOUT AT WHEELED COACH


Q1.)What are the current layout related problems faced by Wheeled Coach? What techniques and approached should Wheeled Coach use to solve these problems? Problems faced by the Company Wheeled Coach are The number of work in progress inventory is large in number. Assignment of the number of workers in different stages of manufacturing like painting, aluminum fabrication and body installment

Throughput time of manufacturing of ambulance is high. The entire process takes about 28 days. Ensuring the quality of the manufacturing process Cost of the labors, raw materials and other inventories Support systems are placed close to the manufacturing process

Techniques and approached should Wheeled Coach use to solve these problems The assembly line is unorganized and they should focus on improving it. Number of workers, station capacity, managing the work in process inventory. Minimizing the idle time at each workstation by monitoring the process flow and the assembly line involved in the manufacturing on ambulance. Product oriented layout should be followed as the assembly activities takes place in different cells. The company should sequence the process based on the order of importance and completion /activity time. this can help reducing slack and increasing productivity Effective moving of the parts between various work areas should be done taking into consideration of the cost time and labor effort. The assembly line should be designed in such a way that parallel activities should be done. The flow of information, materials or people, improve employee morale and safer working conditions, and flexibility are some of the various other factors which should also be taken into consideration. .

Q2.)What are the various measures which you will use to measure the efficiency of this layout? The various measures which can be used to measure the efficiency can be done by Managing the throughput time of the entire process, if the through put time is made efficient more number of manufacturing of ambulances can be done. The difference between manufacturing of the successive units should be managed well and minimization of slack should also be done. To have the company running the major inputs are the labours, workstation and equipments. So the number of labors and workstation should comprehend eachother not having a shortage or excess number of labours. The Labour productivity should also be improved by providing better training and giving enough motivation to the employees.
