1.1 Purpose and types of pumping stations

The main purpose of pumping stations is to transfer fluids from low points to higher points. The main types of pumping stations are: Wastewater PS. Water PS. Sludge PS. Storm water PS.

1.2 Types of pumps

Pumps are classified into two main categories: Kinetic pumps.

Centrifugal pumps ( radial, axial, mixed flow) Turbine (vertical) pumps Rotary pumps ( screw, lobe) Reciprocating pumps (plunger)

Positive displacement pumps.

The common feature of all centrifugal pumps is the Volute

The vertical pumps are equipped by a diffuser instead the Volute

Lecture 1: Introduction to Pumping Stations

In the screw pump a revolving shaft fitted with blades rotates in an inclined trough and pushes the water up the trough.

In the reciprocating pump a piston sucks the fluid into a cylinder then pushes it up causing the water to rise.
