The word classification comes from the word classify which means

A classification essay arranges and organizes a topic or subject into categories. The purpose of a classification essay is to break things down so they can be further investigated. Some classification essays breakdown the subject matter into categories that are easily distinguishable and clear, whereas others may aim to show unlikely or contrasting components.

Classification essay structure


The structure of a classification essay is built around the construction of the categories.

1. Introduction

(The basic part pf the introduction is the thesis statement. The strength of the thesis statement depends on how well it reveals the topic and its classification. t is to justify the specific categories chosen for this classification!. The thesis statement has a very determined logical structure" theme its classification chosen categories (the number of categories is suggested to be limited to three in order not to blur the classification!. #or instance" $%change students can face three benefits" education, e%perience and cultural e%change.

n a good classification essay each category must follow one organizing principle. The categories can be organized on the basis of forming different groups of arguments!.

The conclusion is the summary of the analyzed categories and the restatement of the thesis statement.

Three Steps to Effective Classification:


1. Sort things into useful categories. 2. Make sure all the categories follow a single organizing principle. 3. Give examples that fit into each category.

A. Finding Categories
This is a key step in writing a classification essay. To classify, or sort, things in a logical way, find the categories to put them into. #or e%ample, say you need to sort the stack of papers on your desk. 'efore you would put them in random piles, you would decide what useful categories might be" papers that can be thrown away( papers that need immediate action( papers to read( papers to pass on to other coworkers( or papers to file.

B. Thesis Statement of a Classification Essay


The thesis statement usually includes the topic and how it is classified. Sometimes the categories are named. (topic!...(how classified!...(category! (category! (category! $%" Tourists in Hawaii can enjoy three water sports: snorkeling, surfing, and sailing.

Tips on writing

Determine the categories. Be thorough; don't leave out a critical category. For example, if you say ater sports of !a aii include snor"eling and sailing, #ut leave out surfing, your essay ould #e incomplete #ecause surfing is !a aii's most famous ater sport. $n the other hand, don't include too many categories, hich ill #lur your classification. For example, if your topic is sports shoes, and your organi%ing principle is activity, you ouldn't include high heels ith running and #o ling shoes. Classify by a single principle. $nce you have categories, ma"e sure that they fit into the same organi%ing principle. The organi%ing principle is ho you sort the groups. &o not allo a different principle to pop up unexpectedly. For example, if your unifying principle is 'tourist(oriented' ater sports, don't use another unifying principle, such as 'native ater sports,' hich ould have different categories: pearl diving, outrigger, or canoe racing.
