Unit Theme: Day of the Dead Title: Day of the Dead Lesson Plan Grade: 9-12 Lesson: Cultural interpretation of the Day of the Dead Time: 1 hour Strategy Employed: Metaphorical Expression State Standards: 2.1. Practices and Perspective 4.2. Compare Cultures. APS Gifted Standards: Higher Order and Critical Thinking Analyze arguments and raise relevant questions Analyze, predict, discriminate, infer, see relationships Essential Question: How the tradition of the Day of the Dead is similar in Mexico, United States, Guatemala and Ecuador? Objectives: Knowledge: What will students know as a result of their engagement with this lesson? History of the celebration in countries such as Mexico, United States, Guatemala and Ecuador. Relate special celebrations or traditions in their own culture with the traditions presented in the Latin American countries. Skills: What will students be able to do as a result of their engagement with this lesson? Explore metaphors Create personal analogies Materials: Lesson Framework: - Museum Metaphors Hook: Metaphor Museum- Students will rotate to various stations answering - Drawing Paper the questions presented at each station. - Pictures -How is a Papel picado like a tomb? - Graphic Organizer -When you think about dead what color comes to mind? (why) - Papel picado -How does Las Calaveras sound? - Pan de muerto. -How is Creativity like an el pan de muertos? Explore the tradition- students will be taken to the interactive lab to research Information about the celebration of the dead in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador and in some places/cities in the United States. Class will work in groups of 4 students sharing the found information. They will create simple brochures with the information they found. Class groups will present the brochures and highlight each piece of information that is relevant to the activity. As a whole group teacher will discuss what happens in the celebration in

each country and how it is different and similar in each country. After the class has discussed the differences in each country, distribute Metaphorical Comparison Sheet. In their groups have students identify how the components in celebrating the Day of the Dead are like. Encourage students to illustrate the differences in each celebration as well. Students will create and illustrate a story entitled I write the biography of ______ (allow them to determine an ancestor or any individual that they would like to commemorate). Encourage them to write the story in first person explaining why each of its details is important. Each group will present their findings. Reading Focus

During: Metaphorical comparison sheet will allow teacher to see what students understand about the Day of the Dead.

After: Student stories will allow teacher to have an idea of what students understand about The celebration of the Day of the Dead.

Nonverbal students will be allowed to illustrate their knowledge of the celebration on the graphic organizer. Students will be allowed to share their experiences and utilize these feelings to encourage metaphorical thinking about commemorating a deceased ancestor. Students who are able to complete the personal analogy stories quickly should attempt to plan an activity to remember an ancestor.
