What is a section?

What is a section?
& section is a %lock o$ te0t that has s!ecial attri%'tes and $or#atting. Ao' can 'se sections to:

O!en WriterCs )nsert Section window. *se the )nsert Section window to c'sto#iBe a new section. Save the new section.

Opening the Insert

To o!en WriterCs )nsert Section window1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 4lace the c'rsor at the !oint in "o'r doc'#ent where "o' want to insert the new section. Or1 select the te0t that "o' want to !lace in the new section. 28 Fro# the #ain #en'1 choose Insert > Section... The )nsert Section window o!ens. "aming sections

Writer a'to#aticall" enters a na#e $or the c'rrent section in the to! %o0 o$ the New section area. To change the na#e1 si#!l" t"!e over it.
#inking sections

Ao' can insert the contents o$ another doc'#ent into the c'rrent section and then have Writer '!date the section whenever the other doc'#ent is '!dated. This is called linking the section to the other doc'#ent.

To link the c'rrent section to another doc'#ent1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 )n the Link area 6see Fig're 281 check the Link check%o0.

Note: #he section must alrea!$ e%ist in the selecte! !ocument. &ou cannot create a section in the selecte! !ocument at this 'oint. )$ "o' are $a#iliar with 22E o%3ect linking and !re$er to 'se 22E co##ands $or linking1 check the DDE check%o0. Write$protecting sections

To write>!rotect the c'rrent section so that its contents canCt %e edited1 check the Protect check%o0 in the rite !rotection area 6Fig're D8.

To !revent others $ro# editing the sectionCs attri%'tes or $or#at1 !rotect the section with a !assword1 as $ollows: 18 heck the it" !assword check%o0. The Enter 4assword window 6Fig're 48 o!ens.

%iding sections

Ao' can hide the c'rrent section so that it wonCt %e dis!la"ed on the screen or !rinted. Ao' can also s!eci$" conditions $or hiding the section. For e0a#!le1 "o' can hide the section onl" $ro# certain 'sers. To hide a section1 check the &ide check%o0 in the @ide area 6Fig're +8.

*se the Columns ta%1 !ict'red in Fig're H1 to $or#at the c'rrent section into col'#ns.

!sing a predefined column layout

The Settings area dis!la"s $ive !rede$ined col'#n la"o'ts. To 'se one o$ the#1 si#!l" click the desired la"o't.
pecifying the number of columns

)$ "o' !re$er to create a c'sto#iBed col'#n la"o't1 "o' #'st s!eci$" the n'#%er o$ col'#ns that "o' want. Enter the desired n'#%er in the Columns s!in %o0 o$ the Settings area.

&istributing te't across columns

Ao' can choose to distri%'te te0t across the col'#ns in one o$ two wa"s:

E'enl(. )$ "o' choose to distri%'te te0t evenl"1 Writer will $ill the $irst line o$ each col'#n1 $ollowed %" the second line o$ each col'#n1 and so on. News!a!er)st(le. )$ "o' choose to distri%'te te0t news!a!er>st"le1 Writer will $ill the col'#ns one at a ti#e1 %eginning with the $irst col'#n.

To distri%'te te0t evenl"1 check the E'enl( distri*ute contents to all columns check%o0 in the Settings area. lear this check%o0 i$ "o' want to distri%'te te0t news!a!er>st"le.
Formatting column width and spacing

To create evenl">s!aced col'#ns that are all the sa#e width1 check the +uto check%o0 in the Width and s!acing area. To c'sto#iBe the width and s!acing o$ the col'#ns1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 )n the Width and s!acing area1 clear the +uto idt" check%o0. 28 On the Width line1 enter a width $or each col'#n.

Formatting separator lines

To dis!la" se!arator lines %etween the col'#ns1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 Fro# the Line dro!>down list in the Se!arator line area1 select the t"!e o$ line that "o' want. 28 -" de$a'lt1 the se!arator lines are the sa#e height as the col'#ns. )$ "o' want the se!arator lines to %e shorter than the col'#ns1 'se the &eig"t s!in %o0 to enter the height o$ the se!arator lines as a !ercentage o$ the height o$ the col'#ns. For e0a#!le1 i$ "o' enter +0I1 the se!arator lines will %e hal$ as high as the col'#ns. D8 )$ "o' entered a height o$ less than 100I1 'se the Position dro!>down list to select a vertical align#ent $or the se!arator lines.
(everting to a single$column layout

To revert to a single>col'#n la"o't1 si#!l" reset the Columns s!in %o0 to 1. Or1 in the Settings area1 click the single>col'#n la"o't thatCs located to the right o$ the Columns s!in %o0.

!sing the Indents tab


*se the Indents ta%1 !ict'red in Fig're ,1 to set indents in the right and le$t #argins o$ the c'rrent section. Enter the desired le$t>#argin indent in the Be#ore section s!in %o0. Enter the desired right> #argin indent in the +#ter section s!in %o0. The !review %o0 on the right>hand side o$ the ta% shows "o' how the section will look with the indents a!!lied.

*se the Background ta%1 !ict'red in Fig're .1 to add color or a gra!hic to the %ackgro'nd o$ the c'rrent section.
Adding color

To add color to the %ackgro'nd o$ the c'rrent section1 si#!l" click the desired color in the color grid.

Adding a graphic

To add a gra!hic to the %ackgro'nd o$ the c'rrent section1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 Fro# the +s dro!>down list1 select ,ra!"ic. The Background ta% dis!la"s the gra!hics o!tions. 6See Fig're J.8 28 lick the Browse %'tton. The Find =ra!hics window o!ens. D8 Find the gra!hic $ile that "o' want to 'se and then click the $!en %'tton. The Find =ra!hics window closes and the selected gra!hic a!!ears in the gra!hic !review %o0 on the right>hand side o$ the Background ta%. 6)$ "o' donCt see the gra!hic1 check the Pre'iew check%o0 'nderneath the gra!hic !review %o0.8

48 )n the T"!e area o$ the Background ta%1 choose how "o' want the %ackgro'nd gra!hic to a!!ear:

To !osition the gra!hic in a s!eci$ic location in the %ackgro'nd1 select Position and then click the desired location in the !osition grid. To stretch the gra!hic so that it $ills the entire %ackgro'nd area1 select +rea. To re!eat the gra!hic across the entire %ackgro'nd area1 select -ile.

&eleting color or graphics

To delete color or gra!hics $ro# the %ackgro'nd o$ the c'rrent section1 $ollow these ste!s: 18 Fro# the +s dro!>down list1 select Color. 28 lick No Fill on the color grid.

Customi,ing footnotes

To save a new section so that it a!!ears in "o'r doc'#ent1 click the Insert %'tton. The )nsert Section window closes and the new section a!!ears in "o'r doc'#ent.

To rena#e the c'rrent section1 si#!l" t"!e over its na#e in the Section area. Fro# the Edit Sections window1 "o' can also edit the c'rrent sectionCs link1 write>!rotect1 and hide attri%'tes. To learn how to edit these attri%'tes1 see:

The O!tions window has $o'r ta%s: Columns/ Indents/ Background/ and Footnotes/Endnotes. To learn how to 'se these ta%s1 see:

To reset a ta% to its #ost recentl" saved settings1 click the Reset %'tton. To save "o'r O!tions settings and ret'rn to the Edit Sections window1 click $%.
