A New Year? It can be so much more

I expect most of you are back into your normal routine. Adults are back to work, children are preparing to go back to school, and life continues as it did before. The holiday season is now behind us. We always start a new year with fresh ideas and thoughts about what we are going to achieve during the next twelve months. Do you ever write down your new years resolutions, and then review them at the end of the year to see how you did? I think most peoples resolutions rarely see the month out and by the end of the year they cant even remember what they were! Perhaps we go about our resolutions the wrong way. Often we jump in at the deep end and try to make dramatic changes at once, which then we find impossible to keep up with, instead of trying to slowly introduce new habits. Apparently it takes a whole six weeks for a new habit to become part of your normal behaviour. What about spiritual resolutions? I think many people resolve that they will read the Bible every day, and start again on January 1st. Im sure many people also resolve to be better people and to help others. But why do we always leave these resolutions to the new year? Surely we can try to be a better Christian starting on any day we choose? Lets remember what Paul says: If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17) When you choose to follow Jesus you are part of the new creation! This means that we are part of Gods covenant of grace and forgiveness, and if we choose to walk towards Gods kingdom every day, we can start fresh every single day. We dont have to wait for the new year. So if you havent made any spiritual resolutions, you can do it today, or tomorrow, or next month it doesnt matter. Every step we take brings up closer to the kingdom. As for the next twelve months, why not make it the year that you finally make regular Bible reading a habit! May God bless you this year, whatever your spiritual resolutions may be. (taken from FindingGod.co.uk)

Gods Cadets Happy New Year (Lt. Sian Radford)

As we start a new year there is much focus on change. People want to change their lifestyle, seek to start a new routine or ritual that will make them happier, healthier, and more fulfilled with life. There is of course nothing wrong with making positive choices to seek to change our circumstances, trying to better ourselves by learning a new skill, or taking up a new activity, or even deciding we want to trim our waistline (I write this as I reach for the Christmas chocolatesagain!) but it is not necessarily what is most important. As we start a new year we have a new beginning, a fresh start, an opportunity to begin again with God. The past is behind us, God knows and understands all that it has entailed and all that we have been through, and we can begin again and look forward to this New Year with hope and expectation because He is with us. And unlike things around us that may change, God does not, and will not; He does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17) so great is His love and faithfulness towards each one of us. So whatever this New Year has in store for us we can face it with confidence and without fear for we know the One who holds the future in His hands and we know however hard it may seem at times, He will never fail us or let us down. May we as individuals and as a church family continue to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is always faithful! (Hebrews 10:23) This coming Tuesday (7th) at 9pm on BBC4 a programme called Gods Cadets will be broadcast. It follows a group of cadets as they go through their training at the college in London. An inside view at their lives and their journey of faith with God.
