PUBLISHING
Publishing your book can seem complicated. First, some definitions: Self-publishing generally means the author fronts the cost of printing the book. Traditional or big city publishing usually means someone else is funding the printing of the book. There are pros and cons to each. Before selecting a company to work with to self-publish your book, get these questions answered: 1. How does the process work? 2. Is there a specific point person I will contact? 3. How long before my book is in print? 4. Who owns the rights to my book? 5. How do order copies of my own book? 6. How can I make changes to my book after its printed? 7. Who can I talk to if I have questions? List your other questions here. TITLE IDEAS
Although your books final title doesnt have to be decided until closer to the publishing process, its helpful to have a working title that inspires you to create your book. 3 Fast Tips: 1. Have both a main title and subtitle. 2. Keep your attention-grabbing main title short, preferably five words or fewer. 3. Explain more in your subtitle, naming the benefits your reader will gain from your book. Playing Title Idol is a Write a Book in a Weekend participant favorite where contestants can try on different titles for the studio audience. Write a Book in a Weekend is the online, virtual event where you can actually start and finish your book in two days. Find out more at www.WriteWithDonna.com.

BONUS! 11 Keys to Make Write a Book in a Weekend Easier on You (and Those Around You!)
Register for Write a Book in a Weekend at www.WriteWithDonna.com
1. Create the Write Environment Your surroundings play a big role toward your success. Make sure you set yourself up the right way by creating a book writing environment for yourself. Items aspiring authors might want to have handy on or around their table or desk include pens, paper, notepads and research, along with fresh flowers or inspirational quotes. Others like to be near a corkboard or blank wall where they can post notes or storyboard their book out. 2. Get Ready for the Weekend-Long Haul Other ways you can get your surroundings ready to support you for the weekend are planning out your meals and other requirementsand making sure those requirements are filled. Ideas include prepping as many meals as possible (or putting someone else in charge of the cooking!). Lay in some healthy snacks and plenty of water. Think of it as prepping for a race and what you want to have near-by along the way. 3. Get Buy-In from Family Members If you share your house with others, give them the low-down on what youre doing and tell them specifically how they can support you. Husbands and wives can take care of some of the cooking, cleaning and make sure youre staying hydrated. Kids can write notes of support or make posters to hang outside your author at work area. 4. Anticipate Hurdles Look ahead to the weekend and where speedbumps might occur. Not a morning person? Get a good start on Friday night so you already hit the ground running come Saturday morning. Not a night person? Save the fun and easy stuff such as writing your dedication or acknowledgements during the times where youre not fully on. Finally, prepare a few self-talk mantras (I can do this! I AM doing this!I can see my book taking shape!) that will boost you up when the going might get tough. 5. Pick a Book, (Almost) Any Book Grab a few books off your own shelf to have near-by so you can look at them when what goes where or formatting questions come up. The samples will serve as a visual bridge and soon youll see how your book will come to be and what it will look like, too. One caveat: Dont surround yourself with books on or similar to your topic. They can actually serve as demotivators for the weekend as you write your own book. Instead, pick ones in other fields or genres.

6. Keep It Short & Powerful This is the BIGGEST key to success to get your book done in a weekend. Start small and build from there. Remember, you can always add material if you dont have enough content. Its more difficult to boil down rather than build up. 7. When Chapter 1 Isnt Chapter 1 After creating your Power Outline, start where youre most excited and dig in to writing. This may mean the first chapter you write is actually the third chapter in your book. Also, when you start where youre most turned on, you may find that chapter can turn into a book itself! Youll be very happy you wrote it right the first time rather than wasted time on chapters you felt you should write first. 8. Write First, Format Later This is the SECOND BIGGEST key to success to get your book done in a weekend. Dont worry about fonts, spacing, and all the rest during the process of writing. Being distracted by selecting fonts and adding illustrations and all the rest can bring your momentum to a grinding halt. Instead, use the weekend for what its meant for and simply write! 9. Write First, Revise Later Send the Inner Critic beastie to San Diego for the weekendI have reserved spots at the San Diego Zoo where it will be locked up nice and tight. That way you wont have that imaginary editor looking over your shoulder all weekend and instead can focus on writing the words first and getting the grammar, punctuation and all that taken care of later. 10. Danger: Emotional Curveballs Ahead Even writing a non-fiction book can bring up a bunch of stuff in our hearts that turn into tears. It can also come from writing your story, which is something I encourage a lot of authors to include in their books. If you feel that might be coming for you, be prepared (with some Kleenex). One way of working through it is allowing yourself a set amount of time to cry say 5 minutes and then put your proverbial writing hat on and get back to work thinking of yourself as a reporter telling the story vs. the person who lived the story. 11. Give It Your All (Inspired by a Coach Eric Taylor pre-game pep talk on Friday Night Lights) The purpose of Write a Book in a Weekend is to give you the tools and the focus to get your book done. You have a game plan. Write one word after another until that book is complete. Also, there is joy to be found in the process. There is a reason youre doing this other than the pride it will give you when youre done. And have fun with it. Because come Monday morningif you give yourself 100% this weekendpeople are going to look at your differently. People are going to think of you differently. And I promise you, youre going to look and think differently about yourself.

THE POWER OF THE WRITTEN WORD

Thoughts about life, business and writing from Write a Book in a Weekend participants.
NOTE FROM DONNA: Write 200 words describing The Power of Writing. Do it within 24 hours and do it while working on your own book. Thats the assignment I gave my students during a recent Write a Book in a Weekend when they were already immersed into creating their own book or, as I call it, big business card. I had hope they would tap into the powerful reasons they chose to write a bookand the powerful reasons they wanted to share their messages with others. My students did not disappoint. Read on for messages from them about why you shouldno, why you wantto write a book.

If Not Now, When?

Articles, compilation books, journaling, blogging, Facebooking, personal letters: I love to write! Whether I record my thoughts on paper with my favorite green ink pen, take notes on my Kindle, or type on the computer, I love to write! One of my nightmares is to be on an island without an abundance of paper, pens and at least one book. I love to read! If I had to choose, Id request the Bible. Its endless messages would renew my spirit and ignite hope. Ive spent years creating a book that is still in progress. The message from my experiences of feeling worthless and how God lifted me out of the pit is still relevant; however, imagine those women who needed to know but didnt. What message expresses your passion? Could sharing your story change a life and give others hope? Do you have knowledge that could guide someone in a better direction? I feel a sense of urgency to publish my book. My husband and I face health challenges. God extended my window of opportunity and put people in my path to coach me over the finish line. If not now, when? Just start! Bless a reader and change a life. If you risk the reach, you will reap the reward.

You Are Not Alone

Recovering from divorce wasnt easy. I learned a lot about myself and the areas I needed to improve. As a result of training to become a life coach at the same time of my divorce, I decided to become a divorce coach. More specifically a divorce recovery coach, so that others dont to have to suffer through feelings of why me...or a lack of self-confidenceor fighting with their ex.or fear of losing touch with their childrenor uncertainty of going back out into the dating scene after all this time. If there is anything you feel passionate about, you are probably not alone. As a coach, I wanted to be able to help as many people as possible understand that there is a light at the end of the divorce tunnel. Writing a book for me was about communicating that message to as many people as possible. All you have to do is jump in, put thoughts down and see where it takes you.

Words Are Powerful

Words are powerful. They can uplift and stir passions. They can inspire and inform. They condemn and convict, or they liberate and pardon. It is my honor to be a part of a tradition of written words intended to inspire and uplift and inform and awaken the power within you. As I write, I picture you receiving my words, incorporating them into your life, and gleaning some benefit. It is humbling to think how many people I reach and touch by sharing my ideas in the form of the written word. And, once those words are gathered together into book form and printed and purchased and made a part of librariespersonal and publicaround the world, they become a lasting and living part of our cultureno telling the magical chains of events that can pass a book from one hand to the next! As a writer of songs, poems, blogs, newsletters, and books, I can say there is something truly special about the feeling of writing and completing a book. Nothing compares to that sense of accomplishment. If you are thinking of writing a book, just do it! Youll be so glad you did.

Words Connect Us
I was always supposed to be a writer. It just took me this long to find my voice. Ive written bad poetry, mediocre newspaper articles, sales sheets, technical manuals and filled more journals and workbooks than I could count, but now, for the first time, I lay my soul bare on a page, and let others think whatever they want. Words, both spoken and written have the power to convey the rawest of human emotion. They can touch you in places nothing else can reach. They can reach out from paper or screen and touch a person youve never met. Words connect us through time and space. Being this open terrifies me. I have practiced in anonymous forums and found more support and understanding there than I ever imagined. I am doing this now because I have to, because so many others are on a similar path to mine and I know the way out of the darkness. I cant just leave them there. My words may serve as a guide for them, as others did for me. You have this wisdom, too. Something you know just one percent better than anyone else. Someone needs to hear your words. Write them.

It Brings You Home

Writing is expression that opens you to your inner truth creating vulnerability, which can be scary, but how wonderful! As life is richest in the facing of fears, writing breaks through to your greatest empowerment. Writing brings you home to yourself, to your unconscious fears and self sabotage, and supports others to do the same, engendering and promoting souls growth through healing transformation. The bestseller Eat, Pray, Love became wildly successful for that reason, and the author, Elizabeth Gilbert says: Its okay to write a book that gets bad reviews. Its okay to write a book that no one reads. The idea is just to focus on how you want to spend your life. Gilbert drives home the value of finding out how you want to spend your life, and giving yourself permission to spend it that way, regardless of what anyone else thinks! Its a call to freedom! The human race has learned and evolved through each others stories. You are herewhy are you here? To go to work and worry and have health problems and die of cancer or Alzheimers? No way! You are here to evolve, heal yourself, be the love that you are, live in joy, and record your unique lifes experiences for the support and encouragement of others, for you know that in these times we all need all the support we can get, and the world needs it!

Express Your Souls Voice

On my journey, I have reawakened my soul this year and begun living from its guidance provided to us all. As I continue to grow deeper in connection with my soul I have found that I cant express my soul vision fast enough. So writing is a way for my soul to have a voice and to be seen and heard over and over for many generations. Giving others a glimpse of what I have learned while on my journey so that they may take my soul vision inward and become aware of what their own soul is trying to express to them rather than remaining stuck in the soul gestational period. My soul vision is to express to all daughters what love and marriage is, by discovering, awakening, and strengthen your own soul, your partner soul and your marriage soul so that no one relives the type of first marriage I had. I cant think of a better way to do this then through writing, because what good would it do anyone if it remained inside of me and I didnt express it? I encourage you; no, Im nudging you, to express your souls voice by writing!

Take a Leap of Faith!

Reading and writing allows me to express my innermost thoughts, gain useful knowledge and more importantly practice self-care. Its like Oprah says when you know better you do better So I choose to speak from the heart and share what I know to be true with the world. Im writing a book about adversity to help others find the strength and courage to overcome lifes obstacles. Growing up with my own struggles, I understand first-hand the value of learning from the challenges we face and coming out stronger on the other side. Its exciting to share my message because it fulfills my lifes purpose to transform lives and promote positive self-images. If you have your own important message to share, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith. Turn off the inner critic and let the wisdom within you do all the work. Think about how it will feel to be a published author and marinate in that for a while. The best reward of writing a book is the feedback you receive when someones life has been changed by your message. The hope youve given someone when they needed it most.

Expression Without Limits

Ever since I was a little girl, words fascinated me. I remember the first moment I learned to write my name: I held the pencil in my left hand and the teacher made me put it in my right hand. Since that day, I had trouble with penmanship. When I was able to, I used a typewriter to express myself. I loved the clean letters and the way they seemed to magically appear on the pages. However, the mistakes made meant many do-overs and wasted paper. It interfered with my creative flow. Then came the word-processor and it was love at first sight. I could finally embrace my ambidextrousness. Writing for me has been a form of expression without limits. I have kept a journal for 40 years. It has been my therapy to write my feelings unedited. My outlet for inspirational and creative ideas. My channel for communication with the Divine. Through writing I can be anyone, say anything and create worlds. The words bring my dreams to life. I am often amazed at what comes through when I let myself go, unedited. Writing gives voice to my visions and dreams. It is truly my love affair. Why am I writing this book? For several reasons: I have always wanted to write a book Donnas Write a Book in a Weekend workshop was a compelling invitation at just the right time and I could not refuse. I want to add credibility to my knowledge and life work I know this will help my prospects and clients I like the idea of a book as my Big Business Card. This topic is what wanted to come through me. I answered the call. To be a published author is part of my destiny path. This is going to give me confidence to publish more of my works.

Most important, I want my daughter, also a talented writer, to have an example of what is possible. If you even have had a thought or an inspiration or even a consideration about writing, just do it! It is one of the most liberating, empowering, and creative forms of expression that honors the gift of who you are in the form of information, knowledge or story that comes through you. You owe it to yourself. If you cant do it for yourself, then think on how you can give the gift of your writing to another. Dont hold back. Jump in now! Waiting is just delaying the inevitable. Do your dream. Write!

Speak Up & Share Your Voice!

I write because I must. I have a need deep inside my soul to express myself and share my thoughts, feelings, ideas, songs and stories. I love to create! I was inspired to write the book The Path after I wrote a song by the same name. The song is about the Passion of Christ, but symbolically, its about me rediscovering my own path and having the faith and courage to walk it. It is my hope that through the telling of my story, I may inspire and help others to do the same. It feels great to finally be sharing my message. I truly hope and believe something good will result from the telling of it. And I encourage anyone wanting to write a book to do it. Speak up and share your voice! The world is waiting to hear you!

Reach Out in a Different Direction

After writing a blog for over 18 months and being encouraged by my husband, clients and blog followers, I finally got off the fence and made the decision to write a book because I am passionate about helping others achieve their goals of improving their health. Instead of one on one and group coaching, I felt that by writing, I could reach out in a different direction to share with others ways to reduce their stress, lose weight, and turn back their inner clock so they can improve their overall health in ways that they can see, feel and measureyounger, energetic and more vibrant. We all have conversations on a regular basis and changing our form of communication from words that are spoken and heard, by writing, we are simply writing them down so they can be read. If you are on the fence, get off and just start writing.

Why Do I Write?
Theres something sacred to me about helping someone grow. This is why Ive been coaching for fifteen years and its why Ive begun to write. What a privilege to get to be of service in this way! I remember the first time I opened my inbox and found an email from a woman thanking me for something I wrote. She didnt just thank me, she shared how one particular paragraph caught her attention and changed the way she lives her life. It was both humbling and gratifying. Even though I wasnt writing to her, specifically, this experience was personal for us both. So why do I choose to write? I write to discover I write to share I write to explore I write to wonder I write to express I write to create I write to teach I write to learn I write to inspire I write because its fun I write because its hard I write to be challenged I write to grow I write to facilitate my readers growth I write to offer hope

Always Room for Solutions

Writing in the service of others is an act of courage and generosity. The spoken word can fade away and be forgotten, but what you write lasts just as you put it down. Your words can be weighed, critiqued, even judged, but if they can help the reader, it is worth setting your fears aside and writing anyway. Secret Treasures Within You

Writing is sharing threads of the tapestry of my soul. For me, its the conductors baton movement with the musicians, the painters brush upon canvas, the singers modulation of breath, tone and palate with her song. Writing always implies relationship with the reader that is both intimate and transpersonal. It allows me to reveal the nuances of my creative sound, my word, that then reverberates with each and every reader, leading to a meeting that leaves both of us changed in some way. Writing is an opportunity for me to touch and move with another through shape, tone, imagery, and rhythm of words. It invites me to bring forward what is within me in such a way wherein both writer and reader may get worked and reshaped in some way that can open a space for both of us to become more of who we are. If you are feeling the urge to write a book, even if just a little, take heed. Listen, find a way to take your first act, then your next. If resistance comes up, welcome it and then work with it, for it tells of secret treasures within you that are waiting to be found and opened.

Message Too Big to Keep to Myself

I think Ive wanted to write a book for as long as Ive been reading. I wrote little stories on scratch paper in grade school, and I creating tiny handwritten books bound by tape and staples, and illustrated by my best friend. When the mood struck, I had to stop what I was doing and write the words. Once I had done so I could go about my day (and sadly, throw the written work away). Ive realized that the message Im sharing now is too big to keep to myself, and I know it wont let me rest until I act on it. Ive held myself back for fear that I am not enough of an expert, but the truth is that nobody else has my view of the world or my life experiences, and the message is too important not to be shared. For me, that is the power of writing. Even as I write the words, I feel my inner voice grow stronger and more assured.

What Are You Waiting For?

I am writing a book because it has been a life-long goal of mine. I began writing short stories in high school and Ive always loved writing and reading (yes, I was an English geek in high school!). I have always known that I would write a book one day, I just didnt know what the topic would be. I think that writing a book is a brilliant way to get your message out in the world, while at the same time building your credibility and visibility as an expert in your field. It gives you a platform for speaking and for promoting your other products and services. With all the improvements in technology, its easier than ever to publish a book. You can have a book up on Amazon Kindle within a matter of hours! So, if you are thinking about writing a book, my question for you would be What are you waiting for? Its actually a lot easier than you might think, especially if you have already been writing articles or blog posts for your business. Its simply a matter of organizing the material and piecing it together. It can really be done in a weekend!

Advance Personal Growth and Emotional Healing

I have always known the power of journaling from the time I was a young girl writing in my flower-covered diary with its key to lock it up from prying eyes. I would allow all my feelings, observations and ideas to flow onto the page with the instinctual knowledge that it was somehow good and helpful to write things down. Fast forward to my life as an adult and I can look back over the past 25 years of my adult life and see that writing was one of my favorite tools to advance my personal growth and my emotional healing. It made sense to start writing a book about my personal and professional experiences using Expressive Arts Therapy to spark healing and personal growth. Writing about this topic, which is so near and dear to my heart, has been clarifying, frustrating, exhilarating and fun. If you are trying to decide whether to write a book, my advice is, Go for it! Start writing and see what flows out on to the page. You can always refine and revise it, but youve got to start somewhere. It will amaze you just how much you can write once you let go of the outcome and enjoy the process.

Put Pencil to Paper

I write to express my souls truth. I love doing this as I am always surprised at what flows forth from the annals of my mind. I read for inspiration and relaxation. Whether Im creating words of wisdom that guide, inspire and teach or meditations to relax and empower your inner vision, I am in my element. Its like floating in a bubble of healing and rejuvenating energies. I am truly at my best when I can spend some time each day writing. If youre on the fence about writing a book, Id tell you not to worry about its content, just sit down and put pencil to paper. There is something healing about using pencil and paper to write your story. (I have an easier time writing with these archaic tools than I do with electronic media.) And dont worry about the words, they will come, as we all have at least one good story to share with the world!

Persistence Does Pay Off

It truly is just sitting down and getting started. Avoiding distractions and defeating the constant battle of Is what I have to say really important to anyone else, or can I write well enough for anyone to want to read it? But then I would remember hearing these words from Donna, Set your timer for 45 minutes and keep your butt in the seat and keep writing, it will begin to flow and someone out there is waiting for what you are writing. Persistence does pay off. I got to the point of hauling everything out of the closet, as Donna says; I put a few things back, got rid of a few things, but was completely stuck at the organization of what was left. Writing, thinking, persistence, more writing, more thinking and keeping my butt in the seat paid off, my a-ha came and out poured the power outline. So stick with it, it will come and what you have to say needs to be read.

I Yearn to Write Real Books

For me it began when I was nine and I created Wally, the Worm, a book for my little brother. The creative voice that was in me then still resides in me now. Yes, life has been full and the years have quieted her, but there are still days when she swings wildly in my mind. As a teenager I wrote to sort out my feelings. Writing helped me deal with a friends suicide. In college I wrote more childrens stories. By writing I was able to successfully navigate through job losses, being alone, moving across the country and divorce. Later in life, my writing captured my lifes joys with gratitude. All this time, I yearned to write books, real books. Books of substance that would help others on their journey. Now, I have done that and my creative muse is free. Writing is my way to leave my fingerprints on the world.
