HSUSmadezerodonationstoOhiopetsheltersin2007and2008andgavejust$5,200in 2006.Thisyear,however,theorganizationisgearinguptospendmillionsofdollarsinOhioon theantilivestockfarmingballotinitiative.

$19permonthtranslatesto$228peryearandofthat$228totalsum,$1.03wouldhave reachedtheactualhandsonanimalshelter.Bycomparison,HSUShad555employeesand paidthem$37.8millionin2008.Thisincludesover$2.5millioncontributedtoemployeepension plans.TheHSUSchiefexecutive,WaynePacelle,madejustover$251,000insalaryand benefits. TheworkwaspublishedintheJournaloftheAmericanVeterinaryMedicalAssociationonAugust 1,andiscorroboratedinanotherstudyreportedintheAugust15issueoftheJournal.Patronek andhisPurdueUniversitycolleaguesconcludedthatdogownerswhopaymorethan$100fora dog,takehimtoaveterinarianmorethanonceayear,andparticipateinobedienceclassesare

morelikelytoprovidealongtermhomefortheanimal. Veterinarycareandobedienceclassesmayreinforcethebondingofpetandowner,the researcherswrote"...byallowingtheownertoexperienceandappreciatethepositiveaspects ofpetownershipsuchascompanionship,affection,entertainment,andsecuritywithout overreactingtoorbeingdistractedbydisruptiveorunwantedbehaviour." Theirconclusionschallengetheassertionsofactiviststhatbreedersdirectlyandindirectly producean"overpopulation"ofpetsandprovidetestimonyforearlyinterventionthrough education,asolutionthatbreeders,breedclubs,kennelclubs,andtheAmericanKennelClub havepromotedforyears. Thenumbers TheresearchwasdoneattheHumaneSocietyofStJoseph,Mishawaka,Indiana.Theteam compiledseparateinformationfordogsandcatstheyinterviewed380peoplewhosurrendered theirdogsforadoptionand905ownerswhokepttheiranimals.Thecontrolgroupwaschosen fromarandomsampleofdogowningStJosephCountyresidents. Fiftyfourpercentofthedogssurrenderedweresixmonthstothreeyearsoldand15 percentwerelessthansixmonthsold.(Thestudyincludedonlyacquireddogs,not surrenderedlitters.) Fiftyonepercentofdogssurrenderedhadbeenpurchasedforlessthan$100froma breederorprivateowner.Nearlyninepercentfromtheseprivatesourcescostmorethan $1002.5percentcamefrompetstoresand3.9percentfromlittersproducedinthe home. Nearly20percentofthesurrendereddogscamefromashelter,andaboutthesame numberwereacquiredasstrays. Nearly41percentofthesurrendereddogswereobtainedfreefromthepreviousowner. Behaviourproblemsoccurringdailythatcontributedtosurrenderwere: Barking,41percent Chewing,24percent Hyperactivity,45percent Housetrainingaccidents,21percent Aggressiontootherpets,lessthaneightpercent Aggressiontopeople,lessthanninepercent.

Conclusions *Purebredpetsareatlowerriskofsurrendertosheltersthanmixedbreeds,anddogs

purchasedformorethan$100havethelowestriskfactorsofall. *Dogslessthantwoyearsoldareathighestriskforabandonment,especiallyiftheyaremixed breed,unneutered,liveinafamilywithchildren,orrequiremorecareorattentionthanthe ownersexpectedwhentheyobtainedtheanimal. *Dogsacquiredbetweentheagesofoneandtwoyearsareathigherriskforabandonmentthan puppies,perhapsbecausetheycametotheirnewownerswithestablishedbehaviorproblems. *Dogsthatareadoptedfromashelterareatrelativelyhighriskofreturn,leadingtotheideathat behaviourcounsellingprogrammesatsheltersshouldbeevaluatedtodeterminetheir effectiveness. *Dogsthatspendmostoftheirtimeseparatedfromthefamily,eitherincratesorintheyard,are atgreaterrisk.Thisdiscoveryshouldwarnobedienceinstructors,shelterstaffs,and veterinarianswhorecommendtheuseofacratethattheymustprovideclearinformationonits properuse. *Dogsthatvisittheveterinarianmorethanonceayearandthosethatattendobedienceclasses thebestplacestogeteducationalinformationonbehaviouraremorelikelytoremainintheir originalhomes.Curiously,thediscoverythatincreasedveterinaryvisitscaninfluenceadog's longevityinthehomecomesatatimewhenthetrendistowardsfewervisits,notmore.
