A Lenape Regional High
School Board of Education mem-
ber who has had his roots in the
district his entire life was chosen
as its president last week.
David Stow was unanimously
voted to serve as the Board of Ed-
ucation president at the boards
reorganization meeting. Stow
takes over for Ted Shinske. He
had served as the boards vice
president in 2013.
Stow has been a part of the
Lenape district going back to his
days as a student at Lenape High
School in the 1970s. Stow now
lives and represents Medford on
the board, and nothing makes
him more proud than serving on
the districts Board of Education.
Im proud to be a member of
this board, he said. We have one
of the best school districts in this
state.
During his acceptance speech
to the large crowd gathered at the
districts administration building
in Shamong, Stow rattled off the
names of many teachers. These

The new year brought a new
mayor to Tabernacle Township,
as Joseph Barton was sworn in at
the township committees annual
reorganization meeting on Jan. 2.
I look at reorganization meet-
ings as a time of gladness and a
time of gratitude, Barton said.
I look forward to the challenges.
We moved here in 1979, and my
father thought we were crazy be-
cause he lived in Philadelphia
and my mother was from Cam-
den, but its a great town. Its the
best kept secret in New Jersey.
Barton credited his wife, two
sons and grandchildren for allow-
ing him to be where he is now.
I thank my family, I love them
dearly, Barton said.
Stephen Lee, who served as the
townships mayor in 2013, will
serve as the deputy mayor in
2014.
Its been an honor and a privi-
lege to serve as mayor in 2013, Im
very proud of the work weve
done in 2013, Lee said. I know

Board told of unannounced lockdown
drills held at high schools for first time
were the teachers Stow had dat-
ing all the way back to kinder-
garten and through his entire ca-
reer at Lenape.
All of these people have dedi-
cated their lives, he said. Not
for fame and certainly not for for-
tune. These people have dedicated
their lives to young people.
With Stow moving up to presi-
dent, the board unanimously
elected Linda Eckenhoff to take
over as vice president. The board
also made board and professional
appointments during the reor-
ganization portion of the meet-
ing.
In other news:
Seneca High School's Iron
Devils Robotics Team received
two donations that were approved
by the board last week. One dona-
tion was from Lockheed Martin
for $3,000. The second was from
Insight Insurance Group for
$1,000. Stow said he is continual-
ly amazed at how generous busi-
nesses and groups have been in
contributing to programs in the
school district.
It is truly amazing how much
the community supports us, he
said.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm informed the board that
unannounced lockdown drills
were held at the high schools for
the first time. The school district
worked with the respective local
authorities in conducting the
drills. She said having unan-
nounced drills allowed school ad-
ministration and local authori-
ties to better assess school securi-
ty and safety, something she em-
phasized as a priority in the dis-
trict.
Birnbohm had praise for the
choirs at each of the districts
four high schools for their work
during the holiday season. All of
the school choirs performed
throughout their communities
during December.
We received numerous letters
of gratitude for their service,
she said.
Birnbohm also praised the
school board for its service dur-
ing her report. January is New
Jersey School Board Recognition
month.
The next Lenape Regional
High School District Board of Ed-
ucation meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in
the district administration at 93

and Im looking forward to serv-
ing and working with Joe and the
rest of the committee.
Barton took time to recognize
the rest of the committee as well
as the township staff.
Doug, youre the pillar of the
township. The guy we always go
to, Barton said to township ad-
ministrator Doug Cramer. I
thank the rest of the committee,
and I look forward to working
with them. They are committed
to working hard for the town-
ship.
Committeewoman Kim Brown
nominated both Barton and Lee
to their respective positions,
and both were unanimously
voted in.
Township solicitor Peter
Lange swore in Committeemen
Joseph Yates and Lee, who both
ran unopposed in Novembers
election.
We had a very interesting
2013, Yates said. We still have a
few things on the table that are
ongoing into this year. I think
Stephen did a wonderful job as
mayor, and I know Joe will as
well.
In other news:
Lange and the Alaimo
Group will remain the town-
ships solicitor and engineer, re-
spectively.
It is a valued privilege
to serve, very much my privi-
lege, Lange said. I appreciate
the confidence you demonstrate
in me every year to continue to
do the job and work with a
great group of people and a ter-
rific town. I very much appreci-
ate it.
Lynne Hedden was appointed
president of the Tabernacle Ath-
letic Association. She will serve a
one-year term that will expire
Dec. 31.
The township will hold its
next meeting on Monday, Jan. 27
at 8 p.m. in town hall.

the Burlington County Librarys used book
sale scheduled for Feb. 6 to Feb. 9 at library
headquarters in Westampton.
A wide variety of books will be available
in the librarys meeting room, including
fiction and nonfiction for children and
adults, as well as books on tape, CDs and
DVDs. A preview sale for Friends members
only will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 4
to 6 p.m., and the public will be invited to
shop that day from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The public
will also be able to pick up a few bargains
on: Friday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.;
Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and
Sunday, Feb. 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Stock up on: childrens books for 50 cents
and $1 each; pocket paperbacks for 50 cents
each; trade paperbacks for $1 each; hard-
back books for $1 each; DVDs for $2 each;
and CDs for $1 each. In addition, special
art, coffee table and other oversized books
will be available for $2.50 to $5 each. There
will also be a limited number of individu-
ally-priced books. All proceeds benefit li-
brary programming.
The county library is located on Pioneer
Boulevard off Woodlane Road in Westamp-

Burlington County Library to host used book sale

verall, New Jerseys schools
are excellent. Thats not in
question. A recent study
ranked New Jersey second in the na-
tion in student achievement and
chance for success.
Thats impressive.
The Garden State ranked second on
The Quality Counts report, which the
publisher of Education Week con-
ducts. Only Massachusetts ranked
higher than New Jersey in the Chance
for Success Index, which measures the
role of education in an individuals
life.
The states B+ grade was much high-
er than the national average of C+, and
also bested the grade for nearby states
Maryland (B), Pennsylvania (B),
Delaware (B-) and New York (B-).
Yay for us.
With every positive seems to come a
negative, though, or, in this case, an
area in need of improvement.
The same Quality Counts report
ranked New Jersey below average in
the categories of standards, assess-
ments and accountability (C 44th
overall) and teaching profession (D+ -
38th).
It has been widely reported, both
here and elsewhere, that our school
districts are actively working to im-
prove their accountability and assess-
ments, so lets leave that one alone for
now. The concerning aspect of this
study is, without a doubt, the teaching
profession.
According to the report, New Jersey
has no incentives for teachers or prin-
cipals working in hard-to-staff disci-
plines or schools, no salary parity with
other occupations, and no financial in-
centives for teachers to earn national
certifications.
This needs to change.
As we wrote some time ago, our stu-
dents and, therefore, our schools are
only as good as the teachers and ad-
ministrators we hire; ergo, we need to
ensure that our teachers and adminis-
trators are not only well qualified at
the time of hiring but are also incen-
tivized to grow professionally within
our system as well.
Our schools are great now, but lets
make sure they continue to be great.
Lets find a way to incentivize our
teachers and administrators to work in
difficult subjects, in difficult schools
and earn bigger and better certifica-
tions.
Our students are the ones who will
benefit the most.
