PROBLEM 12:- Determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft which will transmit 90kW at 160r.p.m. Also determine the length of the shaft if the twist must not exceed 10 over the entire length. (Answer: -D=76.8mm, L=893.6mm) PROBLEM 13:- Determine the diameter of a solid shaft which will transmit 300kW at 250r.p.m. The maximum shear stress should not exceed 30N/mm2 and twist should not be more than 10 in a shaft length of 2m. (Answer: - 81mm) PROBLEM 16:- A hollow shaft, having an internal diameter 40% of its external diameter, transmits 562.5kW power at 100r.p.m. Determine the external diameter of the shaft if the shear stress is not to exceed 60N/mm2 and the twist in a length of 2.5m should not exceed 1.3 degrees. Assume maximum torque=1.25 mean torque and modulus of rigidity = N/mm2. (Answer: -180mm, greater of the two values)

PROBLEM 17:- Two shafts are connected end to end by means of a flanged coupling in which there are 12 bolts, the pitch circle diameter being 25cm. The maximum shear stress is limited to 55N/mm2 in the shafts and 20N/mm2 in the bolts. If one shaft is solid of 5cm diameter and the other is hollow of 10cm external diameter, calculate the internal diameter of the hollow shaft and the bolt diameter so that both shafts and the coupling are equally strong in torsion. (Answer: -Di=96.72mm) PROBLEM 18:- A shaft is to be fitted with a flanged coupling having 8 bolts on a circle of diameter 150mm. The shaft may be subjected to either a direct tensile load of 400kN or a twisting moment of 18kNm. If the maximum direct and shearing stresses permissible in the bolt material are 125N/mm2 and 55N/mm2 respectively, find the minimum diameter of the bolt required. Assume that each bolt takes an equal share of the load or torque. (Answer: -26.35mm) PROBLEM 19:- A shaft ABC of 500mm length and 40mm external diameter is bored, for a part of its length AB, to a 20mm diameter and for the remaining length BC to a 30mm diameter bore. If the shear stress is not to exceed 80N/mm2, find the maximum power, the shaft can transmit at a speed of 200r.p.m. If the angle of twist in the length of 20mm diameter bore is equal to that in the 30mm diameter bore, find the length of the shaft that has been bored to 20mm and 30mm diameter.

PROBLEM 21:- A hollow shaft 1m long and has external diameter 50mm. It has 20mm internal diameter for a part of the length and 30mm internal diameter for the rest of the length. If the maximum shear stress in it is not to exceed 80N/mm2, determine the maximum power transmitted by it at a speed of 300r.p.m. If the twists produced in the two portions of the shafts are equal. Find the lengths of the two portions.
