Note :-

The origins of this translation

It is well known that Lord Vnkaeswara grew
disgusted with Vaikutham and came down to the holy
Thirupathi Hills in Bharata Vara. Later, out of his infinite
kindness towards those who left Bhrata Vara for various
reasons, he came to America to reside in many cites. Poets
have described these tours. Of the many such cities, He
very much liked the city which is at the confluence of three
rivers (Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio). This city is
Pittsburgh, P.A.

90

It that city, lives a devotee of Maha Periavaa called

Ravi Venkatraman. Through mutual friends, he approached
me for a translation of Maha Periavs namavali. While some
of the namvali were simple to translate, there were many
that need more preparation, knowledge and insight.
I learned that Shri S.V. Radhakrishna Shastri (SVR)
of srirangam who is close to Kanchi Matam would be able
to help me.
He cleared all my doubts and gave clear translation to
the ones I could not get. I also sought clarification with
S. Yegnasubramanian on Kundalini seats. J. Sethuraman.
1. Shri Chandrashekharendra Saraswathi followed the
67th Pontiff Shankaracharya, Shri Mahadevendra Saraswathi,
as the 68th Pontiff Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamamti
Peetam.

6. The six seats of Kualini, namely mldhram,
svdhinam, maiprakam, anhatam, visuddhi and
j, are well known in the standard and yogic literature.
For instance. See Lalit Sahasranmam 98-108. An
accomplished and dedicated yogi is able to raise the
kudalini akti through these six seats along the suuma
ndi which is between two other ndi's called i and
pigala.
In the commentary svacchandasagraha on yogic texts
like Patajali Yoga stra, there is mention of more yogic
mental states :

This talks of two Shiva seats (thousand petaled lotus
seats) called kula and akula one, below and the other, above

92

the six seats of kualini, which also are to be experienced

along the suuma ndi. The akula seat is also identified with
the brahmarandra ptham, which may be equated to the
sahasradalapadma pitham described in shlokas 109-110 1/2
of Lalita Sahasranmam.
Still more commentaries talk of more yogic seats
between j and akula brahmarandhra are listed as
(1) ardharandhra, (2) rodhini, (3) nda, (4) ndnta,
(5) akti, (6) vypik, (7) saman and (8) unmani. This
makes brahmarandhra the 16th seat.
The akula seats are called iva seats and the kula seats
are called sakti seats.

My Guru r Jayendra Sarasvat, who guides people

into dharmic ways by his honey-sweet words, who goes
on ytras from one place to another in the whole of India,
having discarded silence and the stay-put under banyan
tree (as does r Dakimrti), always resides in my heart.

Notes by J. Sethuraman
The author of this beautiful Namvali is Sri
S.V. Radhakrishna Shastri of Srirangam.
It was composed on the occasion of the Pihrohaa
of r Jayendra Saraswati after the Mahsamdhi of r
Mahsvmi in 1994. A later redaction with some additions
and deletions was made in 2001 after His Kilsa
mnasarvara Ytra.

3. This namavali equates and contrasts Swami Sri

in this famous shloka :

This Guru, Lord Dakshinamurti, is seated under a

banyan tree. His disciples are seated next to him. They
are all old men, but He is a young lad. His teaching
consists only of silence. Wonder of wonders! His disciples
have learned everything and all their doubts have been
removed.

Without the blessings of all the Sri Periyavaas, such

efforts at translation will not bear fruit. I place this at
their feet for the blessings.

everywhere, who is pure, eternal, supreme and immaculate,
who is of the nature of bliss always, who is the storehouse
of happiness, who bestows auspiciousness, who is selfradiant, who is a paramahamsa (highest ascetic
discriminating the ever-changing world from the nonchanging absolute), who is better than the best of the things
available and who is of the human form of Vedas and

which sits on the omkra throne controlling the three worlds,
which traverses on all the six cakrs mentioned in the Vedas
and the siddh literature, which is nothing but the nondual state of advait, which is pure, which is like a full
moon radiating consciousness and which brings tranquility.
The divine pair of sandals shines resplendently in front of

|| dhpa || (P. 37)

That which exists, that which is liked, because of which
the true perception of This is that occurs, that knowledge
is brahman, which is You (r Candraekhar). That
brahman shines by itself.
|| dpam || (P. 38)
Knowledge, the appearance of knowledge, and what is
known all are Brahman, which is You (r Candraekhar).
You are verily pure, the ruler of mantrs and very dear to
people.
|| prvpoanam || (P. 38)
He, who is r Candraekhar, is the god of death for all
sorrows. He is omniscient. He is the most omniscient among
all those who are omniscient. He is the first of all those
who are excellent.
|| phalam || (P. 40)
The doer of action, action (karm) itself, action ensuing
from ones duty (kryam), the consequent fruits because
of the preceding three all are Brahman. With the grace of
r Candraekhar, who is the var of all the mantrs,
everything becomes clear (to us).
|| karodvartanam || (P. 41)
I worship r Candraekhar, who is Brahman, who is the
veds and their meaning, who gives all auspiciousness

141

during our cycles of worldly existence, who is of the essence

of mantrs and who resides in all beings.
|| punardhpam || (P. 41)
r Candraekhar destroys all the hinderances in the
practice of yog. He gives the result for effortful action
(yog) and enjoyment. I worship Him, who is at the most
auspicious position and who blesses all that is good.
Oh Swami! Your feet are my sole refuge.
Let us get your daran always.
Let us get the blessing of chanting your name always.
Thinking about You gives auspiciousness.
Your daran gives a very sweet experience.
Your grace is very intense. (1)
Oh Swami! Your lls are extraordinary.
Your luster is cool and pleasant.
Your hands are very soft.
Your feet are very holy.
Our devotion to You is very natural.
Your touch gives us immense joy. (2)
Oh Swami! Serving You is very easy.
Your appearance is very attractive to our minds.
Your intentions are very friendly.
Listening to Your life history is very pleasing to our minds.

142

Singing Your glory is like an ambrosia for us.

You are immersed in Brahman without any effort. (3)
|| tblam || (P. 44)
He is beyond feelings. He is beyond any feeling of existence
and non-existence. He is rooted in the I exist and It does
not exist awareness. He is personified by sentience I
exist only. He is naturally engrossed in sentience I exist
without effort by leaving the feelings of existence and nonexistence. I worship that being You (r Candraekhar ),
who is pure, serene and auspicious.
|| daki || (P. 45)
That which is not manifested (Brahman) is perceived (as
perceivable universe). The manifesting agent (Brahman) is
not manifested. Since the visible universe (misconstrued to
be real because of my) and non-manifested Brahman both
are not perceived, Your appearance of Brahman as r
Candraekhar is very superior and very auspicious.
Purport: Human beings operate from the
vyavahrika (transactional) level of existence, where
universe, as a function of space and time, is
perceived well and Brahman is never perceived.
Since at the same vyavahrika level of existence, r
Candraekhar, who is the absolute non-perceivable
brahman is perceived by us, His form is that of
Ivar and hence very superior and auspicious.

143

|| mahvastram || (P. 46)

Even after knowing the object of perception and the process
of perception, that person (r Candraekhar) ,whose
position is not really perceived, is truly the knowledge
brahman. That brahman shines by itself.
Purport: In the vyavahrika (transactional) level of
existence, we use logic and deduction to know the
object of perception (Brahman) and the method
needed to get to brahman. However, unless that
knowledge dawns by itself, Brahman (which is the
knowledge) is never perceived. Here it is mentioned
that r Candraekhar, is the knowledge Himself.
|| mahnrjanam || (P. 46)
You (r Candraekhar) shine by yourself. That shine is
the form of the Self. You are the Self in everyone. You are
the most Supreme person. You are Brahman. You are the
effulgence in light. You always give auspiciousness.
|| pradakia namaskram || (P. 47)
I circumambulate sadguru (r Candraekhar) who
traverses the three worlds Bhlok, Bhuvarlok and
Suvarlok.
I worship r Candraekhara sadguru, by bowing down
my head, whose feet are worshipped by countless devs,
wearing exquisitely decorated crowns studded with

144

excellent gems, with their heads, and who removes the

fears and miseries of those who surrender to His feet.
|| mantrapupnjali || (P. 48)
r Candraekhar Guru- the lord of the mantrs, the king
of all the kings, the seed letter of the mantrs, one who gives
protection to the dependents, the powerful master, the first
among the supreme devs - You are everything. You are
the ruler of the universe. Your form is truth, knowledge,
bliss and most excellent auspiciousness. I worship You,
the king of mantrs and the seed of knowledge.
I worship You, r Candraekhar, who is auspicious at all
places, who is of the form of existence, knowledge and bliss,
who is not liable to any change, and who is the above the
ruler of devs. Please favour Your grace on me.
|| prrthankampaam || (P. 52)
My reverential worship to You, who is of divine nature,
who is Knowledge, who is of the essence of the mantrs,
and who is the deity r Candraekhar. My reverential
worship to You who is of the form of Datttrey,
Dakimrti and Parabrahma Svarpi.
I am sin, sinful action, the agent of sin and the result of sin.
Oh! r Candraekhara dev, the storehouse of love for those
who surrender unto You, please show Your compassion and
save me. There is no one else to give me refuge. You are my
only recourse. Hence, show me compassion and protect me.

145

By thinking and praying whom, all the deficiencies in

worship through pj and tapas are forgiven and
completed, I meditate on that Mah Viu. Oh! Ivar, if
there are any shortcomings and omissions in my prayers,
actions and devotion during this worship, let that still be
considered complete for you.
Let Bhagavn r Candraekhar, who is the Supreme person
in all the universes (visible universe and the other invisible
worlds for human beings), who is like the precious stone in
the jewel of Kmakoi Pham, who is like the hasa bird
wandering in the minds of ascetics, who is Nirgua
Brahman, be satisfied and be happy with this pj, consisting
of sixteen steps including meditation, done by me.
|| pryacitta mantri || (P. 55-61)
Oh! The Supreme Person r Nrya! If I have made a
mistake at a word or a letter, or during pronunciation, or if
I had changed the words or sentences either by lengthening
or shortening them, please forgive me for all the mistakes.
During this worship, I - an incomplete person, because of
lack of knowledge in mantrs, must have certainly
committed mistakes because of my shortcomings not
completely thinking about You or meditating on You, in
doing pj, in making You sit in the lotus of my heart, in
looking inward at You (in my heart) and stopping the
thought waves that pass through my mind. Oh!
compassionate one, r Candraekhar, please grace me
with Your compassion.

146

O Lord, whatever I have done through body, speech, mind,

five senses, intellect, soul, or unconscious natural impulses
- all that I dedicate as an offering unto Thee, r Nrya.
|| uttara pj || (P. 59)
I give arghyam of all my actions to r Candraekhar, who
gives auspiciousness, who is divine in nature, who is of
the form of brilliant light and who removes the miseries of
devotees.
I give arghyam of all my actions to r Candraekhar, who
is var with attributes, who is not visible to the eyes, who
is immersed in the state of non-dual self, who is the Nirgua
Brahman without attributes, and who is a Parabrahma
Svarpi.
I give arghyam of all my actions to r Candraekhar, who
is the seed for mok, who is completely liberated, and
who is the head of all those seeking liberation and who is
of the form existence, knowledge and bliss.
I offer my reverential worship to the lineage of gurus,
starting with r Sadiv, continuing with r Adi Sakar
and ending with r Jayendra Sarasvat and r Vijayendra
Sarasvat.

Sri Manikka Vinayagar Thunai! Sri Pazhani Andavar Thunai!

PUBLISHER'S NOTE
With the blessings of Jagadguru Paramahasa Parivrjakcrya
Pjya r Jayendra Sarasvat Svamiji and Jagadguru
Paramahasa Parivrjakcrya Pjya r Vijayendra Sarasvat
Svamiji of Kci Kmakoi Pham, we humbly present this
book to the devotees of our Kci Kmakoi Pham.
All of us feel very fortunate to have come into contact with the
Supreme Guru, Pjya r Candraekharendra Sarasvat Mah
Svmij, an incarnaion of vara, the Supreme Person. It is a
great blessing that the grace of the cryas of Kci fell on us;
we have been made an instrument on creating, compiling, and
presenting this book in a format usable for other devotees to
do r Sadguru Pj. For someone with no knoweldge in
languages Sasktam, Tamil and English, and with no great
organizational skills, we cannot but emphasize the result of
Guru's grace over our efforts.
This book gives the oaa Vidhna Pj for worshipping our
beloved Sadguru as Parabrahma Svarp. This worship is not
limited to any caste, gender or race. Anyone can use these
loks to worship Pjya r Maha Svamij. To make sure that
people get the correct pronunciation for chanting, we have
attached an audio version of the book. Pepole who do not
know how to chant veda mantrs correctly can chant Viu

x
Sahasranmam, Tamil Vedas or other loks during snnam
or Pduk abhiekam. However, those who know to chant veda
mantrs correctly can add Purua Skta mantr for upacr,
and r Rudram during Pduk abhiekam along with the loks
in the book.
It is our experience that by worshipping Pjya r Maha Svamij
this way, one will be blessed with health, wealth, good family
and more importantly spiritual knowledge. We will also be
finally liberated from sasr cycle by His grace. We hope
that all devotees will use this opportunity to take refuge in the
Holy feet of the Supreme Guru and be benefited every way.
For some of us, His Holiness is Kmki, for some others He
is iv, and to some others He is Nrya and Datttrey and
so on... Being the impersonal Parabhrahma Svarp appearing
in human form, He lives in the hearts of the smallest organisms
as well as the mightiest devs, controlling all the activities in
the universe.
We intend to pass on any donations from devotees for the
preservation of veda phals running through various trusts
founded by Kmakoi Pham. Please send all your comments
to "sri.sadguru.puja@gmail.com'.
Ever seeking to serve the Guru Parapar of Kci Kmakoi
Pham.
Ravi Venkatraman
