COURSE INFORMATION

Agenda
This course will provide an introduction to depositional processes and sedimentary facies as well as sequence stratigraphy. Understanding of sedimentary processes, facies model and depositional environments is crucial to the exploration and development of petroleum resources because sedimentology defines the location, quality and efficiency of source, reservoir and seal rocks. Sedimentary facies are also controlled by eustatic sea level fluctuation, tectonics, and sediment supply rate. In this course, we will study both clastic and carbonate sedimentology as well as sequence stratigraphy. After the lecture of clastic sedimentology and facies model, students will have a fieldwork in Miocene Pohang Basin, where we can see clastic sediments deposited in various depositional environments (alluvial fan to deep marine).

Course Content
Weathering and Erosion. Sedimentary Processes and Sedimentary Structures Facies Model of Alluvial Fan, Fluvial, Lake, Clastic Shore Line and Deep Sea Field Work in Miocene Pohang Basin Carbonate Facies and Depositional Environments Diagenesis in Carbonate Rocks Clastic and Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy Reservoir Related Sedimentology

Course Requirements
This course is ideally suited for geoscientists wishing to learn about the sedimentary processes and facies model. This lecture program provides profound understanding of sedimentological nature and stratigraphic characteristics of carbonate rocks. This course is also helpful for petroleum geologists who want to know details of source, reservoir, and seal rocks. To have a fieldwork in Pohang Basin, students should wear warm clothes and outdoor shoes, because December in Korea is very cold (-2 - 5oC) and we should climb up the mountains and valleys. Long neck boots are preferred. Participants should have knowledge of geosciences and experience on oil and gas projects.

Topic 1. Clastic Sedimentology and Facies Model

This topic provides an overview of depositional processes and sedimentary structures as well as facies model of distinctive depositional environments. By the end of this topic, participant can be able to understand the following:

Day 1. Sedimentary Processes and Sedimentary Structure

Fluid mechanics of current, wave, tide and sediment gravity flows. Sedimentary structures deposited by various depositional processes. Facies model for various depositional environments.

o Reservoir related sedimentology o Weathering and Erosion o Fluid mechanics of currents and related sedimentary structures o Fluid mechanics of wave/tide and related sedimentary structures o Fluid mechanics of sediment gravity flows and related sedimentary structures o Facies model of alluvial fan and fluvial environment Day 2. Facies model o Facies model of delta, lake, wave dominated shoreline, tide dominated shore line and deep sea fan o Introduction to Fieldwork

Topic 2. Fieldwork in Miocene Pohang Basin Sedimentary sequence in the Miocene Pohang Basin was deposited by six coalescing fan delta systems, controlled by tectonic subsidence and sediment supply rate. Among the fan deltas participants will visit the Doumsan Fan Delta, represented by largescale Gilberttype topset, foreset and bottomset. Here, participants can observe typical alluvial fan, fluvial, shallow marine, delta, foreset, slope channel and lobe, as well as deep water deposits within short distance. The fieldwork course also includes a schedule of culture tour visiting to Gyeongju City. This city was an old capital city of Korea during the Silla Dynasty (57BC to 935AD) and the participants can enjoy many cultural assets.

About the instructor

Dr In Gul Hwang is the principal researcher in Petroleum and Marine Division, KIGAM, and professor of University of Science and Technology. He studied sedimentology and genetic sequence stratigraphy of fan delta systems in Miocene Pohang Basin based on fieldwork. After he joined KIGAM, he acted as a petroleum geologist. He is also interested in seismic interpretation, assessment of petroleum resources and economics. Hwang consulted with government and many Korean private companies, investing overseas petroleum assets. He is, now, teaching students in University of Science and Technology and has many fieldwork lecture courses such as Pohang Basin, Gyeongsang Basin, Gyeokpo and Wido Basins. Students from other universities as well as petroleum geologists and engineers from many companies enjoyed his fieldwork lecture course. Dr. SukJoo Choh is an associate professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Korea University. Dr. Choh studied carbonate rocks at the University of Texas at Austin, where he specialized in constituents and depositional environments of the Carboniferous algal buildups which are potential reservoir facies in the subsurface of southwestern United States and Kazakhstan. He is also interested in application of information technology toward geoscience education and coauthored AAPG digital publications of sandstone tutorial (Milliken et al., 2007) and carbonate petrology tutorial (Milliken and Choh, 2011). Dr. Choh and his colleagues are currently pursuing early Phanerozoic (CambrianOrdovician) reef development patterns around the western margin of Gondwana supercontinent from the Taebaeksan basin of Korea, Yushan area of South China and near Xian of western China. Dr. Yi Kyun Kwon is an associate professor of Department of Geo Environmental Sciences at the Kongju National University. Dr. Kwon specialized in sedimentology and stratigraphy in carbonate rocks, and seismic stratigraphy in East Sea, Korea. Recently he expanded his research topic to petroleum geology, especially oil sand geology, and to geology of carbon storage. He is now teaching about sedimentology and stratigraphy as well as petroleum geology, including sequence stratigraphy. His current major research topics are (1) site selection for carbon storage and geological characterization of storage formations in Korea, and (2) refinement of sequence stratigraphy and paleogeographic reconstruction of the Lower Paleozoic carbonate platform sequences.
