M1
M2

GIVEN DATA:
M1 = 10kg.
M2 = 5kg.
Ө = 60°
μ = 0.10

REQUIRED:
1. tension when the body is sliding down from rest
2. acceleration
SOLUTION:

Downward acceleration

T
M1 Ff
Wx W Wy

Wx

EQUATIONS:

Wx = m*g *Sin Ө

Wy = m*g *Cos Ө

Wy = N

N = m*g *Cos Ө

Ff = μN or Ff = μ (m*g *Cos Ө)

T = Tension or force

COMPUTATION:

Since the object is going down the incline, from F = Ma;

- -
Wx Ff F = Ma
- -
m*g *Sin Ө μ (m*g *Cos Ө) T = 10a
- -
10*9.8*Sin 60° .10(10*9.8*Cos 60°) T = 10a
- -
84.87048957 4.9 T=10a
79.97048957-T=10a  equation 1

Upward acceleration

M2

Object is moving up, from F=Ma;

T – W = Ma
T - mg = Ma
T- 5*9.8 = 5a
T – 49 = 5a  equation 2

Add equation 1 & 2 to get the acceleration;

-
(79.97048957 T) + (T – 49) = 10a + 5a

30.97048957 = 15a

a = 30.97048957
15a

a = 2.064699305 m/s2
Plug in a to equation no. 2 to get the tension

T – 49 = 5a  equation 2

T – 49 = 5*2.064699305 m/s2

T-49=10.32349652

T = 10.32349652 + 49

T = 59.32349652 N

TENSION in mass 1 is lesser than the weight since object is accelerating downhill.
TENSION in mass 2 is greater since the object is accelerating upward.

DATA: REQUIRED: tension when μk = .2

M1 = 15 kg
μk = .2
Ө = 20°

EQUATIONS:

Ty = m*g*Cos Ө
Tx = m*g*Sin Ө
T = mg
Fk = μ (m*g *Cos Ө)
W = m*g

Summation of vertical Forces:

N+ Ty-W = 0
N = W-Ty
N = mg - TCos 20
N = 15*9.8 – TCos 20
N = 147-0.32020143T  Normal force

Summation of Horizontal Forces

Tx - Fk=0

Tx = Fk

T Sin Ө = μkN

T Sin20 = 0.2*( 147-0.32020143T )

0.93969265T = 29.4-0.068404028T

0.93969265T + 0.068404028T = 29.4

T = 29.4
0.93969265 + 0.068404028

T=29.163 N
