Drug Charges
Andrew K. Davis, 35, and his
brother, 23-year-old Kemar Davis,
are each charged with leading a
drug trafficking network.
A Jamaican dancehall DJ who
also records under the name
Flippa Mafia, Andrew Davis
lives in Kingston, Jamaica, but
formerly resided in Swedesboro.
Kemar lives in Hollywood,
California and goes by the name
Kemar Mafia.
The other 13 defendants in
the case are charged with conspir-
acy to distribute cocaine and laun-
der money.
Authorities in the case said
the investigation, dubbed
"Operation Next Day Air," began
in March 2011 and uncovered that
Flippa Mafia and his brother were
leading the large scale operation
from various locations in Jamaica
and New Jersey.
Prosecutors have stated that
the ring used the postal service and
other delivery systems to ship
cocaine from California to New
Jersey.
The scheme came to light
after detectives in Camden and the
Burlington County Prosecutor's
Office intercepted a shipment.
Authorities said more than 26 kilo-
grams of cocaine, worth
US$780,000, two handguns and
US$600,000 cash were seized as
part of the operation.
The state Attorney General's
Office will prosecute those indict-
ed.

A
large number of American
men have already been
arrested by the time they're in
their early 20s, according to a
new report.
The study, published on
Monday in the journal Crime &
Delinquency, found that nearly
half (49 percent) of African-
American men and 40 percent of
white men have been arrested by
the age of 23, "which can hurt
their ability to find work, go to
school and participate fully in
their communities," according to a
press release.
The research was based on an
analysis of national survey data
from 1997 to 2008 of teenagers
and young adults. The arrests
included minor crimes like truan-
cy as well as serious violent
crimes. It excluded traffic offens-
es.

I
t is a New Year and many of us want to
start out on the right track. Improving
our financial situation is one of the most
important tasks for the new year.
Whether you are an experienced busi-
ness owner or want to make some cash on
the side, you need to be careful.
Be careful of what, you might ask?
Be careful of solicitors asking you to
spend your money on what they believe to
be a good venture.
One thing we all have in common is
our fair share of regrettable decisions
regarding investments.
Scenario: Robert, a real estate broker,
is looking for investors for a deal that he is
sure will make a profit. He approaches you
to invest in this deal. According to him,
you will make double your money in six
months. You have the money but no
knowledge of real estate. You know Robert
and trust that he would not lose your
money.
Before you invest your money, please
follow these steps:
Gut Instincts:Sometimes, when you
think you're guessing, your brain may
actually know better. Studies conducted
showed that some gut feelings are not just
guesswork.
Your instincts can often provide a
very valuable gut check. If it doesnt feel
right, it probably isnt right.
Data: Raw data is comprised of dis-
parate facts, statistics, or random inputs
that in-and-of-themselves hold little value.
According to Patrick Maitland, if it
does not look good on paper dont move
forward with the project.
Do a budget, and assess the
Risk/Reward Ratio.
Information:Information is simply
more complete data. Information comes
from a collection of processed data where
context and meaning have been added to
disparate facts which allow for a more
thorough analysis. Simply do your home-
work.
Knowledge: What background, education,
or street knowledge do you have for this
type of business?
Credibility: What is the track record
of your source? Is the source reliable and
credible?We all want financial freedom,
but at what cost or risk? Please take the
time and plan so you can be a good deci-
sion maker.
Be smart about your investment deals
before a Robert makes you lose your life
savings.
If you have any other advice and/or
suggestions about how to make better
decisions, please share them.

W
e dont normally comment on the
editorial decisions of our competi-
tors or professional colleagues but it is our
opinion that the New York Post, the sister
publication of Caribbean Life, violated
journalistic ethics in its edition of January
5, 2014.
The New York Post front page fea-
tured a picture of the murdered 39-year-
old Brooklyn businessman Menachem
Max Stark next to the headline, Who
didnt want him dead?
Mr. Stark was kidnapped and his
body was later found burned in a Nassau
County dumpster. The body was still
smoldering from the waist down when it
was discovered.
However, the New York Posts poor-
ly written news story was laden with the
writers opinions and claimed that the
murder victim was a crooked slumlord
with many enemies and several debtors.
The writers played down the most
important factual elements of the story
which was that a man was murdered and
the killer or killers are still at large.
We agree with Brooklyn Borough
President Eric Adams, members of the
Jewish community and several other local
elected officials that the New York Post
headline is a betrayal of the journalistic
integrity that its readership deserves.
The New York Posts headline is not
just insensitive, it is sending a signal to
the criminal elements in the community
that their callous actions are justified. It is
also telling them they can take the law
into their hands.
Mr. Stark may have been a slumlord
and a crooked businessman with many
enemies but nobody, including the jour-
nalists at the New York Post, has the right
to be judgmental in their reporting.
Who didnt want him dead? is a
judgment call that only the American jus-
tice system is qualified to express. The
system may not be 100 percent perfect but
in most cases the people get justice and
protection as outlined in the American
laws.
As the community and family of Mr.
Stark continue to mourn his tragic death,
we are joining calls for the New York Post
to publish a formal apology to his family.
As one of the oldest newspapers in
this country, the New York Post must
practice a type of journalism that is sensi-
tive to the issues that affect ordinary peo-
ple. It must also be of acceptable ethical
standards.

The study also found: By age 18, 30
percent of black males, 26 percent of
Hispanic males and 22 percent of white
males have been arrested.
By age 23, 49 percent of black males,
44 percent of Hispanic males and 38 per-
cent of white males have been arrested.
While the prevalence of arrest
increased for females from age 18 to 23, the
variation between races was slight. At age
18, arrest rates were 12 percent for white
females and 11.8 percent and 11.9 percent
for Hispanic and black females, respective-
ly. By age 23, arrest rates were 20 percent
for white females and 18 percent and 16
percent for Hispanic and black females,
respectively.
"A problem is that many males espe-
cially black males are navigating the tran-
sition from youth to adulthood with the
baggage and difficulties from contact with
the criminal justice system," the study's
lead author, University of South Carolina
Criminology Professor Robert Brame, said
in the release.
Previous studies have found that blacks
are discriminated against in every phase of
the criminal justice system, from arrest to
prosecution and sentencing.
"As a society, we often worry a great
deal about the effects of children watching
television, eating junk food, playing sports
and having access to good schools," Brame
said. "Experiencing formal contact with the
criminal justice system could also have
powerful effects on behavior and impose
substantial constraints on opportunities for
America's youth."

He allegedly introduced legislation

December 5 last year.
The FBI has issued a
Missing Person poster for Dr
Teleka Patrick, 30, also known
as Teleka Calderon, a medical
resident at Borgess Medical
Center.
It said after completing
her shift Patrick unsuccess-
fully tried to rent a hotel room
in downtown Kalamazoo, and
then she was dropped off by
the hotel shuttle driver in the
parking lot at Borgess Medical
Center.
These are some of the
mysteries that we dont under-
stand, said Patricks
Jamaican-born father,
Mattahais Patrick, a retired
Seventh-day Adventist minis-
ter, who lives with his wife, in
Florida.
The Patricks said they
have hired a private investiga-
tor and have completed their
own searches for their daughter
in Kalamazoo and Indiana.
Teleka is a light, a happy,
spirited person, shes kind and
compassionate, said Patricks
Jamaican-born mother, Irene.
The FBI said Patrick had
left some of her belongings at
work, including her cell phone.
The law enforcement
agency said that later on the
same evening, Patrick's vehicle
-a light-gold 1997 Lexus ES
300-was found abandoned off
the roadway in a ditch with a
possible flat tire on I-94 (Inter-
State Highway), Porter,
Indiana.
The law enforcement
agency said that her belongings
were in the car, including
clothing items, a wallet that
contained her driver's license,
credit cards and a small
amount of cash.
Dr Patrick failed to report
to her regular shift at work the
next day. Dr Patrick has not
been heard from since this
time. If you have any informa-
tion concerning this person,
please contact your local FBI
office, or the nearest American
Embassy or Consulate, it
added,
Family members said they
are baffled by reports that she
might have been driving
toward Chicago, Illinois late
that night when she was sched-
uled to work the next morning.
Police said they are baf-
fled by the whole incident.
Were just as frustrated as the

T
he U.K's Telegraph newspaper has
published a story of a Jamaican crack-
dealer who has avoided being deported.
According to the story written by
Home Affairs correspondent David
Barrett, Keno Forbes was convicted of 11
counts of supplying Class A drugs on a
housing estate in Islington, north London,
in 2011.
The Jamaican crack dealer who was
jailed and banned from an entire London
borough because of his crimes has used
human rights laws to overturn a Home
Office bid to deport him.
Keno Forbes, 35, who operated under
the street name Blood, was convicted of
11 counts of supplying Class A drugs on a
housing estate in Islington, north London,
in 2011.
The judges decision means Forbes
will be able to stay in this country indefi-
nitely.
He would commute from Stevenage,
Hertfordshire, to deal drugs on a daily
basis in the 1960s-built Bemerton Estate
in Islington.
Forbes was jailed for three years at
Blackfriars Crown Court and handed a 10
year anti-social behaviour order which
prevented him from entering the borough
of Islington.
The Home Office tried to have Forbes
sent back to his home country on the
grounds that any foreign criminal jailed
for more than 12 months is eligible for
automatic deportation.
Forbess lawyers lodged an appeal
under Article 8 of the European
Convention on Human Rights - which sets
out the right to private and family life -
and said removing him would damage his
relationship with his wife and children.
The drug dealer won his case at the
immigration and asylum tribunal and the
Home Office lodged an appeal, claiming
the court had failed to give adequate rea-
sons why it ruled Forbes was in a subsist-
ing relationship with his wife.

February 18 and 21, 2014.
The summit, which will
be in two phases, will kick-
off in Montego Bay and
bring together over 300 indi-
viduals from throughout the
education sector in Western
Jamaica, as well as represen-
tatives from overseas.
On February 19, the
conference will move east to
Port More, where approxi-
mately 500 education advo-

Robotics competition in NYC.
The JC Robotics team consists of 12-
14 students and 3 teachers from Jamaica
College, for the last 4 years they have com-
peted the FTC Robotics Competition for
high school students.
The JC Team was originally entered in
the competition in 2010 by the NY Chapter
of the Jamaica College Old Boys'
Association. The Association was able to
convince organizers that this Jamaican High
School was capable and ready to compete at
the level of the NY high schools and this
they have done to the delight of the Jamaica
College administration and the Jamaican
Community in the Diaspora.
Jamaica College is currently the only
high school from the Caribbean that has
entered this competition and have done
remarkably well over the last 4 years. In
2010, when they first entered, their robot
failed to perform and they returned back to
Jamaica very disappointed. However in
2011, 2012 and 2013 they placed 12th, 3rd
and 4th respectively out of 72 teams.
In 2013, in addition to coming 4th ,
they also got the Inspire Award and quali-
fied to participate in the FTC World
Robotics Competition in St.Louis,
Missouri. They placed 26th out of 128 in
that competition.
This year they have sent two teams, an

are reported to be undernourished, despite
the countrys high-income status.
This is revealed in the "National Report
for Trinidad and Tobago Civil Societys

Millennium Development Goals.
Hazel Brown, founding member of the
Network of non-governmental organisa-
tions, made a presentation of the report at a
media conference, on Tuesday in Port of

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti:
T
he Inter-American Development Bank
(IDB) has announced the approval of a
$40.5 million grant to expand the Caracol
Industrial Park, a modern manufacturing
facility in northern Haiti.
The resources will bolster the Haitian
governments efforts to attract more job-
generating investments in an economically
disadvantaged but potentially productive
region.
The new grant for the state-owned
industrial park will finance the construction
of more factory shells, canteens, adminis-
trative buildings and other service facilities,
roads and utility networks. The IDB provid-
ed $105 million for the first two phases of
the project, launched in 2011, while the
U.S. government donated the electricity
generation plant that powers the factories
and nearby communities.
Since it opened its doors, on April 1st,
2012, the Caracol Industrial Park has
signed on four tenants, creating nearly
3,000 jobs in a region where there were few
formal employment opportunities, particu-
larly for women.
The manufacturing facility comple-
ments other projects backed by the Haitian
government and the donor community to
boost development in the countrys north-
ern departments.
The new grant includes resources for
small infrastructure projects in communi-
ties close to the industrial park, such as
improving roads or building bicycle lanes
and bus stops. Additional studies will be
carried out to monitor and evaluate the eco-
nomic, social, and environmental impact of
the industrial park.
As Haitis leading multilateral donor,
the IDB is currently financing projects
totaling around $1.4 billion in agriculture,
education, energy, transport, water and san-
itation, and private sector development. All
IDB grants are executed by Haitian govern-
ment agencies and include capacity build-
ing resources.

RAMARLEY GRAHAM MEMORIAL
L
aw enforcement authorities in
New York say prosecutors may
this week empanel a grand jury, and
elevate charges to murder against a
Jamaica-born transgender woman,
accused of killing a four-year-old
boy.
Prosecutors have charged
Kryzie King, 27 , who was born as
Christopher King, with first-degree
assault, reckless endangerment and
unlawful imprisonment, in the
death of Myls Dobson who was
found dead last Wednesday in the
bathroom of an apartment on
Manhattans West Side.
King was ordered held on
US$500-thousand bail.The medical
examiner is yet to determine how
the boy died.
The police report that Okee
Wade, 37, the boys father, who is
currently in a New Jersey jail serv-
ing time on a fraud charge, had
turned over the care of his son to
the Jamaican.
Court records show the boy
was bound, gagged, beaten and
burned, during the three weeks
King was taking care of him.
Prosecutors allege that the
four-year-old child did not have a
full meal since December 26, and
had lost at least 20 pounds while
under Kings care.
And, the mother of the mur-
dered boy, Ashlee Dobson, 29, told
reporters she lost custody of her
son as New York Citys
Administration for Children
Services claimed she was an unfit
mother.
New York City Mayor, Bill de
Blasio has ordered an investigation
into the case.

Sports is very strong in Cuba and in

group of Cuban soccer players who are
already being trained by Dutch experts at
the Havana Pedro Marrero soccer field.

A
thletes and administrators must be held
to the same level of accountability as it
relates to cheating - this is the opinion of
former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson in an
address at the RJR Sports Foundation
Awards on Friday in Kingston, Jamaica.
Patterson charged that those who hold
high office in sports, must ensure the con-
tinued education of players on the hazards
of drugs and added, that once charged, ath-
letes are entitled to the best available
defence.
The former Prime Ministers statement
was endorsed by Ian Wilkinson, President of
the Jamaica Bar Association, who said the
responsibility rests with both athletes and
administrators.
We must do what is right, we must not
complain because we are Jamaicans. We
must not complain because we are
Jamaicans now coming under the micro-
scope. We must ensure that we also practice
our trade fairly, said Wilkinson who was a
guest on the weekly review programme,

of returning to form, Venus Williams was
let down by her serve and her concentration

Ekaterina Makarova on the first day of the

The No. 22-seeded Makarova upset
Serena Williams in the fourth round here in
2012, but was comprehensively outplayed in
the first set against the elder of the Williams
sisters on Monday, dropping serve three
times.
Williams had chances in the second set,
too, missing a break-point opportunity to go
up 4-2, and then serving three consecutive
double-faults after leading the ninth game
40-30 to surrender a crucial break.
The 33-year-old Williams, the second-

some time out after the second set to change
her zebra-striped dress and came back
strongly, taking a 3-0 lead. But Makarova
rallied again and Williams' error count rose
she had 21 of her 56 unforced errors in
the deciding set.
She has struggled with injuries and ill-
ness in recent seasons but reached the final

Sean Paul for

S
ean Paul has been nominated for the
2014 Jamaican Youth View Awards, in
the category Favourite Local International

If successful, this would be the second

The year 2013 was arguably one of the

The artiste, born Sean Paul Ryan

S
TING 2013 can definitely go down as
the best one-day concert in Jamaica WI.
With over 20,000 screaming dance hall fans,
JamWorld was alive. The line up was star-
studded with artists like rapper 2Chainz,
Wyclef Jean, Supercat, Beenie Man, Lady
Saw, and any more.
On my arrival to the venue, in order to
go backstage I had to pass through at least
three heavy-guarded gates. The vibes back-
stage was hype and only the elite few that
included the press was granted access.
The media room was full of cameras
and media personals trying to get that spe-
cial interview from the many artists that
graced the room. The show started on time at
8 pm, but the real showcase was at 12am
when pay per view kicked in.
Wyclef Jean took the stage and gave
fans an amazing performance full of energy
and real talent. The crowd hanged on to his
every word. He is such a humble and easy
going artist.
With the trend set by Wyclef, the other
artists knew they had to bring their A game.
2Chainz didnt receive the welcome he
anticipated, and maybe because he arrived
on the same day, he wasnt schooled that he
should do the songs more popular in
Jamaica. Instead of trying to introduce his
new songs, which by the action of the
crowd, no one cared to know. Super Cat was
OK; I say that because some fans expected
much more from him.
The main highlight of the night was the
surprised clash between dancehall queen
Lady Saw and Macka Diamond who were
very hard on each other. Thank God for
Heavy Dee and host Ragga, who control the
steaming duo. With water splashing and
curse words spilling, this was much more
than a musical clash. In the end Lady Saw
came out on top. Poor Macka, her superhero
costume did her no justice. She went off the
stage trying to figure out what the hell just
happened.
The worst artist of the night goes to
DAngel, who I always had high regards for.
With Ninja Man calling her name she made
a surprised entrance. After begging the pro-
moters to pay her so she can pay her sons
school fee, who by the way is international
grammy winning artist Beenie Mans son
too, she decided to show the crowd her
whining skills and with a back slide and legs
up she ended her night as the new laughing
stock of Sting.
Reggae artist Sizzla also, left an impact.
Thank God the promoters decided he could-
nt be trusted and didnt bring him in the pay
per view. With his rant against gays and
police I am pretty sure his US visa will never
be reinstated. Instead of promoting segrega-
tion and racial bias he should use his influ-
ence to teach love and brotherhood.
The show ended on a high note with
Black Rhino slaying Kiprich who must have
been drunk because he wasnt able to
remember his own lyrics. With his reputa-
tion of winning clashes, everyone was
shocked for the upset and a few patrons
believed Kiprich purposely lost.
With the morning sun rising, all the
patrons left feeling that they got their
moneys worth.
Bring The Sting lived up to all the hype.

Adams Condemns
New York Post
BROOKLYN:
B
rooklyn Borough President Eric
Adams last Sunday joined Jewish
community leaders and local elected offi-
cials to condemn the New York Posts
hateful coverage of the murder of
Menachem Max Stark, a 39-year-old
father of eight children from the Hasidic
community of Williamsburg.
Along with reporting that alleged him
to be a crooked slumlord, the Posts cover
featured a picture of Stark next to the
headline, Who didnt want him dead?
We stand as One Brooklyn in con-
demnation of the New York Posts cover-
age of the murder of Menachem Stark,
said Borough President Adams. Above all
else, this was a husband, a father and a
member of a community that sits in
mourning over his tragic passing. The
New York Posts decision to hang him in
effigy on the cover of todays paper, just
hours after his family has begun to sit
shiva, is a betrayal of the journalistic
integrity that its readership deserves. I am
calling for the New York Post to publish a
formal apology to the Stark family in
tomorrows paper.
Elected officials in attendance includ-
ed Public Advocate Letitia James,
Assembly Member Joe Lentol, Council
Members Laurie Cumbo, Chaim Deutsch,
David Greenfield, Steve Levin and Mark
Treyger as well as Rockland County
Legislature Majority Leader Aaron
Weider.
"I condemn in the strongest possible
terms the incredibly insensitive and crass
cover of today's New York Post which
mocks the kidnapping and brutal murder
of Menachem Stark," said State Senator
Simcha Felder. The Post must issue an
immediate apology to the Stark family and
to all New Yorkers for its egregious behav-
ior and failure to exercise any judgment
whatsoever in this matter.
I am disgusted that the New York
Post condoned the murder of a business-
man, husband and father of eight, said
Greenfield. This clearly crosses the
bounds of decency and demands an imme-
diate apology from the newspaper to the
grieving family and the entire community.
The murder of an innocent man is not
something to be celebrated in New York
City. It's a horrific tragedy and the Post's
coverage of this death is borderline anti-
Semitic.
The New York Posts unbelievably
offensive headline this morning comes the
day after Mr. Starks family and children,
as well as an entire community, laid him to
rest and are still mourning his death, said
Levin. For the New York Post to suggest
that a person deserved to be murdered is
sickening and reaches a new low. The
entire community is outraged by such a
vulgar headline that is so offensive and
horrific. The New York Post should pull
their story and issue an apology to the fam-
ily and community that are still in mourn-
ing.
Jewish community leaders announced
a $10,000 reward for information leading
to the arrest and conviction of those
responsible for the murder of Stark, whose
smoldering body was found in a dumpster
in Long Island, following his abduction
Thursday night outside his real estate
office in Brooklyn.

Caribbean Life newspaper which target
the African American communities.
New York needs a Governor
who will put economic
growth over politics
By David Laska
dlaska@nygop.org
A
fter seven years and three Democratic
Governors, New York is the most
taxed, most regulated, least free state in
America.
Amidst that backdrop, Andrew Cuomo
launched his reelection campaign yesterday
with a 339-slide power point presentation
at his State of the State address.
The Governors lofty rhetoric included
no serious solutions to unfunded pension
liabilities and New York's bloated, wasteful
Medicaid program, both of which threaten
the long-term fiscal stability of the State.
Rather than address those issues in a
serious way, Andrew Cuomo has forced
New York's cash-strapped counties and
cities into a corner, such that the Co-Chair
of Cuomo's own Democratic Party warned
of the "real harm that is going to be visited
upon the people of my city and the people
of cities across New York State and across
governments."
"All the election-year pandering in the
world won't distract New Yorkers from
Andrew Cuomo's record," said NYGOP
Chair Ed Cox.
"The corporate tax cuts, estate tax cuts
and manufacturing tax credits that com-
prise Andrew Cuomo's economic plan were
taken right out of the NYGOP Jobs
Agenda. But after three years of raising
taxes and driving jobs and citizens out of
New York, does anyone really believe what
Andrew Cuomo says anymore? The fact is
that New York government is now spend-
ing more than it has at anytime in history.
"Andrew Cuomo talked about ethics
reform and a supposed 'Women's Agenda,'
while Sheldon Silver sat a mere few feet
away from him. A Governor who will not
take on an Assembly Speaker who used
taxpayer money to cover-up sexual abuse
of female staffers in the Assembly is not
serious about ethics reform or women's
rights.
"New Yorkers are ready for a
Governor who will put economic growth
and sound fiscal policy over petty partisan
politics. After seven years and three
Democratic Governors, they deserve noth-
ing less."

"Big dreams are not a

in his speech.
The moment was the pin-

ANDY KINGS OATH OF OFFICE:
Councilmember Andy King of the 12th District takes the Oath of Office, adminis-
tered by the Hon. Civil Court Judge Armando Montano. More than 700 people
packed a Bronx high school auditorium Sunday afternoon to attend an electrify-
ing inauguration celebration of New York City Councilmember Andy King. The
well-wishers included hundreds of community supporters as well as elected offi-
cials, labor leaders and clergy leaders who gathered at Evander Childs High
School to voice their support for the newly elected official who is eager to change
the second-rate image that is sometimes associated with his 12th District. Were
going to be moving forward. There are a lot of things that I would like to see get
done in our community. I make a commitment to you today that that office on Gun
Hill Road, the office in Co-Op City and the office at 250 Broadway will always be
open, said Councilmember King.

THE MATH CLUB News
S
cores of sixth, seventh and
eighth graders from several
schools in New York City will
converge on the Richard Green
Campus in Bronx to participate
in the annual, very hotly con-
tested, Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. Math Competition scheduled
for Saturday (January 18).
According to the organizer
of the president of The Math
Club, Jefery Blake, in each
grade the top student will be
awarded a laptop computer, a
large trophy and a certificate
from the New York City
Mayors office. The top ten stu-
dents in each grade will also be
awarded trophies and certifi-
cates from the Mayors Office
as well. All participants will be
awarded with certificates from
the Bronx Borough Presidents
office.
Many teachers, parents,
siblings and volunteers will be
present to wish contestants good
luck before the exams, and con-
sole or congratulate them after
one hour of grueling test of
numbers. We are inviting the
public to come out and witness
an event that is destined to
become the super bowl of the
Bronx in the near future. The
teachers and parents just want to
be proud of the work that they
put in to enable these students
come out and show their math
skills. However, the students are
driven by the prizes that are to
be won, Blake explains.
The president further notes
that the 2014 competition will
be the most keenly contested
competition and that Kingston
College Old Boys Association
will donate cash prizes to the
boy with the highest score and
MICO Past Student Association
award the girl with the highest
score.
Blake is urging volunteers
to come out and assist with the
control and steady flow of activ-
ities for the day. We are aiming
to start at 10:00 am, and should
be done by 2:00 pm. We need
volunteers to monitor exam
rooms, mark exam papers, serve
lunches and clean up, he adds.
He also expresses his grati-
tude to the Beacon Program
director, Marylyn Aviles and her
staff for sponsorship of the
venue and their overall contri-
bution to the competitions dur-
ing the past ten years. Blake also
says thanks to the sponsors, the

teachers and students.

B
lack men hairstyles are as varied and
different as those of women. Indeed,
their choices for styling their hair feature
cuts of all lengths and styles. To find the
style that is best for him, a man can con-
sider his lifestyle, personality, career, and
overall appearance.
A black person's hair is by nature very
thick and curly. In fact, it can be very hard
to keep combed and properly maintained.
A black man's hair, if not kept properly,
might become tangled and matted. Even
more, the gentleman usually does not
relax his hair as a woman would. Thus, he
must find other hairstyles in which to wear
his hair.
A person who is an athlete or who is
in the military may not be able to wear a
longer hairstyle and may favor a shorter
cut. One such short style is the buzz cut. A
stylist uses clippers to achieve this cut for
his or her customer.
The cut features lengths that ranges
from one quarter of an inch, a half inch, or
longer. However, most barbers recom-
mend that black men wear this cut shorter
than other men in order to avoid compli-
cations caused by curling. Like the buzz
cut, the shaved cut also allows men to
wear their hair short. However, this style
is typically longer than having one's hair
buzzed. With this style, a man can still
wear his sideburns long and wear hair
longer by his hairline. Additionally, a man
can request that geometric shapes,
designs, ridges, and words be shaved into
his hair's length. black-men-hairstyles
Black men hairstyles often feature
braids. These braids, called dreadlocks
and cornrows, allow him to possess a great
deal of length to his hair. Dreadlocks, or
dreads, are long loose braids that may go
all the way down to a man's waist or as
high as his neck line.
These braids as sometimes the choice
of style for men who come from Jamaican
or Caribbean heritage. Bob Marley, the
Jamaican singer, famously sported dread-
locks. Braids can also be fashioned in the
cornrow style.
These braids are tighter and placed
closely to the scalp. In fact, the style itself
imitates that of the woman's braid style
known as French braiding. Stylists note
that cornrows can be traced back to Africa,
thus their appeal for some men. The braids
may be plaited as wide or as narrow as the
man wishes.
black-men-hairstyles
Fades are a hairstyle that will never
go out of style; a fade is in a way like a tai-
lored buzz cut. Many black males wear a
fade just for the simple fact of how versa-
tile the hairstyle is.
Regardless if you're a rapper of a suc-
cessful business man, a fade can compli-
ment any black male or ethnic male's fea-
tures. Afros are making a comeback, so
don't be hesitant if you see a 3 foot Afro on
a famous rapper or singer.
Everyone critiqued Lenny Kravitz
when he wittingly wore an Afro in his
famous video for American Woman, but
now more and more people are bringing
back this classic hairstyle from the 60s
and 70s.

Ten Tips to Help You
Choose a Tax Preparer
WE GET

Tax

Fitzroy Melvin

M
any people look for help from profes-
sionals when its time to file their tax
return. If you use a paid tax preparer to file
your federal income tax return this year, the
IRS urges you to choose that preparer care-
fully. Even if someone else prepares your
return, you are legally responsible for what
is on it.
Here are ten tips to keep in mind when
choosing a tax return preparer:
Check the preparers qualifications. All
paid tax return preparers are required to
have a Preparer Tax Identification Number.
In addition to making sure they have a
PTIN, ask if the preparer belongs to a pro-
fessional organization and attends continu-
ing education classes.
Check on the preparers history. Check
with the Better Business Bureau to see if the
preparer has a questionable history. Also
check for any disciplinary actions and for
the status of their licenses. For certified pub-
lic accountants, check with the state boards
of accountancy. For attorneys, check with
the state bar associations. For enrolled
agents, check with the IRS Office of
Enrollment.
Ask about service fees. Avoid preparers
who base their fee on a percentage of your
refund or those who claim they can obtain
larger refunds than other preparers can.
Also, always make sure any refund due is
sent to you or deposited into an account in
your name. Taxpayers should not deposit
their refund into a preparers bank account.
Ask to e-file your return. Make sure
your preparer offers IRS e-file. Any paid
preparer who prepares and files more than
10 returns for clients must file the returns
electronically, unless the client opts to file a
paper return. IRS has safely and securely
processed more than one billion individual
tax returns since the debut of electronic fil-
ing in 1990.
Make sure the preparer is accessible.
Make sure you will be able to contact the tax
preparer after you file your return, even after
the April 15 due date. This may be helpful in
the event questions arise about your tax
return.
Provide records and receipts. Reputable
preparers will request to see your records
and receipts. They will ask you questions to
determine your total income and your quali-
fications for deductions, credits and other
items.
Do not use a preparer who is willing to e-file
your return by using your last pay stub
before you receive your Form W-2. This is
against IRS e-file rules.
Never sign a blank return. Avoid tax
preparers that ask you to sign a blank tax
form.
Review the entire return before signing.
Before you sign your tax return, review it
and ask questions. Make sure you under-
stand everything and are comfortable with
the accuracy of the return before you sign it.
Make sure the preparer signs and includes
their PTIN. A paid preparer must sign the
return and include their PTIN as required by
law. The preparer must also give you a copy
of the return.
Report abusive tax preparers to the
IRS. You can report abusive tax preparers
and suspected tax fraud to the IRS on Form
14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer. If
you suspect a return preparer filed or altered
a return without your consent, you should
also file Form 14157-A, Return Preparer
Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit. Download
the forms on the IRS.gov website or order
them by mail at 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-
3676).

WOMAN SEEKING MAN
R
egardless of how handsome or dashing
they seem, there are men out there that
just spell trouble when it comes to having a
serious relationship. Its not that theyre bad
boys or heartbreakers; theyre just not com-
mitment material. Why, you ask? Well the
answer basically comes down to lifestyle.
1) The Man-Child
This guy is clinging to his glory days when
life was less complicated and responsibility
was minimal. Hes obsessed with Guitar
Hero, frequently attends keg parties and con-
siders pizza one of the major food groups. As
a gateway back to youth, the Man-Child is
fun for a date or two, but the problem is that
hes not going anywhere and youve already
got children, This adolescent-adult has prob-
lems holding onto jobs and is more interested
in living the life of a fraternity brother than
making a serious commitment. Women are
inclined to ditch The Man-Child until he
grows up a little bit and learns to live life in
the real world.
2) The Roving-Eye Guy
This guy is constantly looking at every
female but the one hes with. He ogles the
barista, the woman at the bus stop, even his
buddys wife, making his date feel inferior
and unattractive. Most of us will agree that
men are inclined to admire beautiful women
(and vice versa) but lets face it: Recognizing
beauty and disrespectfully rubbernecking are
two completely different things. Constantly
competing for your partners attention gets
old really fast. If a mans smarmy smile, inap-
propriate comments/gestures and keen inter-
est in others are too distracting to the rela-
tionship, women pick up and move along.
3) The Cheapskate
You dont have to be labeled a gold digger
to recognize the difference between a man
whos frugal and one whos downright miser-
ly. You know the type: he brings coupons to
the first date or parks 17 blocks away to avoid
paying a $4 valet (or both). Ah yes, this
avoidable is known as the cheapskate.
Now, there is nothing wrong with a guy shop-
ping for the best deal and being conservative
with his money. However, if every activity is
all about finding the stingiest alternative,
nothing is ever fun.
4) Mr. Gadget
The gadget guy is always toting the latest
toys for big boys. He has the hottest phone, a
high-speed boat, a decked-out luxury car, and
the newest Harley (for those weekend
drives). In other words, this guy has a lot of
material things keeping him busy. As a
grown-up kid who can't resist the new play-
thing of the moment, he has a hard time keep-
ing his attention on women. After all, who
can compete with technology when it
changes at lightning speed? Whether he is out
to impress others, or he constantly needs to
trade up to feed his own ego, this guy cares
more about stuff than people.
5) The Mama's Boy
The Mamas Boy probably still lives with his
parents in their house, allowing Mom to laun-
der his clothes, make his bed and cook his
meals. (In many cultures, its not unusual to
live with ones parents forever, so living at
home isnt necessarily a deal breaker.)
However, when a man delights in being wait-
ed on hand-and-foot by his mom, theres
trouble. Mamas Boys expect their mates to
cater to them endlessly and they never under-
stand why that would be a problem.
Finding Mr. Right
In all fairness, these guys arent all bad
and maybe they just need a patient partner to
come in and show them the light. Just
because he relishes saving money, loves his
mama and delights in playing Grand Theft
Auto IV until dawn, all that doesnt make him
unworthy of a relationship. However,
divorced moms should avoid these challeng-
ing fellows because they still have some
growing to do plus youve already got kids to
raise!
Dear Divine Diva:
M
y parents died in a car accident
when I was a little girl. I am now
15 years old, and live with my grand-
mother and aunt, My grandmother isn't
able to work, so Aunt Martha is the only
one who has an income in our home.
The problem is, when Aunt Martha
gets drunk she physically attacks my
grandmother and me. I love my grand-
mother and don't want her hurt.
But I don't want us to end up on the
street, either. What can I do to make my
Aunt Martha be nice to us, when she's
had too much to drink? -NN, Queens
A: Your Aunt Martha's drinking is out of
control and she should probably be in
(AA) alcoholics anonymous, But what
you have described is both child abuse
and elder abuse.
You can get help, But only if you get
into the social services system. The way
to do this is to tell a guidance counselor
or teacher at your school what is going
on. Do it soon.
Please do not wait until your Aunt
Martha loses control to the point that she
seriously injures your grandmother.
Please do not be afraid that you will be
out on the street. your grandmother may
qualify for a pension, and she should be
eligible for aid to families with depend-
ent children (AFDC).
Dear Devine Diva:
I have a problem I can't discuss with my
family. I am a 49-year old, married for 10
years, and I am in love with my wife's
daughter from her first marriage.
Stacey is 24 years old and married. I had
these feelings for her for a long time.
Stacey is fun to be around and very pret-
ty when she smiles. We talk when she
comes over to visit her mom, and she
drives me crazy.
My wife says I have a crush on her
daughter. I want to say you are so right,
but I just keep quiet. I asked Stacey out
to dinner one night, Just the two of us, it
was going great until I told her how I felt
about her. She was shocked!!! The only
thing she said is that I am married to her
mother, and that she is married.
Needless to say, the rest of the night was
very uncomfortable, I walked her to her
car, and told her that if she was ever
interested give me a call. 1 week later I
sent her a dozen roses with a card that
said "let's be friends." I tried to call her
but she said she did not feel comfortable
talking to me.
Now she treats me like I have the plague.
What should I do?
-NT, Bronx
A: The first thing that you should do is
take a cold shower and wake up. You
have slipped from fantasy to obsession,
and created a problem within the family
and made a fool of yourself. Stop the
calls and roses, you and Stacey will
never be friends, now that your inappro-
priate feelings are out in the open. If you
can't let go please talk to a mental health
professional.

Five Types of Men to Avoid
ARIES (March 21Apr.
19): Brevity is the soul of
wit so be as witty as you can
be today! Keep all your
communications short and
to the point and you are sure
to blow past any competi-
tion you may have.
TAURUS (April 20May
20): Now is a good time for
you to speak out your heart
is as clear as ever, and you
are sure to make your feel-
ings known if you can find
the bravery to get started. At
least one person is glad for
your openness.
GEMINI (May 21Jun. 20):
You're in constant motion
today so make sure that
your people know what's
what. Things may get a lit-
tle weird, but you are more
than capable of adjusting,
and even enjoying the
process!
CANCER (June 21July
22): Work gets complicated
so make sure that you're
able to keep up with it all.
Your energy is split
between a million different
tasks, but you can make
incremental progress if you
keep at it.
LEO (July 23Aug. 22):
You're feeling a little cocky
but that works out well for
you! It turns out that some-
one has been waiting for
you to impress them, and
your self-confidence makes
that a virtual certainty.
VIRGO (Aug. 23Sept.
22): You're thinking more
quickly on your feet, and
you should be able to avoid
more than one tricky social
situation by noticing it
before it gets out of hand.
Things should chill out
tonight.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 Oct.22):
Once again, your dual
nature pops up but this time,
it's making life sweet! You
can see both sides of every
issue, and you can also find
new ways to bring your
people together. Have fun!
SCORPIO (Oct. 23Nov.
21): You need to take some-
what greater care today
especially when it comes to
work. Someone you think
you know well is sure to
surprise you, but if you're
prepared, things should go
quite well.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22
Dec.21): You should try to
carve out some time for
deep thought today, but
make sure that you're not
expecting to change the
world. If you explore your
philosophy, that may be its
own reward.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22
Jan. 19): Try to get rid of
anything that's not useful or
making life better for you.
Things are complex enough
without a lot of clutter mak-
ing life harder. Be as ruth-
less as you can be today!
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 Feb.
18): Are you looking for
love? If so, expand your
search right now, the least
likely people can spark all
sorts of emotions. Look for
those with at least one solid
connection, but don't over-
think it.
PISCES (Feb. 19Mar. 20):
While you may not be in
your element, exactly, you
do feel a surge of creative
energy flowing through
you. Make the most of it
and find some positive
aspect of the day to make
even better.

Tax Benefits New York's
Families & Businesses
G
overnor Andrew M. Cuomo
recently announced details
of a more than $2 billion tax
relief proposal designed to
increase economic opportunity
and attract and grow businesses
across the State. Governor
Cuomo's proposal includes the
following measures:
2-Year Freeze on
Property Taxes
By almost any measure, New
Yorks real property taxes are the
highest in the nation with an
average residential bill of
$5,040. In addition, three of the
top four highest county median
tax bills in the country are in
New York. And New York is one
of only 10 states where a resi-
dent can live in three general
purpose local governments at the
same time. There is no reason
for New York to have nearly
10,500 separate forms of local
governments; many of which
provide overlapping or duplica-
tive services.
Property Tax
Circuit Breaker
Under the property tax circuit
breaker proposal, 1.9 million
low- and middle-income taxpay-
ers pay an effective real property
tax rate relative to income that
exceeds their income tax rate. To
help these individuals and fami-
lies, Governor Cuomo proposes
that the State provide tax relief
based on a taxpayers ability to
pay. Households earning up to
$200,000 would be eligible and
the benefit would be adminis-
tered as a refundable tax credit
against the personal income tax
with an average benefit of
approximately $500.
Renters Tax Credit
There are 3.3 million
households across the state that
rent their homes. Over 829,000
low-income renter households
pay more than 50% of their
monthly cash income on housing
costs and thousands of moder-
ate-income renters face similar
burdens. To provide tax relief for
renters, Governor Cuomo pro-
poses providing tax relief for
renters with incomes below
$100,000 by offering a refund-
able personal income tax credit
that increases with family size.
Estate Tax Reforms
New York is one of only 15
states that impose an estate tax,
and the current estate tax level is
badly in need of reform. While
the federal government exempts
the first $5.25 million of an indi-
viduals estate, New York only
exempts estates valued below $1
million. To end this unnecessary
incentive for elderly New
Yorkers to leave the state,
Governor Cuomo proposes
increasing the New York estate
tax threshold to $5.25 million
and lowering the top rate to 10
percent over four years.
Beginning in 2019, the State
estate tax exemption would
equal the Federal exemption,
which is indexed to inflation.
Cut Business Taxes and Treat
Businesses More Fairly
New Yorks corporate franchise
tax is largely outdated and its
complexity results in lengthy
and complex audit processes that
take businesses years to resolve.
To streamline the tax structure
and provide relief for business-
es, Governor Cuomo recom-
mends that the State merge the
bank tax into the corporate fran-
chise tax and lowering the rate to
6.5 percent the lowest rate
since 1968.
