Preface
GZF900/1800-V Wireless Repeater of GSM/DCS Mobile Communication is widely used for constructing a hybrid GSM/DCS mobile communication network. It receives and amplifies uplink and downlink Radio Frequency (RF) signals to extend the coverage of base station. This Technical Manual covers the principles, functions, structure, installation, debugging, operation, and maintenance of the GZF900/1800-V wireless Repeater.

1. System Overview 1.1 Overview


In GSM mobile communication system, limited by the coverage of base station or by geographic environment, expressways, railways, tunnels, countryside and towns, mountains etc., there may exist many signal blind or shadow areas, or radio signal interference areas, bringing serious impact on voice quality or failure for normal mobile communication. To enhance the base station signal coverage and network quality, mobile communication repeater is an efficient and cost-effective solution.

Hongxins GZF900/1800-V series wireless repeaters, running at 894.9902.5MHz & 939.9947.5MHz in GSM system and 1718.91724.9MHz & 1813.91819.9MHz in DCS system, covering variable band selective in GSM and DCS systems, low power to high power, are for indoor and outdoor signal coverage application. Base station signals are first taken into repeaters through wireless method by using directional antenna. The repeaters amplify RF signals and make signal coverage-by-coverage network. GZF900/1800-V repeaters offer superior quality especially for minimized noise figure and inter-modulation distortion, which would great improve network uplink and downlink signal quality.

Hongxin Telecom provides strong and reliable central monitoring and control system for GZF900/1800-V series wireless repeaters. Operator could remote monitor and control all repeaters operation through user-friendly Window based system. The maintenance cost is lower and construction cycle is short.

1.2 Scope of Application of the Equipment


To enhance mobile network coverage for locations such as highway, countryside, town, residential/industrial area, park, subway, building, mountains, tunnel, airport, etc.

1.3 Major Features of the Equipment


1. Use filter with high selectivity and low insertion-loss and multi-stage filtering technology to eliminate uplink or downlink cross talk. 2. No interference with the base station and other radio equipments with low noise figure, high linearity and low IMD. 3. Choose variable bandwidth in 900MHz and 1800MHz according to requirement. 4. Automatic level control (ALC) function. 5. Unique Window based remote monitoring/control system. 6. Modularized design approach. 7. The equipment is fixed in the cabinet, which is waterproof. 8. Sit high-performance UPS in order to ensure uninterrupted working for tow while power goes.

2. Application
As the extension of base stations, the outdoor repeater provides fast and effective solutions to the problem of mobile communication dead and shadow zones outside. The products are applicable to expressways, railways, tunnels, countryside and towns as shown in the Fig.2.1-2.2.

3. Diagram, Features and Specification


3.1 Repeater Diagram
The following figures show the GZF900/1800-V Wireless repeaters.

Fig. 3-1 2W Repeater As shown as above, such repeater is applicable for 900/1800MHz frequency. In downlink, introduced 900MHz or 1800MHz signals are selected band by the DLXPC and transmitted to LNA to amplify and suppress the out-band signal. The signals are introduced to high-linearity PA in order to proper gain.

The connection of UPS and repeater is shown in Fig.3-2.

Fig. 3-2 UPS connection 220V AC power is connected to UPS that supplies for repeater. And UPS can charge to connected battery. UPS runs large-capability battery is important for repeater to survive two hours without power at least to ensure to communicate normally. UPS equips on sealed rechargeable battery to keep on charging and prolong working live whether power is on or off and provides protection for overcharge and overdischarge. It is necessary to charge for 10 hours at least. Precautions: 1) Inner and outer of UPS both equip battery. Please not open the casing in order to avoid electric shock and contact UPS manufacturer if it is necessary to repair. 2) Please not storage or use UPS and accessory batteries in some areas: Inflammable gas, corrosives, and dust areas. Abnormal high temperature (40 ) or low temperature (below 0), high humidity (above 90%) area; Avoid sunning and heated areas; Series shaking area; Outdoor 3) Please use powder fire extinguisher to put out fire. It is easy to cause electric shock for liquid extinguisher. 4) It should set the input jack UPS close to UPS to cut down power easily.

3.2 Product Features


1. Excellent RF performance: HONGXIN provides the GZF900/1800-V series repeaters with state-of-the-art performance such as minimized noise figure and IMD, uplink and downlink transmitting power, coverage range, uplink and downlink balance, out-of-band suppression, and time delay. 2. Modular design: Modular design is easier for operators to make upgrade and for maintenance. 3. Monitor and control (M&C): The interior M&C module of the GZF900/1800-V Repeater is the core to control the whole repeater and implements four functions: detection, control, communication, and alarming. The standby battery on the M&C board supports the normal running of the system. 4. Chassis: Repeater chassis adopts steel galvanization and plastic spraying for double protection. And coated with advanced material to ensure excellent outdoor performance; the protection degree can reach IP55. 5. Function: Repeater supports the EDGE and has the function of frequency hopping, extended range and split band. Customers can alternative band of frequency selection with monitor. 6. Reliability: Industrial-level components are used, which can sustain a temperature range of -20C ~ +55C so that the product can work reliably in a wide range of environments; the power supply of the integrated system is designed with high redundancy to make sure that the power module can work under normal load in 55C and start normally in -25C; the repeater is provided with multi-level lightning protection devices to ensure reliable lightning protection for the power supply, antenna and feeder. 7. Perfect Prolong Capability: UPS runs large-capability battery is important for repeater to survive two hours without power at least to ensure to communicate normally.

4Installation
4.1 Installation Flow
The general workflow of the Repeater is shown in Fig. 4-1.

Fig. 4-1 The general workflow of the Repeater To ensure safety during the installation, make sure to wear safety belt for overhead operations and wear safety hats for on-the-ground operations, and take care never to work in rainstorms.

4.2 Project preparations


4.2.1 Users cooperation
Hongxins technicians will take charge of the equipment installation and the users technicians should provide help if necessary. To ensure the normal running and maintenance of the equipment, the users technicians should proactively work together with Hongxins engineers and technicians and get familiar with the installation, structure, cabling, debugging procedure, etc.

4.2.2 On-site survey


Before installation, the installation technicians should consult with the project manager of the user and learn whether the installation site is ready for equipment installation. Specifically, they should survey such items as the installation site, iron tower or high pole, surrounding environment (temperature and humidity) and power supply. Where conditions permit, they should make an on-site survey together with the relevant persons of the user.

4.2.3 Installation tools


Installation tools include: electric percussion drill, iron hammer, pulley, rope, safety belt, safety hat, ladder, screwdriver, hacksaw, knife, pliers, spanner, compass, tape, tweezers, electric iron, etc.

4.2.4 Technical documentation


The installation technicians should keep on hand, and read in advance, such documents as Project Design Document, Equipment Installation Specifications, and Users Manual for the GZF900/1800-V.

4.3 Installation Conditions


4.3.1 Basic installation conditions
The repeater is designed to work outdoors under the temperature -25~55 and relative humidity up to 95%, so it can work in the indoor/outdoor natural environments in most areas. The following basic conditions should be ready before installation: 1. 2. 3. 220V AC power is available. A grounding bar is available nearby. There are appropriate buildings, iron towers or high poles to mount the donor antenna and service antenna.

4.3.2 Recommended environment requirements


1. No. 1 choice is wall mounting in a room that is cool, dry, well ventilated, provided with fire control facilities, free from corrosive gases or smoke, and water-tight on the roof, with the electromagnetic interference field intensity less than 140dB v/m (0.01 MHz~110000 MHz). 2. The second choice is a shady and well-ventilated outdoor wall without direct sunshine or rain drenching. 3. 4. The third choice is a common wall, iron tower or high pole. The installation height should be such as to facilitate RF cabling, heat radiation, safety protection and maintenance. 5. Independent and stable 220VAC 15% Power should be provided, which

mustnt be shared with other large-power communication equipment and electric appliances. 6. The installation building, iron tower or high pole should be provided with lightning protection facilities and should be strong and stable enough. 7. The antenna backstay or roof should be provided with a pole to help mount the antenna.

The diameter of the pole may be 50mm ~ 105mm, depending on the antenna to be mounted. A ladder should also be available to help mount the antenna. All metal parts should be properly grounded and provided with lightning protection facilities.

4.4 Equipment Check


4.4.1 Counting the goods
The two parties should unpack and count the goods against the packing list.

Check whether the packing box is intact in appearance. If any goods are wrong or missing or if the outer package is damaged seriously, stop unpacking immediately and find out the cause, and report to the relevant department.

4.4.2 Unpacking inspection


Open the packing box if it is intact. Handle with care to avoid damaging anything. After the packing box is opened, check whether the goods inside match the packing list and whether the packing list matches the inspection list in the Unpacking Inspection Report. If any goods are wrong or missing or if the outer package is damaged seriously, find out the cause, and report to the relevant department.

After unpacking inspection, fill out the Unpacking Inspection Report. Both parties shall sign the Report, and then the goods shall be handed over to the user. Each party shall hold one copy of the Unpacking Inspection Report, and the project supervisor should feed back the Inspection Conclusion within seven days to the vendor for documentation.

4.5 Installation of the Main Chassis of the Repeater


The Repeater is attached with such installation fittings as installation board and fixing pieces. The chassis of the Repeater can be mounted on wall.

The bottom of the equipment is usually about 1.2 m above the ground.

Wall mounting steps are as follows: 1. As shown in Fig.4-2 firstly bore six holes on the wall for installation with Churn Drill(hammer), the size of which is the same as that of installation hole for bracket the and the distance of installation hole for bracket is 304mm. 2. As shown in Fig.4-2 put six steel expansion bolts and expanding pipes into bored holes, then fit bolts over the installation hole on bracket as well as flat washer and spring washer, at last put nuts onto bolts and screw them down tightly. 3. As shown in Fig.4-2 remove bottom cover of equipment, fit four M840 bolts (GB5780-86) over the installation hole of equipment, the installation hole of bracket, flat washer and spring washer in turn, and fasten them with nuts for connection. 4. 5. As shown in Fig.4-2 install bottom cover. Wall mounting is shown in Fig. 4-2.

4.6 Antenna Feeder Installation


The Repeater should be connected to two sets of antenna feeder systems, one set is the donor antenna connected to the donor interface, and the other is the service antenna connected to the service interface. The requirements for the installation of the antenna feeder systems of the Repeater are the similar to those for the BTS, with the differences described below. For more information, please read the requirements for the installation of the BTS antenna feeder system.

4.6.1 Installation of the donor antenna and the connected feeder


The installation of the donor antenna and the connected feeder is shown in Fig. 4-3.

Depending on the project design, the donor antenna may be a grid dish reflector antenna, Yagi antenna, corner reflector antenna, plate antenna or logarithm period antenna. The antenna is installed on a pole and a compass may be used to determine the normal direction of the horizontal plane of the antenna. According to the project requirements, adjust the normal direction of the horizontal plane of the antenna right toward the donor BTS antenna, and meanwhile adjust its verticality right toward the BTS according to the elevations of the BTS antenna, Repeater donor antenna, as well as the local terrain. Make sure that the pole is in good contact with the lightning protection belt and the antenna can withstand strong wind. 2. The antenna connector is usually N-type female connector, or an adapter should be used if another type of connector is used. The feeder connector is N-type male connector. Connect the connectors of the antenna and feeder by a proper moment and make sure the connectors are not subject to any lateral force. Seal the connectors with self-adhesive waterproof tape and electric isolating tape. 3. According to the design requirements, the feeder may be 10D-FB or 1/2-inch RF

cable, the minimum bending radius being 80mm.The bending radius of 7/8-inch feeder, if used, should be greater than 130mm.The feeder is fixed to the ladder with plastic clips at 1m interval. Select 1 ~ 3 grounding kits depending on the length of the cable, and seal the grounding points with self-adhesive waterproof tape and electric isolating tape. Following are the requirements for feeder grounding: 1) 2) 3) 4. L > 30 m, grounded at three points (top, middle and bottom) 10 m < L < 30 m, grounded at two points (top and bottom) L < 10 m, grounded at one point (bottom)

/4-shorting device may be used, as required by the user, as the lightning arrestor of the Repeater. When the lightning arrestor and the Repeater are installed nearby, the female connector D is connected to the feeder from the antenna and the female connector E is connected to the donor interface at the Repeater. The connectors should be sealed with self-adhesive waterproof tape and electric isolating tape.

4.6.2 Installation of the service antenna and feeder


The installation of the service antenna and the connected feeder is shown in Fig. 4-4.

Fig.4-4 Connection of the service antenna and feeder The service antenna of the Repeater is usually plate antenna (45, 65, 90 and 120), and it is installed in a way similar to that of the donor antenna, the difference being that the interface of the Repeater is a donor interface. while in indoor application, the ceiling mounting antenna were usually employed.

4.6.3 Precautions for antenna feeder installation


1. The donor antenna and the service antenna shouldnt be too near vertically, otherwise self-oscillation reception and transmission may result. The vertical distance between the donor antenna and the service antenna should usually be greater than 15m. 2. The antenna feeder system must be installed by experienced professionals. 3. Do not install the antenna near any power line so as to ensure personal safety. 4. All exposed connectors must be sealed with self-adhesive waterproof tape and

electric isolating tape.

4.7 Grounding and Power Supply Connection


4.7.1 Equipment grounding
The Repeater must be grounded properly. On the sides of the main chassis of the Repeater are grounding bolts, which are connected to the ground with 16mm2 or thicker copper wire. The grounding cable should be as short as possible. 1. For installation on an iron pole, the grounding cable of the equipment is usually connected to the iron pole (iron tower). The grounding resistance (R) of the iron pole should be less than 10 and the grounding junction pieces should be protected from corrosion. 2. For installation on the wall, the grounding cable of the equipment is connected to the integrated grounding bar. The grounding resistance (R) of the grounding bar should be less than 5 and the grounding junction pieces should be protected from corrosion.

4.7.2 Power supply connection


For the Repeater not requiring standby power supply, the 220V/50Hz AC power can be led in directly from the power outlet. The power inlead should be 2mm conductor shorter than 30 m.

If standby power supply is required, the power must first be led into the UPS and then led from the UPS to the power outlet of the Repeater. Note that, according to the design, the UPS is usually a commercial product and must be put indoors.

Note: To ensure personal safety, make sure to disconnect the external contactor before connecting 220VAC power supply to the equipment and take care never to work in rainstorms.

5. Integrated Monitoring System


Integrated Monitoring System V5.1.0 is available to support both SQL Server and ACCESS databases and compatible with multiple protocols simultaneously; therefore, related configuration shall be done prior to application.

Click the install, the monitor software can be installed successfully.

5.2 Configure the Software


The following steps are the process of connecting the PC to the repeater on the site. And the connecting cable is RS232.

5.2.1 Configure the communication server


Running the communication server first, click the icon of the communication server with the right button of the mouse and then choose configure to get access into the CommServer Configuration.

Then you will see the interface below:

Please choose COM LINK and COM1, and then click OK.

When choose the COM LINK to connect the repeater with the computer locally. We need the RS232 to connect the repeater with the computer.

The pin 2 and pin 3 of the two tie-ins are crossed to connected, and two pins 5 of the two tie-ins are connected directly, and the pins left dont connected.

NoteThe dual frequency combiner repeater can set kinds of RF parameter in 900M and 1800M respectively. In the same monitoring parameter, for instance, Up-link Gain 1 is the parameter of 900MHz and Up-link Gain 2 indicates the one of 1800MHz.

2. Change the repeater No. (The previous Device No.) Choose the repeater you want to change and click the right button of the mouse to choose the option: Modify Repeaters No. and input the New Repeater No. clients want to change, for example as the followed illustration: 00000001.

Then click Set to confirm the New Repeater No. clients want.

5.4Monitor Interface illustration

illustrations are some important interfaces that have strong relevance with the coverage quality in the site opening. The settings of these interfaces are the manufacture initial setting, and on the site it may need some change of these setting. It is suggested to click read firstly to query parameter and then set what is necessary parameter carefully.

Configuration is useful to configure slave unit. It is not necessary to configure for without slave unit in here. Please click Set first then carries on the following steps.

Set downlink and uplink limit are shown as below. Take alarm in case detected parameter exceeds the range of limit. Customer could set power limit according to requirement to ensure alarm information.

5.6 Principle Settings


5.6.1 ATT Setting
Before setting ATT (attenuation), please click the button Read first. Then you will know the information before you set the ATT. It is necessary to only set relative Value for attenuation. ATT1 is as for uplink and downlink ATT in 900MHz and ATT2 means uplink and downlink ATT in 1800MHz.

Our manufacture setting of the RF signal is on status. If on the site, the output power tested is very weak, please check the PA on-off interface. Read first, if the PA is off, please change into on and click set.

5.6.3 Frequency Configuration

Such Windows is applicable to set frequency selection. Set Work PLL as 4 and put GSM900M/DCS1800M (880-960/1710-1880M) in Freq section.

Set uplink and downlink limit of 900MHz in Work High Edge1 and Work low Edge1 respectively.

Set uplink and downlink limit of 1800MHz in Work High Edge2 and Work low Edge2 respectively.

In GZF900/1800-V, the maximum channel number of 900MHz should be set as 62 and the minimum one is 24. The relative downlink is 939.9947.5MHz and uplink is 894.9902.5MHz;

The maximum channel number of 1800MHz should be set as 585 and the minimum one is 555. The relative downlink is 1813.91819.9MHz and uplink is 1718.9 1724.9MHz. Customer could adjust the frequency range according to requirement.

Appendix A: Test on Availability of SIM Card Data Service

For dialing with Modem, SIM card must be provided with data service, which shall be set by Operator on exchange end.

Hyper-terminal is a self-contained tool of operating system, which is installed upon setup of Windows2000/XP. If uninstalled you may set up via Add/delete program on control panel: select WINDOWS Groupware, click Accessory and Tool on Guide Menu of Windows Accessory and Tool, press Details, select Communication in popup Menu, click Details, select hyper-terminal in Communication menu, and then click OK to WINDOWS setup hyper-terminal.

Setup hyper-terminal in Windows98/ME is similar to what is mentioned above.

You are allowed to inspect whether data service is available for GSM SIM card or not via hyper-terminal, connect serial port wire of GSM wireless Modem or wired Modem to computer, select serial port, and then set serial port as follows: Baud Rate: 9600; Data Bit: 8; Odd/Even Check: None; Stop Bit: 1; Flow Control: None On Setting of hyper-terminal attribute, entering Set ASCII to single out all Check Boxes.

Suppose number of phone that Repeater GSM SIM card is inserted is 13871257852, it is required to check whether such number is available for data service.

Step 1: AT Enter, Back: OK, indicating MODEM is well prepared. In case of no Back or Back ERROR, it is necessary to check GSM MODEM status and setting of

hyper-terminal. Step 2: ATDT 13871257852 Enter, Back to CONNECT 9600, indicating data service is available. In case of no Back to CONNECT 9600, it is proposed to repeat Step 2 for several times, if remaining no Back each time, then it will indicate something wrong with such Card in data service.

Note: Prior to test it is required to make sure the SIM card in Modem of hyper-terminal is available for data transmission function.
