SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES
Read the different greetings, farewell or courtesy expressions from the Big Book or other resources, and have Ss act them out. Sing a song about greetings and farewell expressions. Ss form two groups: one group sings the first part of the song, and the second group sings the second part of it until the end (or by paragraphs). Chain greeting: give a ball to a student next to you, tell him/her your name, and ask the student his/her name: Good morning, My name is______. What is your name? Have Ss pass the ball to the next student. Divide the class into pairs. Ask them to have a puppet and act out and repeat the next words: Hi!, Hello!, Good morning, Good afternoon, Good evening, Good night, Bye, See you, Have a nice day, Whats up?, Whats new?, So long, Please, Thanks. Teacher pastes courtesy phrases around the classroom; then, Ss paste the signs they already made to match them with those phrases. Teacher takes Ss to a sand box to have them trace the courtesy words several times imitating her (use resources as available, such as clay or modeling dough). Divide the classroom in teams. Give a phrase to each team in which theres a letter that needs to be traced and colored. Make sure Ss identify it and complete it. Place courtesy words and phrases mixed on the board. Have Ss categorize them into greetings, farewell and courtesy expressions. Have Ss trace the whole phrases following directionality. Repeat the phrase orally several times. Have Ss get in teams. Make them collect the drawings and words done in previous classes. Have Ss in teams choose the expressions they want to include on their poster. They can include 2 or 3 words. After that have Ss read aloud their words, and paste them on the poster. Invite Ss to take a crayon and work together drawing greeting and farewell signs. Walk around monitoring the task. Provide illustrations for Ss to color Finally, have Ss choose a place to put their work on. It can be inside or outside the classroom, and have them present it to one another and then to other groups.
